24.01.2022 Is your computer running hot? Not up to speed? This is a common problem we see when you dont regularly service your computer! To avoid further damage to your PC get your computer serviced with us this December and mention this ad for 10% off labour!!!

23.01.2022 Hi everyone, our shop will be closed from the 25th of December and re-open on the 2nd of January. Any urgent enquiries during this time can be directed to Danny on 0407 967 242. We hope everyone has a safe and happy Christmas!

22.01.2022 BEWARE emails that say they are from Australia Post. We received this one this morning and it is Ransomware. For those of you that don't know, Ransomware is malicious software that encrypts files on your computer (so you cannot open them) and then asks for money to make your files work again. But of course, if you pay the money your files are not fixed. Please make sure you have good, recent backups as the data can only be saved about 50% of the time if your computer is effected by Ransomware. TIP: check to see the email address of who sent the email. If Australia Post had sent this email to me, it would have come from Australia Post [[email protected]] - not 'Australia Post [[email protected]]' Remember - if in doubt, throw it out.

17.01.2022 Does my computer need regular maintenance? The short answer is yes. Of course, most of us don't get our computer serviced - unless it has stopped working. The good news is that you can do most of the maintenance work yourself. I am pretty lucky as I am married to a computer technician and he gives my laptop a 'grease and oil change' about every 4 to 6 months. ... So, what does he do? Firstly he checks that everything is up to date: - My virus protection - My operating system - My firewall - Other protection software that helps stop Malware and the pop up advertising - Other essentials like Adobe Acrobat and Java and the programs I use most often - MS Office, Adobe Photoshop, my accounting software and the program for my electronic cutter. (You may not have the same software that I have but most programs need to have an update) Secondly, he does a disk cleanup. This is where he cleans out the temporary files that are saved on my computer while I am surfing the web - these can take up a lot of space on the computer. He also cleans out the history in my internet browser (Internet Explorer, Google Chrome or Firefox) which does annoy me sometimes but I must admit, it generally helps things run faster. When he has completed all of these tasks he then pulls my computer apart. As I mentioned, I have a laptop, so it can be a little tricky to pull apart - but he does this to clean out the inside. I always find it amazing how dusty and dirty it gets inside the computer. This is due to the fan that runs inside the computer to keep it cool. It drags cool air in and in the process, drags in a whole lot of dust. As you can imagine, this dust then 'clogs up the works' and the ventilation is compromised and the computer can overheat. This can result in slow performance and the computer shutting down as a last resort to cool down the processor. I always get into trouble for letting the dogs into my office - some of their hair gets into the computer too. Ooops. Danny cleans out all of the dust with a blower and a small brush for the stubborn bits. He will also remove the fan and oil it up to keep it performing at peak efficiency and add some new coolant to the processor. He then turns his attention to the keyboard and he reminds me that I should know better than to eat over my computer. There is inevitably crumbs and bits as well as dust. This is all cleaned out with a blower and brush and then with a small vacuum to make sure nothing is missed. Finally, when it is all back together, he uses a microfibre cloth and distilled water to clean the screen. I then have a lovely clean computer that is running fast and smooth. We do offer this service at Computable Repairs for a flat rate of $88. This service is also performed when we have a computer in for repair - for no additional cost.

15.01.2022 How important is it to backup my computer? It is essential that you have a backup of your computer. Everybody loses data at some stage - your hard drive could fail, a virus could delete important information or Ransomware could corrupt your data. Without a backup there are no guarantees that you will be able to retrieve your data. What if there is a fire or someone steals your computer? ... Any personal documents, photos, home videos, and any other data on your computer should be backed up regularly. Those can never be replaced. There are two major ways to backup your computer - with an external hard drive (known as on-site) or over the internet (known as off-site). As we stated earlier, it is essential to have at least one, but it is better to have both types of backups. Feel free to give us a call if you would like more information on backing up.

02.01.2022 Here is a little walk through history - I think this was before they were even called emails. Enjoy.

02.01.2022 Hi Everyone, I just received this email in my inbox this morning - another one to look out for! It is important to stay vigilant - if in doubt DO NOT OPEN THE ATTACHMENT AND DO NOT MAKE ANY PAYMENTS.... Please check out our earlier post on identifying Junk and Malicious Emails. Have a great day!

02.01.2022 HOW CAN I TELL THAT IT IS JUNK / MALICIOUS EMAIL? The junk emails these days are getting better and better at looking legitimate - so we need to be vigilant. There are always some tell tale signs: 1. Do you deal with the company that you have received an email from?... 2. Check the email address that the email has come from. Our sample shows an email address that is defiantly NOT Australia Post. 3. If it has a file with a .ZIP at the end of the file name and is very small in size - our sample one is 1Kb - it is generally malicious 4. Any anomalies in the content of the email - in our sample they have the price as $2.620 - it is unusual to have 3 decimal places. 5. If in doubt, throw it out! See more
