24.01.2022 Many of us have been to The Gabba to watch an AFL or cricket match over the years. But for former Queensland AFL player Ross Whyte, today marked a return to his... field of dreams. Ross had his last sporting wish fulfiled today when he made one final visit to the hallowed turf at The Gabba the scene of his 1977 grand final heroics where he kicked the winning goal. Ross was surrounded by family, friends, Health Minister Yvette D'Ath, Chief Health Officer Dr Jeanette Young and Brisbane Lions players Oscar McInerney and Ryan Lester and Palliative Care Queensland CEO Shyla Mills. 24.01.2022 Dr. Miriam-Rose Ungunmerr-Baumann is an Indigenous elder, artist and educator and is named the 2021 Senior Australian of the Year. Apart from her artwork, and w...ork in education, she is perhaps best known for her reflections on dadirri inner, deep listening and quiet, still awareness. Dadirri, she says, is perhaps the greatest gift [Aboriginal Australians] can give to our fellow Australians... dadirri recognises the deep spring that is inside us. This is from an older presentation she gave: "What I want to talk about is another special quality of my people. I believe it is the most important. It is our most unique gift. It is perhaps the greatest gift we can give to our fellow Australians. In our language this quality is called dadirri. It is inner, deep listening and quiet, still awareness. Dadirri recognises the deep spring that is inside us. We call on it and it calls to us. This is the gift that Australia is thirsting for. It is something like what you call "contemplation". When I experience dadirri, I am made whole again. I can sit on the riverbank or walk through the trees; even if someone close to me has passed away, I can find my peace in this silent awareness. There is no need of words. A big part of dadirri is listening. Through the years, we have listened to our stories. They are told and sung, over and over, as the seasons go by. Today we still gather around the campfires and together we hear the sacred stories. As we grow older, we ourselves become the storytellers. We pass on to the young ones all they must know. The stories and songs sink quietly into our minds and we hold them deep inside. In the ceremonies we celebrate the awareness of our lives as sacred. The contemplative way of dadirri spreads over our whole life. It renews us and brings us peace. It makes us feel whole again " Dr. Miriam-Rose Ungunmerr-Baumann Text from article: https://www.miriamrosefoundation.org.au/about-dadirri Video from 2017 about Dadirri and the River People : https://youtu.be/tow2tR_ezL8 http://thedadirrifilm.com/the-film Art: Miriam-Rose Umgunmerr-Baumann https://www.facebook.com/miriamrosefoundation/

22.01.2022 I'm staying at my brother Kym's place in Springwood for a couple of days and went for a 10km walk this morning around the Daisy Hill Conservation Park. It became like a 'Bryan Gilmour - lap of honour' as I rounded John Paul College, Logan UCA, Calvary College, Springwood BlueCare, Yurana Village etc. Amongst the less-tangible investment Bryan has made in many peoples lives, it is very special to also have these tangible legacies which honour some of his amazing life-work. Well done Bryan, congratulations again on your Order of Australia medal. With respect, appreciation and blessings.

14.01.2022 St Francis Prayer Lord, make me a channel of your peace. That where there is hatred, I may bring love. That where there is wrong, I may bring the spirit of for...giveness, That where there is discord, I may bring harmony, That where there is error, I may bring truth, That where there is doubt, I may bring faith, That where there is despair, I may bring hope, That where there are shadows, I may bring light, That where there is sadness, I may bring joy. Lord, grant that I may seek rather to comfort, than to be comforted, To understand than to be understood, To love that to be loved. For it is by forgetting self that one finds. It is by forgiving that one is forgiven, And it is by dying that one awakens to eternal life. *This is the version of the St Francis Prayer that St Teressa of Calcutta prayed.

11.01.2022 Wonderful news! Congratulations Bryan! So well deserved after a lifetime of caring for others and showing compassionate leadership!

10.01.2022 Our first speaker at the Palliative Care in Queensland Summit Sector Update is Claire Scoles who spoke about her role as a carer and wife during her husband Chr...is’ care. In Claire’s words, two elements stand out that could change care, especially around how we talk about care and end of life. No one ever openly discussed with us how, and when the time came, Chris would like to die. Why aren’t we doing that? Why aren’t we having those discussions? It makes it very difficult to discuss death and end of life care in a positive way, when in reality there are so many benefits, and lives can be so enriched, simply by addressing and having the correct tone for end of life care. I think this needs to start with these primary caregivers, and our doctors and nurses and allied health professionals. You can read more about Claire’s Story and why Palliative Care is a critical support to families at: https://palliativecareqld.org.au/claires-story-giving-the-/ #PalliativeCare #PalliativeCareQueensland #PCiQSummit

09.01.2022 Chaplaincy in Australia's prisons has been a challenge to conduct during the COVID-19 pandemic with social distancing restrictions and fears of an outbreak among inmates.

09.01.2022 We are living in an increasingly polarized world...a place where, more and more, people have lost the ability to see one another's point of view. I hope that th...is election, New Zealand has shown that this is not who we are. That, as a nation, we can listen and we can debate. After all, we are too small to lose sight of other people's perspective. ~Jacinda Ardern See more

04.01.2022 It is so easy for us to get stuck in the weeds and the muck, just like throwing a ball in the air that always comes down. It seems almost normal. Complacency ...kills thriving, so beware. Be aware and be mindful. Don’t allow yourself to wallow in self-pity. Don’t allow yourself to wallow in guilt and self-doubt. Be brave. Be courageous and stand up to negative judgment. Turn off the spotlight on negative judgment. We are better than that. Make the effort to remind yourself of that fact. Please don’t be complacent and think you can’t do it. You can! Sky is the limit! Emaho! See more

03.01.2022 A passion for fast cars, riffing on a guitar and morning teas that involve ‘anything bad for you’ are not the first things you may associate with a long time me...mber of the Catholic Clergy, but for Father Ron Mollison his love of life is matched by his devotion to his calling. Today, Ambulance Wish Queensland were delighted to be able to create forever memories for Fr Ron, his niece Louise, and a cohort of friends who gathered at Ron’s home for a celebratory morning tea in a place that created so much joy for so many years. 02.01.2022 Happy Spiritual Care Week! Spiritual care is an essential domain of palliative care, which focuses on the holistic spiritual needs of the whole person and their... family. Spirituality encompasses the individual’s search for meaning and purpose in life and the experience of the transcendent. For some people spirituality can be largely faith-based, for others it may be their relationship with nature or the profound connections they have with other people. In this special week, we are delighted to launch a new initiative and support for our sector. We are also excited to announce a formal partnership with Meaningful Ageing Australia and Spiritual Health Association which endeavours to create a state-wide map of spiritual care in palliative care. A report will be launched in the first half of 2021. Watch this space! Learn more about PCQ’s Spiritual Care at https://palliativecareqld.org.au/spiritualcare

01.01.2022 This is a delightful story about Jane McNamara’s extra-ordinary, compassionate work in the Robina Palliative Care Unit, as part of a multi-disciplinary team. I’ve had the privilege of serving there in previous years, with other members of our Spiritual Care Services continuing this compassionate, holistic care.
