02.01.2022 Tick season is back in full swing so for those of you needing a refresher course in the signs of tick paralysis then continue reading. Paralysis ticks are common throughout the year in Queensland but are especially prevalent from September to February, particularly after warm weather and when humid. It is a common myth that our dogs and cats develop immunity to the tick neurotoxins injected. Do you know the signs and symptoms of tick paralysis? Lethargy Inappetance... Vomiting/gagging/retching Change of voice Grunting breathing, increase in rate and effort Slow blink in eyes Weakness in back legs, progressing to paralysis Difficulty/inability to urinate Anxiety Salivating If you notice any of these signs you should immediately contact your vet and begin searching for ticks (they can be notoriously difficult to find and fast removal is essential). Do not offer food or water to your pet. Even after ticks are removed from pets with no symptoms they can deteriorate within 24-48hrs If you are unfortunate and your pet does fall victim to tick paralysis then treatment is available and should be initiated immediately. Preventative treatments for ticks are always cheaper than treatment for tick paralysis, but remember you should NEVER use dog products on cats as they can be toxic. Come in and see us at Companion Vet Care so we can advise on the most appropriate treatment for your pet’s individual needs. We have all kinds of tablets, chewables, spot-ons, and sprays, to make administration as easy as you need it to be and you’ll be pleasantly surprised by how price competitive we are! See more
