25.01.2022 ATTENTION CITIBANK USERS!! Please beware of a fake website masquerading as a real Citibank login page. It even goes so far as to be able to generate One Time Passwords (OTP) via SMS! Please check the URLs are legitimate before entering in any details! If you know any friends or family who could be affected by this or even anyone who needs a bit of phishing awareness training, feel free to get in touch! https://www.bleepingcomputer.com//this-citibank-phishing-/

25.01.2022 Happy 20th birthday to an age old classic PC game: Counter Strike. Who else spent their childhoods hunched in front of their CRT monitors at CyberHive blasting their Nighthawk pistols through the exhaust duct of a warehouse? Great to see the game remastered and played competitively around the world as an eSports title. It sure brings back good memories!... Photo credit: AORUS

24.01.2022 Sorry weve been AFK! Working on some beautiful builds for our customers and also doing a bit of writing. Today we discuss hard drive encryption and preventing unauthorised access to your data by crazy exs and even the government. Covers Windows, MacOS and even Linux! We can help you encrypt your computers if you need assistance. Just drop us a line!

24.01.2022 Were EA wrong for banning Linux users from playing Battlefield V? Its a tough call in our opinion as modification/use of custom DLLs is a common way to insert cheats but an essential component in running Windows-based games on Linux. https://www.bleepingcomputer.com//linux-gamers-banned-in-/

24.01.2022 Weve got an Instagram account! Our posting schedule will be a bit less regular there but well be trying to get some solid PC memes from time-to-time. Weve just finished a liquid cooling changeover. A nice upgrade from the stock Intel cooler to a Corsair All In One (AIO) liquid cooler. These small form factor sealed units present great value for money for those looking to get liquid cooling on a budget! And they can be quieter than stock fans! 24.01.2022 Transitioning from a 3 x 22" setup to a single 35" ultrawide monitor. The difference going from 60 Hz to 200 Hz is astonishing. Like our wallpaper choice on the new monitor? We do too! Want to know what to look for in your next monitor? Have a read of our previous post or drop us a line.... https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=328240077880630&id=326761704695134

23.01.2022 Wanting to build a fancy new computer with your EOFY tax return money? Our advice is to hold off for at least a week or two! Why? With AMD releasing their Ryzen 3000 series processors on 07/07/19, Intel are rumoured to be getting ready to (FOR THE FIRST TIME IN A LONG TIME!) discounting their Intel 9th generation processors by up to 15%. This is a big sign that the new AMD CPUs are a threat to Intels empire. Nonetheless, itll definitely benefit the consumers. Be on the lookout for some good value for money deals on Intel systems in the coming weeks.

23.01.2022 Delidding CPUs. This is a good follow-on post related to overclocking as it can also assist with getting that extra bit of performance. When Intel introduced their third generation CPUs, they changed how they bonded the chips to the thermal contact surface (The lid) of the CPU (Also referred to as the Integrated Heat Spreader or IHS) so it can dissipate the heat via the heat sink or water cooler. Rather than using solder, they opted with thermal paste which severely impaired ...the ability to remove heat from the processor. Delidding is effectively removing the lid from the CPU to replace the factory thermal paste with more efficient thermal transfer material. This has been proven to reduce temperatures under load by up to 20 degrees Celsius! Alternatively, the lid may not actually be reinstalled as some users opt to mount their water cooling blocks straight onto the CPU die. Now before you put a razor blade to your CPU, remember that delidding VOIDS YOUR WARRANTY. Yes that i9-9900K can become a $880 paperweight if you damage your CPU in the process. It is for this reason that we farm out this work for our customers. Have a chat with us if youd like to learn more. Photo credit: EK Water Blocks

22.01.2022 Our very own University of Adelaide have collaborated with the University of Michigan to release research on a security vulnerability in Intel processors. It can be exploited to access parts of a processors cache memory and sits in the speculative execution bug family. A lot of hard work goes into this sort of research and responsible disclosure. Massive credit to our friends in the research department. https://cacheoutattack.com/

21.01.2022 We dont mean to harp on but we all have that one mate who refuses to upgrade. Windows 7 end of life is here and users are only becoming more vulnerable as the days go on. Upgrade to Windows 10 (or try your luck with OSX or Linux)

21.01.2022 If you use any of the following: - Windows 7 - Office 2010 - Windows Server 2008 (Incl R2)... - SharePoint Server 2010 - Exchange Server 2010 - SQL Server 2008 (Incl R2) Please be aware that Microsoft are ending support for these pieces of software and you should consider upgrading. Continuing to use these pieces of software leaves you vulnerable to security bugs and lacking new features present in newer editions. Drop us a line if youre interested in learning more about protecting yourself from security vulnerabilities. See the link below for a comprehensive list of what software is not receiving support and associated dates. https://www.bleepingcomputer.com//microsoft-products-reac/

20.01.2022 ADSL 2+ vs. NBN. Whats the big deal? Quick maths: ADSL 2+ peaks at 24 Mbits/second. Yes thats Megabits (Mb) not Megabytes (MB) which you are generally accustomed to seeing on your download screens. Just divide the Megabit speed by 10 and thats roughly what it is in Megabytes. So the NBN can go UP TO 100 Mb/s which is about 10 MB/s. If your home was included in the initial NBN rollout under the Labor government, you would have gotten Fiber To The Premises (FTTP) which is ba...sically fiber cable being run straight to your house. This is the fastest option available. Under a more budget friendly government, people are now receiving Hybrid Fiber Coaxial (HFC) which uses existing copper cabling to your house from the "Exchange" which is the place where all the internet cables for your suburb meet before they go elsewhere. Fiber is run to the exchange only. Unfortunately, this is slower than FTTP as youre relying on crappy old copper cabling for part of your connection. So youve got the letter in the mail about NBN being available for your place? Your Internet Service Provider (ISP) should be able to set you up on the new network. Not sure when NBN will be available for you? Put your address into this service to see an expected ready date. https://www.nbnco.com.au/

18.01.2022 Home network hackers should take note of a newly discovered malicious campaign to take control of home routers. Specifically targeting those with the custom Tomato or DD-WRT firmware installed on their routers. If youd like help with keeping your router and internet devices up to date, please get in contact with us. https://arstechnica.com//internet-routers-running-tomato-/

18.01.2022 We don’t mean to harp on but we all have that one mate who refuses to upgrade. Windows 7 end of life is here and users are only becoming more vulnerable as the days go on. Upgrade to Windows 10 (or try your luck with OSX or Linux)

16.01.2022 Free vs. paid anti-virus (AV)? The answer may surprise you. Sorry for the clickbait title but we feel this is a really important topic. In our opinion, a paid service is generally going to net you a better product. Lets run through what these internet security companies do with your money. - Update malware signature databases to recognise the tens of thousands of daily new viruses. ... - Develop new virus scanning engines and invent ways to find malware. Modern scanning engines have started prioritising heuristics scanning mechanisms which detect malicious behaviour over the traditional signature based scanning which looks for specific "virus" files. Believe it or not, there are so many AV vendors on the market but they use one of a handful of engines built by big vendors. Often the vendors who hand out free AV products use engines which arent as cutting edge as the paid versions. Our picks? We recommend Emsisoft Anti-Malware, ESET Internet Security and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for our customers. Weve got some pretty good pricing options on these too. Contact us to learn more.

16.01.2022 So cats out of the bag! Heres what weve been working on over the past few weeks. Weve been testing and preparing these workstation machines for use as gaming computers or even 3D CAD type PCs. For our customers these are great value machines with a massive amount of RAM and a Xeon standard processor. It should be able handle A LOT of computing!... https://www.facebook.com/marketplace/item/2493832360668344/

16.01.2022 Mozilla have released a new feature on their Firefox browser which allows for DNS over HTTPS (DoH). Why this is so important? Everytime you enter a web address in, your browser makes a request to a Domain Name Server (DNS) to translate the web address to an IP address so it can process the request. Traditionally, this is done in plain text (unencrypted) so crooks could snoop on your web activity by monitoring your DNS requests. With some trickery, they could also send a fake... DNS response back to your browser and direct you to whatever malicious website they want. By using the HTTPS protocol for DNS, your requests are encrypted and not easily readable by third parties (Including your ISP). Want to learn more? Drop us a line and we can help you enable it on your Firefox installation.

15.01.2022 Now onto computer crime news: Vincent Ramos, the CEO of Phantom Secure who sell encrypted Blackberry phones to criminals and drug traffickers has been arrested. The fascinating part of this ploy was how the phones were configured. From evidence published, it appears as if this company obtains Blackberry phones after it leaves the factory and extensively modify them to pick up: - PGP encrypted email... - VPNs connecting to Hong Kong and Panama. - Remote wiping if the phones were seized. - GPS tracking to identify law-enforcement imposters. Now unfortunately, this was on a referral basis so you couldnt just walk into a shop and buy one of these law-evading devices. Oh and theyre on a subscription based service costing up to $4,400 per 6 months! The arrest is hopefully going to cripple this well-run operation. Maybe not. Well keep an eye on this story for you all!

15.01.2022 Its a well known fact that advertisers track your web clicks and have likely built a profile of you based purely on the websites you visit. This profile forms the basis of their targeted ads. Want to mess with those advertisers profiles of you? Well look no further. The team at Mozilla have developed this service where it opens up 100 tabs based on your chosen personality so itll throw these tracking services way out of sync. Want to be a hypebeast? influencer? 10.01.2022 NVIDIA and ASUS unveiled their 360Hz gaming monitor today at CES 2020. What an absolute monster considering the best performing monitors only sit at 240Hz refresh rate. Want the edge over your mate and to be able to repeatedly outgun them? Dont expect a small price tag though. https://youtu.be/wT8oK_pEpd8

10.01.2022 Its common knowledge that Google services such as Gmail and YouTube collect your usage data and use it for things like targeted advertising. An alternative email service which has been gaining popularity is ProtonMail. Theyve marketed themselves as an (freemium) encrypted email service. If youre worried about your privacy, do check them out. The article below shows their foray into the calendar space to compete with Apple and Google calendars. Its currently for paid subsc...riptions but definitely worth looking into. There are free, less invasive alternatives to most of the services you use. If youre keen to learn more, send us a message. https://www.theverge.com//protonmail-launched-encrypted-pr

10.01.2022 AMD are ramping up for a big year releasing their 64-core Threadripper CPU at CES 2020. Gunning for big computing power and big price tags. Dont expect to be putting these $4,000 (USD) processors into your gaming rigs especially when their better priced 16-core Ryzen 3000 series CPUs deliver better value for money. https://www.theverge.com//amd-64-core-processor-threadripp

09.01.2022 Looking for your next router? Wed suggest reading this piece of D-Link and how their lax security protocols in their devices have exposed their customers. In short, they claimed their devices have "Advanced Security" when in fact they had no testing schedules and no proof they undertook any. Well be second guessing future products from them from now on until they prove themselves. https://arstechnica.com//d-link-agrees-to-new-security-mo/

07.01.2022 To minimise how often we do big word vomits on this page, weve started posting through Medium. 06.01.2022 A bit late on the new year throwback but Engadget do a good job summarising this decades accomplishments. The introduction of Snapchat is a big one in our opinion! What piece of tech do you think defined the decade? https://www.engadget.com//12/31/tech-that-defined-the-dec/

06.01.2022 Weve written a guide on getting started with password managers and why you should start using them. Dont worry, were recommending a free password manager for all you thrifty tech users. https://medium.com//combating-hackers-with-free-password-m

06.01.2022 Tax season is fast approaching and so are the email scams. "Phishing" is a term used to describe a type of email which makes fraudulent claims as to the identity of the sender (Among other details) in an attempt to illicit confidential, personal or financial information from their victims. Scammers often go on large phishing campaigns close-to or shortly after public holidays, major annual events or even international incidents in an attempt to appear as legitimate as possibl...e. Google and Microsoft generally do a pretty good job of filtering these scam emails however, every now and then, some emails makes it past their net. As always, please be vigilant when assessing the validity of each email you read. If its too good to be true, chances are it is! If youre concerned about your parents, extended family etc. who may be vulnerable to these sorts of scams, the best thing you can do is educate them on how to identify and mitigate the risk. This is a service we offer and wed be more than happy to help keen newcomers to the internet better prepare themselves for a safer experience.

04.01.2022 Samsung producing an external solid state drive secured by biometrics. Great that it can store up to 4 fingerprints which makes it easy for sharing your old school video collection with mates. Hefty price tag but itll drop as other players enter the space. https://www.theverge.com//samsung-t7-touch-external-ssd-bu

04.01.2022 Definitely an interesting move by Microsoft announcing their foldable phone and foldable tablet: the Surface Duo and Surface Neo. In development for 3 years and set to hit the shelves in 2020. Dont worry. Its not running the horrendous Windows Phone OS. Theyve opted for Android and Windows 10X. No plastic folding screen like Samsung either so it should be a bit more resilient.

04.01.2022 Setting up a new home internet network? Lets talk routers. Most Internet Service Providers (ISPs) will supply modems/routers to you when you sign up. However, we would never recommend using them if your priority is speed or security. ISPs often make deals with low end hardware manufacturers so they can provide you with a complete package to get you connected. The quality of the modem/router is often subpar in this case as low end manufacturers often dont provide software up...dates addressing security vulnerabilities therefore leaving your entire network vulnerable to attack! Weve also noticed that these low end devices also for one reason or another, hamstring your internet speeds. So we avoid lawsuits, we tested an unnamed router bundled with an ISP package against a high-end consumer level router and we noticed a 5 Mb/s difference! Our advice is to upgrade yourself to a premium consumer level router! Have a chat with us if youd like recommendations and assistance in setting up.

04.01.2022 UPDATE your Windows 10 installations ASAP! The NSA disclosed a medium threat vulnerability to Microsoft and when youve got a nation state level intelligence group reporting it, its got to be important. Its tough being in the NSAs position as theyve got to decide whether to disclose this vulnerability or hoard it for use offensively. https://thehackernews.com//warning-quickly-patch-new-criti

04.01.2022 Nothing like the ceremonial peeling of plastics. It even smells like a new car. We optionally leave them on so you can enjoy the peel-age yourself!

03.01.2022 We learnt a lot from offensive security researcher Norman Yue at this years AISA Adelaide half day conference. Here we see him demoing a hardware keylogger into a mouse given all the real estate available inside of the case. This keylogger can siphon off your login credentials after youve logged into your favourite social media account. This is where we advise buyer beware when buying second hand goods. You dont know whos tampered with it. Whilst supply chain attacks ca...n occur for new hardware resulting in it being compromised before flying off the shelf, its much less likely than a tampered keyboard sold on Gumtree. #secdaySA

02.01.2022 How does overclocking work? Intel and AMD cram their CPUs with semiconductors sized in the nano meters (Thats 0.000000001 metres). When youre dealing with manufacturing processes on such a small scale, you cant guarantee that every CPU produced will work exactly the same as one another. So they came up with an idea to run the CPUs at frequencies considered "average" for that product range e.g. 3.5 GHz. That way, its safe and guaranteed to work. However, it means your CP...U is most likely operating below what it is capable of. Enter overclocking. Put simply; by pumping more voltage into the CPU you can increase its operating clock frequency and therefore squeeze that extra bit of performance for gaming or video processing. Sounds good right? What are the risks? If done improperly, you can fry your CPU and potentially damage your motherboard. Further, the additional heat generated by running at higher frequencies needs to be attended to via liquid cooling which can be costly. Still want to go ahead? Make sure your Intel CPU has a "K" on the end of its product name e.g. i9-9900K so you can actually overclock them. CPUs without the "K" are locked and cannot be overclocked. As a cheeky side note, AMD Ryzen CPUs are all unlocked from factory and ready for overclock ;) If youd like to get your desktop rig overclocked, please come and speak to us. We love squeezing that extra bit of juice out of your hardware.
