24.01.2022 Should you take breaks from coffee to increase how well it works?

24.01.2022 Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport - FAQs!

19.01.2022 Alright, real talk - stop spending dayyyyssss flattening your coke ready for race day! I know, I know, a Dietitian talking @cocacola - but it has to be the original sports drink! Annddddd one of those things that the athletes knew about way before us specialists. It was actually one of the starters in our discoveries of caffeine for sports performance!... So, if you are about to endeavour on some ultra racing as it kicks back up - and there are a lot of you coming through our doors at the moment - then this is how you can speed up the ‘defizzing’ of that magic brown liquid to help get you home! Who swears by coke at the end of a session or race? Tag your training buddies to save them the pain of any unexpected explosions or time wasted! P.S sorry for sending you to Insta - it wouldn’t let me save the video #trailrunner #running #ultrarunner #cyclist #roadcyclist #offroad #ultraracing #ultrarace #racing #athlete #triathlete #ultrarunning #ultra #triathlon #ironman #ironmantraining #ironmantriathlon https://www.instagram.com/reel/CG6ccOuHzyU/

17.01.2022 Hands up for our endurance followers! Here is a snappy little breakdown of rough carb goals per hour for your training and racing. There are soooo many possibilities and so many different combos, but hoping these few examples get you a start.... Don’t panic if you aren’t getting these recommendations in, it is normal to fuel each session differently, to build up amounts per hour as you approach your key races, and of course everyone is different! These strategies, including ‘training the gut’ is called nutrition periodisation and is our absolute fav thing to help our clients master! If you have experienced hitting the wall/bonking, gut upset or holding intensity during training and racing - there is a solution! Another thing often overlooked are the logistical and tolerance differences between sports eg. Cycle vs running, and I am positive fat adaptation will come up - so we will leave these for a reel for another day! #endurance #athlete #enduranceathlete #performance #enduranceathlete #sport #sportsnutrition #sportsdietitian #dietitian #performancedietitian #nutrition #food #runner #trailrunner #marathon #cyclist #cycling #roadcyclist #procyclist

17.01.2022 If you feel like the people rating foods with health stars are a little drunk, you are not alone - it took me longer than I care to admit to work them out too Hamish & Andy made a very good point this week on the podcast - it’s a mess! So how are we MEANT to use them?... They aren’t actually designed to compare all foods with each other - ie. a high star rating doesn’t mean they are a great option - it just means it is the better option in that group of foods I.e. chips getting 4.5 stars doesn’t mean they are. A superfood, it just means that that brand/option of chips is a good one. 4.5 stars on blueberries doesn’t mean they are the same level of ‘health’ as chips. The stars aren’t designed to rate all foods against each other. There are many other issues and loopholes with the health star ratings that are gradually being resolved, but for now they continue to look at foods without context. They rate the health of a frozen blueberry based upon its nutrition panel numbers - rather than actually considering it as a food in the context of it being a food with one ingredients for minimal processing. So, how can you use the stars? If you are struggling to choose the better option of muesli bar, the stars might help guide you. However, even then, you may still want to check the back of the pack to make sure you are happy with the ingredients list So tell me, who’s mind is blown? Cheers to Hamish & Andy for the inspo and sweet vocals! #healthrating #health #hamishandandy #podcast #nutrition #food #foodstar #family #familyfood #fitness

16.01.2022 On International Day of People with Disability, we have so much to celebrate and so many crew members to shine in the spotlight - not just today, but always. This legend is Aimee. We had so much fun filming her story this year with FortemMedia and it feels like the perfect opportunity to share a snippet with you. Only just out of school, it is difficult to believe the maturity, class and professionalism Aimee brings to every interaction and training session.... Bring on the brightest of careers in track racing for this superstar Alongside Aimee, we also have the pleasure of working alongside Jonathan Goerlach, @etapp1 & Lauren Parker in all things Paratri. Each with a unique story and all with challenges that are overcome with grace daily. It is an honour to also be starting with the @footballaus Pararoos in the coming month also, so we are pretty amped to be a part of that journey in the years to come! It would be remiss of us not to take this opportunity to also shine a spotlight onto the one and only Kurt Fearnley. A non-exec director with Compeat, he is the definition of inspiration, intent and drive. I am positive that with anything he is told he can’t do, he will absolutely do - Paralympics and Marathons to completing Kokoda and winning the Sydney to Hobart. So not just today, but in all our daily adventures, let’s take the time to take notice and listen to stories - as this is how we can build empathy in circumstances many of us will not experience. To start, catch some of our fav podcast episodes by search ‘Compeat waffle’ plus ‘Jess smith’ or ‘Sam Bloom’ - honestly breathtaking. I can’t finish this post without also a massive shoutout to Dylan Alcott - the recent release of Able Foods is incredible and literally changing lives - thank you! Let’s build toward an inclusive society that celebrates diversity and all achievement - because there is so much ability beyond disability. #parathlete #paralympics #disability #idpwd #ability #athlete #performance #acceptance #sport #nutrition #performancenutrition #performancedietitian #sportsdietitian #olympics

10.01.2022 The one thing I hope to achieve with this latest podcast, is to provide the information and empowerment that I wish I had when I was returning to movement post-birth. The information that normal and common are completely different things and that support to recovery wasn’t anywhere near as overwhelming as I had built it up to be in my mind. Yes, this is a very female specific episode, but if you work alongside or train females..please take a listen!... To share the voice of empathy and wisdom that is Beck from Women's Health Physiotherapy is an honour (and yeah, I am pretty nervous about sharing some of my story.) Her support and offering of hope throughout rehab has literally been life changing and it highlights the importance of finding a practitioner that gets it. That is willing to listen to what recovery is defined as for you and what movement truly means to you and your identity. As a mum and athlete herself (she will hate me calling her that, but ah well ), she is a Physio specialising in women’s health. Whether you are currently pregnant, already have kiddies or know kids are on the plan somewhere for your future self, please please please take a listen to this ep or save it for later! No topics are off limits in this one and I made sure to ask allll the questions you sent through! What was your recovery back to movement and training like post bub? Feel free to tag any of your pregnant or new mumma friends! 09.01.2022 An article published this week by the team at Australian Institute of Sport and University of Canberra looked at how common symptoms associated with Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport are in elite female athletes. There are so many intricacies in RED-S - a syndrome that occurs when there is a mismatch between energy intake and the energy cost of exercise. Although all of these symptoms help to monitor for RED-S, it is difficult to diagnose.... However, with the symptoms of mental illness, gut upset, poor immune function and impacted menstrual function all so prevalent in this cohort (80% had at least one symptom), the need for awareness, monitoring and support in athletes is absolutely needed. If you have any of these symptoms, please know they are common - but not normal. Reversing REDS through achieving improved energy availability will not only help with your performance and training adaptations now, but protect your fertility and bone health well into your future #reds #energydeficiency #female #women #womenssports #sport #athlete #femaleathlete #active #fitness #nutrition #sportsnutrition #dietitian #sportsdietitian #nutritionist #performancedietitian #performancenutrition #triathlete #runner #cyclis

09.01.2022 How many Christmas Parties have you got approaching? Christmas is going to be a little different this year, but no matter where you are in the world, how do we best eat during the festive season?

07.01.2022 What an absolute highlight of a day! We got to spend the day chatting with over 800 kids from rural and remote Australia in celebration of John Moriarty Football Indigenous Football Week alongside National NAIDOC The goal of each session we presented was to spark curiosity - the feeing so integral to learning and progress, but so often overlooked. Each location (and each student within each location) experiences such a varying level of food availability and food security... and cooking skills - with one location currently even without a supermarket after it burned down. With this in mind, we were so determined to bring a food discussion that removed the morality around food and the privilege so often within food education. Instead, we loved facilitating food exploration and excitement. We did a lot of questioning and listening before these sessions to aim for an empathetic and engagingly relevant session. But even with this, I already know we made some mistakes and have lots to improve on - but improvement and progress for inclusion takes some vulnerability , and for that, our small discomfort was totally worth it. We had kids pumped about sharing which foods they love and which ones they are learning to love; we had kids working through how to build super powerful small habits in their days; and we had the sweetest of interactive competitions to finish it off. Presenting virtually is tough, but it has also opened an opportunity to reach numbers and community that we may not have otherwise - and for that, we are heading to bed happy and grateful tonight to be living our values in what we have built within Compeat None of this would have been possible without the @footballjmf facilitators and school teachers - thank you!! #alwayswasalwayswillbe #naidoc2020 #naidoc #naidocweek2020 #indigenousfootball #indigenousfood #aboriginal #aboriginalaustralia #football #footballaustralia #professionalfootball #athlete #soccer #performancenutrition #sportsnutrition #sportsdietitian #dietitian #food #health

04.01.2022 I could watch time-lapse of seedlings growing on the daily, but I promise that isn’t the point to this post Watch this video another time through - this time not focusing on the greenery, but instead the time taken in setting the foundations - the roots to growth that go unseen. Look at the effort and detail that goes in before that little seedling is even visible above the soil.... Whether it is in business, career, competition or relationships - that time and effort that goes into setting the foundation of trust and stability to allow the growth to eventually be visible. I had such an epic conversation with a client today about vulnerability. Change and growth is hard - popping up above that surface feels like it can take forever and also can feel so risky of failure. Am I worthy? What if they are right? What if I can’t do this? What if something happens? Doing the ugly training sessions, working into the wee hours or eating the uninstagrammable (but still delicious) meals are the things that go unseen and uncelebrated - but over time, these are the actions that build to the most magical progress toward your growth Gorgeous video from @goodful

03.01.2022 There are some things that come up in conversations with clients that floor me. One of these is hearing the little comments and pieces of advice people receive - the things that stick with them and the things we work through, a lot. Here are just a few examples from this month. No positive motivation comes from a place of guilt or shame. Not thinking that something should be hard or a problem because it isn’t hard or a problem for you, is absolutely something to work through.... If you are someone who has had thoughts like these or made these kind of comments previously, this isn’t a message to make you feel bad - it is an opportunity to simply invite you to consider another perspective. Another filter to see through. Empathy doesn’t have to only come from personally living through situations, it can also be something built over time through listening. If you find it difficult to understand how someone can be overweight, start listening and inviting them to tell their story or listen to podcasts that tell these stories - because I can assure you it is highly unlikely to be ‘laziness’. If you find it difficult to comprehend how someone can not simply eat or eat enough, instead of oversimplified advice or sympathy, start showing an interest in them and a willingness to listen. Because I promise you they also wish it was as simple as the logical solution. If you find yourself getting frustrated at an athlete or friend that keeps missing sessions or being late to sessions, don’t shame them but rather invite them to share why they are missing the session or finding it hard to make it on time. There might be a lot more to it than motivation or being ‘hopeless’. This all comes with a warning though, listening and inviting yourself to build empathy will feel freaking vulnerable. You are guaranteed to make mistakes or say the wrong thing. If you are worried about that, say that out loud - tell them this feels scary to you, invite them to correct you and show them your openness to learning. Have you experienced comments like these or working on challenging thoughts like this?
