14.01.2022 TUESDAY TIPS - Increasing Strength The importance of progressive overload 1. I’m sure all of us have plateaued in some area of our fitness goals, and it’s not difficult to understand why. 2. Progress comes from a change in training stimulus to your body (diet aside). That’s why perhaps when you first started going to the gym or for a run you saw results but this progression eventually slowed and maybe even stopped.... 3. Progressive overload is what needs to be focused on here. It refers to the consistent increase in intensity - whether that be more weight, reps, volume (sets), frequency and/or duration - to induce physiological change in your body. 4. Now not all of these elements have to be increased, but for strength, weight is the important factor here. THE PROBLEM: You are no longer seeing your strength increase. THE SOLUTION: pick any exercise you would like to improve your strength in - let’s say the barbell squat. For 3 weeks pick a weight you can perform 3 sets of 8 with. Each week attempt to beat the number of reps you completed the week before. Eg Wk1 8reps , Wk2 10reps , Wk3 11reps After the 3rd week increase the weight by 2.5-5kg and now attempt 3 sets of 8 with a your heavier weight, repeating this process all over again. REMEMBER: as a rule of thumb your training intensity should be increased every 3-4 weeks. Your body is smart and it will adapt quickly so change it up and push a little harder every time Hope this helps -Jason

04.01.2022 TUESDAY TIPS - Weight Loss Why you need to manage insulin and cortisol levels to loose weight: The stress cycle 1. The hormone cortisol is released into the bloodstream when you are stressed ... 2. If these levels stay elevated, glucose stores (from carbs you have previously eaten) in the liver are secreted into the blood stream. 3. Your body is thinking you are in a fight or flight situation and need an energy source to sustain your response, the problem is you're not stressed about being chased by a wild animal but instead the deadline at work your boss just gave to you. 4. Because you are not using this glucose that your body thought it needed, you then store this as fat. 5. If you are constantly stressed about work or even life in general you will of course try and find a way to lower this cortisol hormone to feel some relief right? 6. 100% yes! And we will do this buy eating high carb and sugary foods because this releases insulin into our blood stream forcing cortisol levels to drop giving us a break from our stressed out life. The Problem: carbs (glucose) are released when we are constantly stressed and carbs are ingested because we want to feel less stressed. Hence, we have way too many carbs running around in our blood stream and they will be stored as fat as they are not being used. The solution: DECREASE STRESS. And perhaps you are not in a position to do this immediately. Thats fine, you can eat a lean steak, drink a protein shake or have some nuts in replace of the sugary and starchy carbs your body is craving. -Jason

03.01.2022 TUESDAY TIPS - Weight Loss The importance of water - and are you getting enough? 1. A dehydrated body often leads to the liver taking over extra physiological functions that the kidneys would otherwise perform. With the livers attention divided, it gives less priority to metabolising fat into energy ultimately slowing the rate of fat loss. 2. Additionally, if your body does not receive enough water it assumes a survival situation, slowing your metabolism to conserve energy.... But this is exactly what you don’t want if you’re trying to burn fat. You of course want to maximise your body’s energy expenditure to burn calories at a faster rate. 3. Lastly, water helps reduce your cravings for snacks and large food portions providing enough is consumed prior to each meal. SO... THE PROBLEM - not drinking enough water will definitely hinder your weight loss goals. THE SOLUTION - drink water, and a lot of it! I recommend 2L per day, to be on the safe side. If you do this you will guarantee: an increased metabolism a faster and more efficient fat burning rate reduced cravings and more energy Hope this helps! - Jason
