23.01.2022 THRIVING AFTER AN ACCIDENT Five years after enduring full-body burns, brave 10-year-old Rihanata is thriving with hope and confidence thanks to the support and encouragement of her child development centre. I am doing very well. I feel no major pain due to the burns. The teachers at the centre are very kind to me, they treat my wounds when I hurt myself, says Rihanata.... Five years ago, Rihanata suffered horrific burns to 80 per cent of her body. The little girl was playing outside when she fell onto the cooking stove and a pot of boiling sauce spilled onto her face and body. Compassion staff from her local centre are so impressed with her constant joy. Rihanata’s enthusiasm and energy are contagious. With schools to reopen again soon after being forced to close due to the pandemic, Rihanata is excited to return to the classroom. I am glad I received a new school backpack full of books, crayons, and pens that the centre director gave me the other day," she says. After all she has been through, Rihanata is hopeful and confident that her dreams will come true thanks to the support of the centre and her generous sponsor, Renate. When I grow up, I want to be a medical doctor to help children who are sick and wounded." 05.01.2022 On November 1, 2020, the strongest storm of the year pummelled the Philippines. The Joint Typhoon Warning Centre reported that Super Typhoon Goni made landfall with maximum sustained winds of 310 kilometres (195 miles) per hour near its centre. Many people are missing. Homes are destroyed. Entire towns have been submerged by floodwaters. Compassion Philippines has requested emergency funding to help meet the most urgent needs. More than 22 church partners and thousands of ch...ildren are affected. The impact from our Churches on the ground responding to this crisis is immediate. They have been doing the following in light of COVID-19. 1. Mapping out which families are in evacuation centres. 2. Providing relief goods: food, vitamins, and hygiene kit especially masks and hand sanitiser. 3. Providing safe and clean water. 4. Providing mosquito nets and repellents. 5. Maintaining physical distancing as much as possible. 6. Immediately reporting to local authorities if anyone is not feeling well. What can we do? 1. Pray with us in the comments below. 2. Contribute to our Typhoon Goni Appeal linked in the bio above. 3. Continue to support our Churches in the Philippines through sponsorship, letter writing and advocacy. https://www.compassion.com.au/donate/disaster-relief

01.01.2022 MEET DOEGREEGOR AND SUCHAT FROM THAILAND. It’s a parent’s dream to provide for their child; to raise them healthy and happy with all the opportunities in the world ahead of them. For Doe-greegor, this dream was impeded by the devastating impact of poverty. Doe-greegor is a migrant worker and the mother of 10-year-old Suchat, who is registered with Compassion’s program in Thailand. ... A year ago, their family received assistance from Compassion to start a pig farm from two piglets. But this glimmer of hope was short-lived when Suchat’s brother passed away from diabetes. "When we found Suchat’s brother had diabetes, we sold everything we had. It felt impossible for us to start all over again after his passing," says Doe-greegor. "I remember thinking about taking out a loan to start the pig farm again, but I knew I would not be able to pay it back on time." Compassion’s local church partner intervened, offering the family support through Huey Nam Khun Child Development Centre in Thailand. The family was finally able to start again and purchased two piglets for their pig farm. As a result of COVID-19 impacting the community, Doe-greegor had to sell one of her pigs to feed the other. But thankfully, her piglets multiplied to seven in total a very welcomed blessing! She has since sold five and kept two. You can walk this journey alongside a family like Suchat’s.
