12.01.2022 What are Phishing emails ? Phishing emails are often targeted and designed to lure you into providing passwords, banking details or other sensitive information. They are often well put together and may look like it has come from a legitimate or known source. If you were not expecting it, be suspicious. What is Spam ? Spam is unsolicited or promotional messages that often request personal or financial information. What do you do if you receive a suspicious email?... Don’t click on links or attachments in emails unless you recognise the sender and are sure the content is safe. Pay attention to URLs and email addresses, often these will be very similar to legitimate addresses however will differ slightly. Don’t reveal personal or financial information in emails. Review social media accounts to ensure privacy levels are appropriate. Often attackers will trawl through social media to gather intelligence for an attack If you get an email that you're sure is spam, go ahead and right click it in outlook, then select Junk -> Block Sender. If an email looks suspicious but you're not 100% sure, report it to your IT dept. How can I protect myself from these attempts? The most important aspect to prevention is education. Computer systems can only block so much - hackers will always find a way to send you these types of attempts, so knowing how to identify them is the best way to avoid being duped.
