23.01.2022 JUST START IT 01 August, all five Year 10 EMITS teams participated in the Just Start IT Finals at Newman Siena Centre. Here, they pitched their technology based business plans in front of a large panel of industry representatives. This is the first time all teams have made it into the top 10, and this is a huge accomplishment for all students involved, and for Mr Skufca our Digital Technologies teacher. Huge congratulations go to Food Unity (Falih Al-Dulimi, Georgie Gwinnutt..., Amberly Lynch, Axel Mulot, Amos Ndakirutimana and Grace Taylor) for winning Just Start IT for 2020. They win a trophy for the school, and a $5000 cash prize for themselves. Best of luck to the team as they work towards making their app a reality. 19.01.2022 Year 11 student Jessica B will shortly become a published poet. She has had one of her poems accepted into the Primo Lux anthology. This is a select annual anthology of poetry composed by the top Yr 10 - 12 students from across WA.
19.01.2022 This week the Year 12 Hockey Academy students were treated with a visit from the Hockey WA Coach Development and State Participation Coordinator Marc Pike. This was the first in a series of lessons he is running with the students as part of their Hockey Australia Level 1 Coaching Qualification which the students have been working towards this year. Everyone had a fantastic time and found Marcs insight and advice extremely helpful. We cant wait for what he has in store next week! Thanks to Marc and Hockey WA for their support of the Como Hockey Academy.

17.01.2022 GET EXCITED! Only one week until our VERY FIRST Create at Como Production of Romeo and Juliet with our talented Year 7 students on Friday 11th. You can book your tickets at https://www.trybooking.com/BMQJX for only 5$. Gates (entry via the Gym/Library gates) will open at 6 for a BYO picnic under the stars in the Year 9 Quad (seating and tables will be available). There is no allocated seating, so come early to nab your preferred spot. The performance will begin at 7.30pm and is expected to run for approximately 65-70 minutes. I am beyond excited for the Year 7s - here is a snippet of our rehearsals that have been running every Sunday since the start of term. For this, the inaugural year of Create, I am extremely proud of the students, and well... YOU for supporting this NEW endeavour at Como!

14.01.2022 The Year 12 Dinner was a wonderful opportunity to acknowledge the support and encouragement given by parents and carers during the students time at Como. It was a fantastic evening and great to see so many attend.
13.01.2022 It was serious business in the gym as they marked the end of the 2020 Como Hockey Academy Indoor Tournament which has been played over the last 8 weeks. The Grand Final was between Team 2 of Flame and Team 8 from Pine House. Well done to Team 8 from Pine who put on an indoor clinic running out 13-4 winners in the end. Congratulations to Aoife Yr8, Emily Yr9, Shaun Yr10, Isabella Yr 10 and Saysha Yr11 on a superb tournament. And thanks to Mr McKnight for organising.

13.01.2022 Year 12 Visual Arts student, Amelie Mias, The Lester Prize Youth Awards last week, with her painting Caitlin. Amelie was selected as an awards finalist. Her painting will be on exhibit at Brookfield Place Tower 2 Lobby, 125 St George’s Terrace, Perth, until 27th November. The calibre of entries was exceptionally high this year and well worth a visit. 13.01.2022 Throughout the year, ‘Food Unity’, from Yr 10 EMITS Digital Technologies, have been competing in various competitions, pitching their tech startup against other teams in the state. Their hard work paid off as they were chosen to represent Western Australia in The iAwards competition. Due to restrictions, on Tuesday the 17th of November, the 2020 national iAwards presentation event was run through live video feeds. Unfortunately, the team did not win the top prize, but just making it to this stage is a massive accomplishment. Food Unity are currently pursuing the development of their application and plan to have it released to the public in the near future
12.01.2022 YEAR 9 ENGLISH Over the past few weeks Year 9s in English have been writing, designing and creating their own picture books on a range of issues! Students have learned that visual communication can be highly symbolic and powerful, and they have tackled sensitive topics with maturity, care and imagination. 11.01.2022 JUST START IT COMPETITON Students from Mr Skufcas Year 10 EMITS Digital Technologies class pitched their tech business startups in the annual Just Start IT competition. Each group presented an excellent pitch, and for the first time ever all 5 groups made it into the top 10 in the state. Each group will pitch in the Finals this Saturday, and the winning team will take home $5,000. We wish them all the best of luck this weekend!

09.01.2022 The Year 12 Outdoor Education students have been braving the cold winter mornings to get out on the Swan River for their practical canoeing lessons. Students have been learning canoeing skills and practicing capsizing and rescues in preparation for their upcoming camp in Dwellingup next week.

06.01.2022 Today Como held its Mentally Healthy Expo. All students were given time out of class to explore the activities and information available. It was great to see the students engage with the different community agencies, learn good mental health strategies, and what to do if they need support. Huge thanks to all involved. The Mentally Healthy Schools Program encourages young people to talk about mental health, reduces stigma around mental illness and increases staff and student participation in mentally healthy activities. 03.01.2022 Year 12s have been working hard with their woodwork projects near completion. Sean (Adirondack Chair) will be completing the final sanding before applying an exterior decking/furniture oil to darken and protect timber. Cumeni (Garden bench seat) will complete the final sanding and filling before applying an exterior decking/furniture oil to darken and protect timber. Temurbek (Low family table) will complete the final sanding before spraying with varnish, the purple pattern in the middle of the table is done with Epoxy resin which will really stand out and catch the eye when the varnish is applied. 02.01.2022 Craig Davies, who graduated from Como in 1974 was recently inducted into the Hockey Australia Hall of Fame! Craig's legacy sits prominently inside the Como gymnasium, providing inspiration to our current Hockey Academy students. Craig's list of achievements include: 193 caps for the Kookaburras; Captain of the Kookaburras from 1987-1990; a member of the 1986 World Cup Winning team; selected for 3 x Olympic Games; numerous Champions Trophy Medals; being named WAIS Athlete of... the Year 1989; inducted into the WAIS Hall of Fame; and winning a Hockey WA Olympians Medal in 1983.
