25.01.2022 Small movements can have a significant impact on both your physical and mental health. And, you can do them all from the comfort of your home or work without changing into gym clothes. The Six Benefits of Movement MUSCLES: By moving, you are strengthening your muscles, which improves stability, balance, and coordination. Don’t forget, stretching helps maintain your muscle health as well. ... BONES: Movement helps build more durable, denser bones. Bone-building activities like resistance training (weights), weight-bearing exercises (jogging, walking, hiking), and balance training (yoga) can support better bone density. JOINTS: By being aware of how you move, you can increase coordination and balance, be mindful of the positioning of your joints, and relax. Plus, yoga encourages flexibility and range-of-motion, which boosts joint flexibility and joint function. BRAIN: Walking 30-40 minutes a day three times per week can help regrow the structures of the brain linked to cognitive decline in older adults. HEART: According to the British Heart Foundation, we can avoid around 10,000 fatal heart each year if we keep fit, so start moving and try cycling to improve your heart health. Regular cycling can cut your risk of heart disease by 50%. LUNGS: Keeping your rate up improves your cardiorespiratory endurance. #completelyaligned #osteo #osteopathy #osteoaustralia #osteopathicmedicine #move #fitness #movement #health #workout #motivation #exercise #mobility #strength #happy

23.01.2022 Humans have a total of 24 ribs, set out in 12 pairs. The ribs form a protective cage around our vital organs, including the heart, lungs and liver. The ribs are also an important part of our breathing. There are three main types of ribs: True ribs - these attach directly to the chest bone (aka sternum) False ribs - these attach indirectly to the chest bone via pieces of cartilage at the front of the rib cage Floating ribs - these literally float at the back of our bod...ies and have no extension to the front. 23.01.2022 Superfoods...why are they important? #SuperfoodSaturday Superfoods offer some very important nutrients that can power-pack your meals and snacks, and further enhance a healthy eating pattern. Here are a couple of easy options to add into your diet: High in fiber, berries are naturally sweet, and their rich colors mean they are high in antioxidants and disease-fighting nutrients. When berries are not in season, it is just as healthy to buy them frozen. Add to yogurt, cereals, and smoothies, or eat plain for a snack. Dark, leafy greens are a good source of vitamin A, vitamin C, and calcium, as well as several phytochemicals (chemicals made by plants that have a positive effect on your health). They also add fiber into the diet. Throw them into salads or sauté them in a little olive oil. You can also add greens to soups and stews.

15.01.2022 Should you rest with back pain? - #MythMonday Research has proven that being sedentary (lying down and not moving for fear of injuring your back further) is an absolute myth. The body, and in particular the spine, needs movement to continue to function and to heal itself. Movement is as simple as a walk, wearing sturdy, shock absorbing footwear at a comfortable speed. Swimming is also very good exercise when you have a sore back as it takes out the element of gravity on t...he spine. So the old adage don’t take back pain lying down still rings true.

15.01.2022 Did you know we can help with your breathing? And THAT is important! A healthy diaphragm helps maximise your oxygen intake, with minimal effort. When its not working quite as it should, then your body begins relying on all its secondary breathing muscles (especially those around the neck). This can cause imbalances and muscle tightness, leading to pain in the neck, shoulders and upper back. So, if youre experiencing tightness in any of these areas, come and see us well g...et your breathing patterns sorted and have you breathing at max capacity again in no time. 11.01.2022 Nearly all of us have suffered from a headache at some point. However, the headache you experience may not be the same as someone else’s. That’s because there are four different types, each having its own pattern of pain and cause. So once you know what type of headache you have, the better you’ll be able to deal with it. The four major types of headaches: Tension headache Tension headaches are the most common type of headache, affecting as many as 8 out of 10 people.... What does it feel like? A tension headache is usually described as a tight band or ‘pulling’ feeling around your head. The pain generally stays the same and does not throb. What causes them? It might surprise you to learn that the source of pain in tension headache is tender muscles in the head and neck. When you are stressed or tired, the muscles in your head and neck become sore and tender. When these muscles become tense, the pain travels up to your head and you feel it as a headache. What triggers them? Stress, poor posture, bright lights, and loud noises often trigger tension headaches. Migraine headaches What does it feel like? Migraine pain feels like a throbbing or pulsing pain on one side of your head. You may also experience nausea and sensitivity to light, and even get visual problems such as flashing lights or zigzag lines. What causes them? It’s not fully understood what causes a migraine, but it’s thought to be associated with increased blood flow to the head. What triggers them? Migraines can be brought on by bright lights, certain foods and hormone changes. Cluster headaches What does it feel like? Cluster headaches get their name because the attacks come in groups and often with little warning. You might experience sudden or severe pain behind your eye and sometimes on one side of your head. What causes them? It’s not known what causes cluster headaches, but it’s thought to involve the hypothalamus, the brain’s ‘biological clock’. What triggers them? There are no associated triggers for cluster headaches, although alcohol is thought to set them off. Sinus headache What does it feel like? Sinus headaches feel like a dull, throbbing pain in the front of your head and face. You may feel pressure or fullness around your eyes, cheeks, and forehead. It often gets worse if you move or bend forward. What causes them? Sinus headaches are caused by congestion and inflammation in your sinuses, the air-filled cavities around your nose, eyes, and cheeks. What triggers them? Allergies, hay fever or a cold can bring on a sinus headache. When should I be concerned about my headache? Most headaches are not a sign of a more serious illness. However, you should see your doctor if: Your headache is the result of a head injury You develop problems with your vision such as blurriness Headache symptoms become severe Headache is accompanied by other symptoms such as fever or vomiting.

09.01.2022 It’s Lung Health Awareness Month..to acknowledge this, we’re going to share one of our favourite lung strengthening exercises each week. | Diaphragmatic Breathing| Diaphragmatic breathing, or belly breathing, engages the diaphragm, which is supposed to do most of the heavy lifting when it comes to breathing. This technique is particularly helpful in people with COPD, as the diaphragm isn’t as effective in these individuals and could be strengthened. The technique best used... when feeling rested. If you have COPD, ask your doctor or respiratory therapist to show you how to use this exercise for best results. According to the COPD Foundation, you should do the following to practice diaphragmatic breathing: 1. Relax your shoulders and sit back or lie down. Place one hand on your belly and one on your chest. 2. Inhale through your nose for two seconds, feeling the air move into your abdomen and feeling your stomach move out. Your stomach should move more than your chest does. 3. Breathe out for two seconds through pursed lips while pressing on your abdomen. 4. Repeat.

08.01.2022 Pursed-lip breathing #LungHealthAwarenessMonth Pursed-lip breathing is a simple way to control shortness of breath. It helps quickly slow your pace of breathing, which makes each breath deeper and more effective. It also helps release air that’s trapped in your lungs. It can be used any time you’re experiencing shortness of breath, especially during the difficult part of an activity, such as bending, lifting objects, or climbing stairs.... To perform pursed-lip breathing: 1. Relax your neck and shoulder muscles. 2. Slowly breathe in through your nose for two counts, keeping your mouth closed. 3. Purse your lips as if you’re about to whistle. 4. Breathe out slowly and gently through your pursed lips to the count of four.

Doing this triggers the inverse myotatic reflex, a protective reflex that calms the muscle to prevent injury. The Hold-Relax PNF technique This involves:... 1. Putting a muscle in a stretched position (also called a passive stretch) and holding for a few seconds. 2. Contracting the muscle without moving (also called isometric), such as pushing gently against the stretch without actually moving. This is when the reflex is triggered. 3. Relaxing the stretch, and then stretching again while exhaling. This second stretch should be deeper than the first.

04.01.2022 "When we take the time to examine the beauty of the world around us, we are able to see parallels within our own lives. One who in tune with nature is in tune with the practice of living. Nature moves in a spiral as do our personal lives. It is important to spend time in nature because in this way we can become aware of its wisdom. If we ignore the beauty of nature and spend all our time in an urban jungle, our stress levels go up and we begin to feel as if we are made out of the concrete that we see all around us." #completelyaligned #yourosteopathcares #osteo #osteopathy #explore #outdoors #walk #nature #fitness #walking #photooftheday #outdoors #beautiful #hike

02.01.2022 "The saying goes that "man is dogs best friend". Others find that other pets are also up to the task. The companionship that animals offer is different from human interaction. Human communicate with speech and although this is an advanced form of communication, it has its limitations. Sometimes people struggle to say the right thing when what we really need is to be simply there for each other. Because animals cannot talk they are superior to humans in detecting the feel...ings of others. A pet may be able to offer a level of companionship that is deeper and more satisfying than human interaction" Why not share a picture of your pet with us today? This is my puppy dog, Pepper.
