25.01.2022 Happy crew today with everyone returning home with quality King George whiting fillets for dinner. Bailey was pretty excited to catch two at a time.

24.01.2022 Went out late yesterday afternoon looking for seaweed worms with no luck so I thought I’d flick a soft plastic around for yellowfin. No luck but I got these two beauties as my by catch. Went back again today better prepared with back up plan if they weren’t about. Glad I did.

24.01.2022 Happy crew today rebooking straight away for another trip to Point Turton and on our fishing charter in early January - today they bagged their boat limit of whiting and 30 squid with plenty of laughs and banter.

24.01.2022 Busy afternoon session with our crew, finding the snook and trevally co-operating on the incoming tide.

13.01.2022 CEO'S MESSAGE I have provided information on the damage to the Port Hughes Jetty and the repairs to be undertaken on previous Facebook posts on the 24th August,... 11th September and 30th September. The timeline for the repairs to be undertaken are:- Damage was reported to Council Saturday 22nd August following bad weather from the 19th to 22nd August. Council staff that were on call assessed the damage and closed the Jetty for public safety reasons. Council staff further inspected the damage sustained on Monday 24th August. Council’s Insurer was notified on the 28th August. Inspection of the damage sustained and production of a report is a specialised assessment unlike contacting an Electrician or a Plumber for works to be undertaken. The State Government Department Infrastructure and Transport was contacted to make sure that the businesses engaged to inspect the damage and produce a report were accredited. This was so that Council's costs above $10,000 would be met by the State Government. Whyalla Diving were available and undertook inspections of the damage on 18-19th September and WGA Structural Engineers on the 18th September. Reports were produced on the damage sustained by Whyalla Diving on the 27th September and WGA on the 25th September, with their official report received on the 9th October. Council then prepared a document based on the reports for a Request For Quotation from suitably qualified businesses for repair works. This was requested on the 16th October and closed on the 30th October. The quotations received were sent to the State Government on the 4th November and Council Insurer on the 3rd November. The quotations received were assessed and a suitably qualified business has been appointed for the work to commence on the 10th December. Repair works are expected to be completed prior to Christmas and following an inspection that it is safe to do so, the Jetty would be reopened to the prior to Christmas. Further information will continue to be provided. Russell Peate Chief Executive Officer

09.01.2022 Fishing fines increase for first time in 30 years Fines for a range of fishing offences are being increased for the first time in thirty years, as the Marshall ...Liberal Government responds to industry calls for heavier penalties for rogue fishers who break the law. The decision to change the expiation fees is in response to calls from the recreational sector and followed a review conducted in 2019. The new penalties will apply from March 2021. The review of fines found many fishing offences and penalties have been unchanged since 1989 when the power to issue expiation notices was introduced. Minister for Primary Industries and Regional Development David Basham said the recreational fishing sector has consistently said current fines are too low and not an effective deterrent. This has been reiterated by the Minister’s Recreational Fishing Advisory Council. Some fishing fines haven’t increased for almost 30 years and are no longer deterring people who want to break the rules, Minister Basham said. The black-market value of seafood has increased well beyond the penalties set back in the 1980s. For example, under the old rules, someone caught taking 20 undersize crabs could only be issued a $100 fine. Offenders found it cheaper to break the law than pay up to $150 for the crabs at the shops. Both recreational fishers and the commercial sector have been disgusted at these low fines, and both have called for significantly larger fines to deter wrong-doers. Using the blue crab example, under the new penalties announced today, an offender caught with more than 20 undersized crabs is going to be fined $625. The Marshall Liberal Government takes our seafood sustainability seriously, and those who think the rules don’t apply to them have a rude shock coming their way. Remember, if you see someone breaking the fishing rules, report the activity to the 24-hour FISHWATCH on 1800 065 522, or on the SA Fishing App. There are 128 individual offences with increased penalties for recreational and commercial fishers (including boat, bag, size and gear restrictions). 06.01.2022 PORT HUGHES JETTY REPAIRS Council has received a report from structural engineers and diving experts regarding the Port Hughes Jetty following storm damage. C...osts for repairs are now being obtained based on this report and will be available soon. Once costs are received, Council will engage an accredited contractor with the State Government to undertake works. Council has a lease with the State Government, where Council must meet the first $10,000 of repair costs. If an insurance claim can be lodged for the costs up to $10,000, Council will only pay the insurance excess applicable. Funds have been budgeted to enable further preventative maintenance to be undertaken this financial year. Further information will be provided when it is available.
