25.01.2022 Womens Health Week As Womens Health Week comes to and end, we would like to reiterate the importance of your health as a Woman. Despite the benefits of exercise, Australian women arent moving enough. Less than half of women aged 18 64 accumulate the recommended minimum of 150 minutes of physical activity each week. Even more concerning is the fact that less than 1 in 4 do strength training at least twice a week.... Many women, especially mothers, say they dont have the time to exercise and they feel guilty about spending time away from their families to workout. ITS NOT SELFISH TO PRIORITISE YOUR HEALTH Its time for Australian women to put their health first and make time for regular physical activity. Not only is it not selfish to make yourself a priority, it also benefits your family by making you happier and keeping you around for longer. Need help prioritising your health? Not sure where to start? Contact our Exercise Professionals today, were here to help you find the right exercise for you, to help motivate you and overcome your barriers. 4049 1102 [email protected] #WomensHealthWeek #PrioritisingYourHealth #ExerciseThatMeetsYourNeeds #ExerciseStudioCairns #AlliedHealthCairns Source: https://exerciseright.com.au/five-reasons-exercise-is-powe/

21.01.2022 Womens Health Week: Dementia Dementia is the single biggest killer of Australian Women. A recent report released by the World Health Organisation suggested that exercise is one of the most powerful tools in reducing your risk of developing this debilitating condition. Exercise can improve executive function, which is how you process new information. It also preserves the size of the hippocampus, which is the part of the brain that stores new memories. It can also elevate ...blood biomarkers that promote new neuron cell growth. Decreased cardiorespiratory fitness is also a crucial factor when it comes to dementia risk. Cardiorespiratory fitness is defined by the ability of the body to utilise maximal oxygen uptake, and is commonly referred to as your VO2max. It has been found to be a greater predictor of the progression of dementia than physical activity participation alone. Therefore, being able to improve your cardiorespiratory fitness by increasing the intensity that you exercise, is one way you can help protect your brain. To increase and improve your cardiorespiratory fitness, you need to be performing exercise that elevates your breathing rate by enough to make it difficult to hold a conversation. Exercises including HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) & HIRT (High Intensity Resistance Training) lifting weights that feel heavy for you and progressively get harder as you get stronger is another way to help your brain. Not only does it promote independence when performing activities of daily living, it also helps reduce frailty which has recently been identified as another risk factor for dementia. Both HIIT & HIRT Classes are available at Complete Health. Any increase in exercise should be Medically (by your GP) cleared before participation, it is also recommended that you seek the advice and prescription of exercise from Exercise Professionals including Exercise Physiologists. 21.01.2022 POOR POSTURE MIGHT BE THE CAUSE OF EXHAUSTION, PAIN AND INDIGESTION This is all important because chronic poor posture can lead to low energy. Muscle fibres ...become shorter and contracted. The body automatically uses energy to maintain the contraction in the shortened fibres. At times this can lead to chronic fatigue, headaches, unexplained aches and pains throughout the body and occasionally digestive problems. Long term rounded shoulders create compression through the lungs and could lead to habitual shallow breathing. This restricts oxygen distribution in the body, and can also leave us vulnerable to infections as were not doing deep breathing that can cleanse the lungs. The knock-on effect of compression through the body can generate a slow and sluggish digestive system and increasing fatigue. While the tight, short muscles burn up energy, the weak, long muscles dont fire properly. These weak muscles must re-establish both their strength and nervous system responses to regain their functionality.

19.01.2022 Womens Health Week: Reproductive Health Exercise is beneficial for those trying to fall pregnant, as well as during and after pregnancy. Being active and living a healthy lifestyle helps to manage your weight, and those who are a health weight have less difficulty conceiving. Exercise, when prescribed by a qualified professional, is both safe and beneficial during pregnancy. In fact, research has shown mothers who exercise during pregnancy are less likely to have overweigh...t children. Babies born to active mothers also develop better motor skills. 18.01.2022 Womens Health Week: Cardiovascular Health- Cardiovascular Disease is: - the leading cause of death in Australian women - 90% of women in Australia have at least one risk factor for heart disease... - Women are 4 times more likely to die from heart disease than breast cancer - 2/3 of women are not aware heart disease is such a risk for them Cardiovascular disease (CVD) affects over half a million Australian women each year, and killed over 22,000 women in 2016. Despite these scary statistics, CVD is mostly preventable through a healthy lifestyle including regular physical activity (https://www.aihw.gov.au/). Cardiovascular Disease is often the result of smoking, overweight, poor diet, lack of exercise/physical inactivity. diabetes, family history, ethnic background, depression, ageing and menopause. These can lead to increases in blood pressure (high blood pressure/Hypertension), increases in cholesterol (high cholesterol), Diabetes - further increasing the risk of developing Cardiovascular Disease. Having consistently high blood pressure can damage artery walls, the heart and other organs, increasing your risk of heart attack and stroke. Just as exercise strengthens muscles in the body, it helps your heart muscle become more efficient and better able to pump blood throughout your body. This means that the heart pushes out more blood with each beat, allowing it to beat slower (lower your heart rate) and keep your blood pressure under control. Exercise also helps with weight management, better insulin resistance. 16.01.2022 Did you know? A healthy muscle mass can help protect against the chronic diseases that come with ageing, such as cancer. Physical inactivity, however, reduces the quality of muscle mass by increasing fat in the muscle" explains Rob Newton, professor of Exercise Medicine at Edith Cowan Univeristy.... 15.01.2022 Womens Health Week: Osteoporosis Did you know we reach our peak bone mass by our 30s!? Women are at greater risk of developing Osteoporosis due to the rapid decline in oestrogen levels during menopause. Women can also be at greater risk from changes to other hormones which affect bone mineral absorption, this can be due to previous cancer treatment, a thyroid conditions or coeliac disease. ... Exercise can help! Strength exercise in particular! Our bones strengthen when they are stimulated by push, pull and impact forces placed upon the body. Meaning moderate to heavy weights from strength training and impact forces from activities like jumping, skipping and sports are the best forms of exercise to help reduce the risk later in life. At Complete Health Cairns we have a class dedicated to clients with Osteoporosis - Osteo-cise. These classes are run twice a week for 60min duration. We ensure the appropriate exercises and loads are used for each client to maximise their bone and muscle strength, while considering each clients individual needs and abilities. 11.01.2022 Fathers Day Gift Ideas! With Fathers Day just around the corner (Sunday 6th Sept) its time to start thinking about what gift to give, and were here to help! Lets look after Dad this Fathers Day, just like Dad looks after us! ... Does your Dad or Partner suffer from aches and pains? Did you know that Massage can assist with this? If your muscles are tender to the touch, a traditional Swedish massage (or relaxation massage) is great! It stimulates blood and lymph circulation, bringing newly oxygenated blood to tender areas. This oxygenated blood helps to "flush out" toxic waste (in the form of lactic acid) in your muscles, which is the cause of typical soreness. Sore muscles are essentially the result of micro-tears in the muscle fibres and the inflammation those tears cause. Inflammation is due to the release of certain substances into the body called cytokines, but massage has been shown to suppress these molecules from being released, which decreases inflammation and pain. Purchase Dad a Massage Voucher for Fathers Day! Vouchers can be purchased via email or in studio. Bonus, if you purchase a pack of 5 Massages, youll receive the 6th FREE under our Birthday Sale, available until August 31st . #FathersDayGiftIdeas #LookAfterDad #FathersDay #MassageTherapy #MassageTherapistCairns

09.01.2022 Heres some good news for our NDIS clients with Down Syndrome (DS). Down Syndrome is an intellectual disorder that has accelerated age related degeneration much of which surrounds poor body composition, low strength and balance, and immature respiratory and cardiovascular systems. Research shows that the incorporation of HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) into exercise programs for individuals with Down Syndrome helps to achieve critical health outcomes in a more time ...efficient manner. Bonus, research also shows that HIIT can be fun for those with Down Syndrome as it allows for more creativity in the way exercise is prescribed and performed, all whilst maintaining safety under the guidance and supervision of Accredited Exercise Physiologists. Individuals with DS tend to be hypotonic (have abnormally low muscle tone) resulting in weak muscles and ligaments, this predisposes these individuals to sprains and strains. This highlights the importance of exercise for individuals with DS to be appropriately guided by an Accredited Exercise Physiologist. Book in now for an appropriate individualised exercise plan from our Accredited Exercise Physiologist who is NDIS registered. 4049 1102 [email protected] . #ExercisePhysiologyCairns #NDISCairns #AlliedHealthCairns #ExerciseAndDownSyndrome

01.01.2022 Womens Health Week: Cancer Breast Cancer is the most common cancer in Australian Women. FACT - Cancer patients who exercise regularly experience fewer and less sever side effects from treatment.... They also have a lower relative risk of cancer recurrence and a lower relative risk of dying from their cancer. As Professor Prue Cormie says - "If the effects of exercise could be encapsuled in a pill, it would be prescribed to every cancer patient worldwide, and viewed as a major breakthrough in cancer treatment." At Complete Health our Exercise Physiologists prescribe exercise for Breast Cancer patients. Part of an individualised exercise program requires considering all aspects of health including cardiac, skeletal, muscle & mental health components. Whilst every client will have a unique and individual exercise plan for their cancer, there are general guidelines when using exercise as medicine to help during treatments. 1. Be physically active as often as possible, but start where you are not where you want to be. 2. Exercise is not a one size fits all - we individualise to what you need. 3. Get outside in nature, or join group classes to get extra mental health benefits with your exercise. To book an appointment with our Exercise Physiologists contact us today. 4049 1102 [email protected] #WomensHealthWeek #BreastCancerAndExercise #ExercisePhysiology #AlliedHealthCairns Image Credit: https://www.medibank.com.au/
