22.01.2022 Recipe for one of the easiest cheeses you can make Ricotta. Add your own herbs from your garden to flavour your cheese. Don't forget everything you may need to make cheeses, yogurts, sour bread dough now in stock at Comps Poultry. I will be getting online shop updated with new products over coming week as well. Citric Acid, cheese salt, Rennet liquid, calcium chloride, cheese clothes and many products and don't forget Ginger Beer plants also available this week, along with al...l our normal Poultry Products. Lets see your photo's as you try out our recipes. Ricotta Cheese Recipe Ingredients 2 litres whole cows milk (use 2lt of bottled full cream milk not UHT) or if you are milking your own cow or goat a great way to use all that milk. cup pure cream teaspoon citric acid powder 1 teaspoon cheese salt 1. Add milk to a large saucepan with the cream, citric acid and the salt and mix together with a whisk. 2. Slowly heat the mixture to between 85C and 90C, stirring frequently. 3. When the curds and whey separate, remove from the heat and cover the pan, letting the curds set for about 10 minutes. 4. Strain through cheese clothe to separate the whey. The whey can be used in cooking or on the garden. 5. Leave the curds to drain for 10mins to 1 hour depending on how dry you want them to be. You can squeeze to remove extra whey. 6. Place in a container in the fridge. 7. Will keep in the fridge for up to 1 week. If using goats milk you will require a little more citric acid

20.01.2022 Some quick facts for newbies about egg production and chickens. Even the best bred layer does not lay over winter. Winter is when we have the least number of daylight hours, so as days get shorter our birds do what they call MOULT they loose all their feathers, some look so bad you carnt even recognise they are a hen. They gain weight stop laying so they can use this energy to stay warm and get ready for breeding season in spring.... Winter is the most important time to worm, fill your birds up with the best food you can and vitamins and minerals so they can lay at full capacity come spring and the days start getting longer. Isa Browns and hylines etc.. exactly the same. Commercials, they give them artificial light to keep them laying. But this also means they are not gaining strength and slowly deplete themselves of nutrients. These birds only have a very short lifespan, they are culled at 18 months old when finished, unlike our heritage breeds that can go for 8 to 10 years, if they are allowed to moult as nature intended. First season hens a little different. If they are coming up to laying age coming into winter then the chances are you will get some eggs from them over winter. This is because they have not spent their supplies as to say. Also depends on feed quality , worming etc...and of cause the weather patterns for the season(mild winter not too cold gets more eggs from these birds) But realize these hens will moult the first time they come under stress and you will not see eggs till spring if this happens. Laying ages: All breeds are different but rule of thumb Light breeds 17 to 18 weeks. Cross breeds a bit heavier in type 22 weeks. Heavy breeds anywhere from 28 weeks old to 34 weeks depending on the season. But in saying that heritage breeds live a lot longer then commercial laying breeds. Egg production has a lot of variables from type of bird to weather patterns, time of year and daylight hours. Most important quality balanced feed. Keeping birds wormed and in good health so they can lay, not using energy up feeding worms etc... Good quality care gives good quality eggs. Hopefully this answers a few questions as to how and when hens lay

11.01.2022 We have decided to expand our plants and ponds, going down the line of sustainable living. We have plants such as Boysenberries, Rosemary, Basil , Mint also some succulants, which we use the fish and the chooks, ducks to fertilize them so they grow well. 10.01.2022 Yes we are opening Saturdays only 10am to 2pm at the moment. For PRODUCT ONLY. It is moulting season so a good time of year to slow the breeders down. This time of year we do all our breeder maintenance, give them all their booster shots, trim spurs, worm, check for lice, mites etc... Plus fill them up with every bit of nutrition we can. What we do now determines how well they lay come spring. Good quality eggs give you good quality chicks, by giving them a rest now means th...ey will produce quality eggs come spring. Our breeding stock should not come back into lay until we get past the shortest day of the year which this year is the 21st of June. Then it depends on overcast days and weather as to how well and fast they start the new season. Heavy breeds can sometimes be a bit sluggish in the fertility department if still cold. So answer to the question I keep getting asked is spring we will be hatching thousands of eggs a week again. By this time hopefully we will also be coming out the other side of Covid-19 with a top selection of vaccinated healthy quality chicks. In mean time our ONLINE shop is posting daily for those who don't want to come visit us on Saturdays between 10am and 2pm for all your supplies, to do your poultry maintenance or need to ask any questions on poultry care feel free to come along and have a chat. See more

08.01.2022 This hot weather is bringing the rodents into poultry yards looking for feed and water and a cool place. Good time to go pickup nest boxes and look under waters and feeders and just check you haven't got any unwanted suprizes free loading eating you out of house and home. Rodents carry no end of diseases that can make your poultry unwell very quickly along with stick fast fleas etc... Pop into your pens after dark with a torch and have a look around for those little critters ...to be sure they haven't made a home with your birds. There is a huge choice of how to deal with them, if they have invaded. Permanent bait stations with Ratex(high margin bait so chooks etc can eat dieing mice and rats without getting sick) or no end of different types of live traps. All available on our online shop or pop into the farm shop or ask your local stock feeders to get your Ratex in for you if they don't have any in stock. www.compspoultry.com.au/shop/ See more
07.01.2022 Moulting Season The cycle of life in poultry. Your poultry follow the seasons as we do. We put on more clothes in winter to keep warm; we always put on a few more kilos in winter again so our bodies have enough stores to stay warm on those cold days and nights ahead. Then we use those stores of fat in spring, when it is time to get out and breed and enjoy warm weather and longer days as they approach. What tells poultry what season is coming is: the length of day light in the... day This time of year the day light hours are getting shorter, so your poultry are shedding feathers, replacing old feathers with new, knowing that there is cold weather coming soon. They slow down their laying so they can use their energy to lay down body fat, so they can keep warm in winter and prepare for spring, when they will use those stores to breed and lay eggs. All of this uses enormous amounts of energy. So as the daylight hours shorten over next few months your hens will have a break from laying, this is very normal, you will have feathers everywhere in your yards and some poultry will look absolutely bare of feathers, this is very normal. But you have to also do some major maintenance this time of year, what you put into your birds over winter will show come spring, when it is time for them to start laying and breeding again. 1. Worm your chickens(worms eat energy) 2. Ensure they have dry shelter and that wind cant get in. Just like us the wind factor can cause a lot of discomfort and use a lot of energy. 3. Look seriously at their diet. They need quality food, which can grow feathers and lay down fat stores. 4. Over winter, use your vitamin supplements(Peck Me Up formulated for moulting) to help your hens and roosters to be in the best condition they can, so coming into spring they can produce quality eggs and chicks for you. 5. Make sure your bait stations and rodent control is in place, they are looking for warm places to see out winter as well, they also carry a lot of nasties e.g. Stickfast fleas and disease. 6. Ensure your feed source is staying dry, but at same time in a position your poultry can access easily. Damp feeders often block up so check them regularly. Mouldy feed grows bacteria. 7. Ensure their water source is not mudding up.(ducks especially) 8. Check legs and toes regularly during prolonged wet periods to ensure mud is not getting stuck to their feet and causing discomfort. 9. Trim spurs on roosters, before spring, so they dont damage hens See more
06.01.2022 Hi Everyone, I'm afraid with facebook it is very hard to tell people, what is available. But we can let people know our protcols for weekend. REMEMBER OUR ONLINE SHOP IS AVAILABLE FOR PRODUCTS, INCLUDING 10KG AND 5KG BAGS OF FEED. wwww.compspoultry.com.au... You don't have to come to the shop for these things. Less people the better. If you decide you need to come out to shop for bigger items such as large bags of sawdust etc... Please DO NOT BRING THE KIDS. ONE PERSON ONLY. You will be asked to line up 2m apart back from the gate, so people can be let in as people leave. Ideas for you, anything under 6 weeks old requires external heat. We have heat lamps in stock, brooder packages etc.. We are going into winter, daylight hours are getting shorter so chickens do not lay eggs normally this time of year, unless first year pullets that are not moulting as yet. WE DO NOT HAVE ANY. Use this time of year to worm and fill birds up with vitamins etc.. So when daylight hours start getting longer they can come back into lay for you. Healthy birds produce lots of eggs. Do your maintenance, make sure you look at rodent control, they are the biggest carrier of lice and fleas and disease. AGAIN THESE PRODUCTS ARE AVAILABLE ON OUR ONLINE SHOP. No need to come to shop. Anything 6 to 8 weeks can go without heat, but you need to ensure they sleep somewhere warm, winter is coming. Please everyone stay safe. Minimize the risk for my family and staff. Don't bring the whole family to the shop I can not emphysis this more. This will go a long way to keeping everyone safe. Sorry to all those that have rang. I just can not physically answer the calls. Over 200 phone calls a day.

04.01.2022 Sorry, But with the Covid-19 season we have been totally under siege, with emails and calls requesting XXXXXXXX. WE HAVE NO OLDER XXXXXXX AVAILABLE. We are still hatching and still filling orders we already have. Until I have completed these, we will not be taking any more orders for XXX xxx XXXXX only. We do not buy and sell, our XXXXXX are bred here from our own breeding stock. This way our XXXX stay nice and healthy and we vaccinate every XXXX. We are now going into win...ter which means our breeding stock are moulting, so egg supply drops until spring. We will still have some XXXXX hatching each week, but no where the numbers we have in spring. With us doing orders over gate it has also slowed down how many people I can see in a day. We have to ensure everyone can care for XXX XXX XXXXX we are letting them take home. Our ONLINE shop posts product daily, (www.compspoultry.com.au) or if you want products that are too large to post, feel free to ping us an email with ORDER PRODUCT in capitals on subject line and ensure you put what you require and a phone number so we can organize pickup over the gate for you, with a credit card payment for ease of transaction. Sorry for the inconvience, but afraid we have to ensure the health of every XXXXXX we sell, so need to do this slowly and methodically to ensure they have the best chance at life. Thanks for your patience. Liz Compagnoni Comps Poultry and Birds
04.01.2022 Thank you everyone for your patience today. We have had the biggest day ever, in 25 years that Comps Poultry have been operating. Sorry if anyone felt pushed or rushed, but we needed to keep everyone moving and distanced from each other in these worrying times. I hope everyone had their questions answered, if you still have questions there is care pages on our website www.compspoultry.com.au or give us a few days to settle down and give us a ring. It was impossible for me to... answer phone calls today and I guess tomorrow will be the same with over 80 missed calls on my phone tonight. Never mind 200 emails and messages. We will do our best to help everyone, over coming days. Be aware if you require products it may be easier to order off our ONLINE SHOP on our website. We post daily and will save lining up and waiting. THANKYOU AGAIN FOR YOUR PATIENCE. A few photos for those that didn't make it today from morning , as we got going for the day and the line didn't get shorter till late in the day.
03.01.2022 Some photo's of the original pair of Ancona ducks that Comps Poultry started their breeding lines from 15 years ago thanks to a lovely breeder trying to save this breed in Australia located in outback NSW. Since receiving our original birds, we have spent 15 years developing them true to standard, so most true Ancona's in WA come from Comps Poultry lines and also a lot of eastern states birds started here in Western Australia as we shipped them all over Australia. Nice to see... them popping up around the country , but I have also noticed there is quite a few non standard birds popping up. We also been working on the crested Ancona's for a long time. But we seem to have some quite heavy types with too much black being called ancona's on the market. Ancona's are meant to be a medium sized duck. You can get Ancona's in Chocolate and the colour does throw thru our lines from time to time, but not dominant, we have never sold any of these and what I have seen on market obviously not at a very good standard as yet and need a lot of work to get them back to correct type. There is other colours available around the world, but Australian birds true to standard come in black and the odd chocolate. ( other colours seem to be still at developement stage eg other breeds added to get the colour) It would be lovely to see these birds rising in numbers as they are very pretty , lay well and make excellent pets also would be nice to see them in the Australian Poultry standards they are here, but haven't been documented as yet.
