25.01.2022 Heres some wonderful news that we can all celebrate together more than 2000 vulnerable Victorians housed temporarily in hotels will get ongoing housing options and support throughout the pandemic, and out the other side! This is an insightful and forward-thinking decision by the Victorian Government that will make such a difference for thousands of people experiencing homelessness, and bring hope for the future in the midst of the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic,... says Concern Australia CEO Michelle Crawford. Through the work of our Steps Outreach Service and Inside Out programs, we see firsthand the impact that insecure housing and homelessness has on young people. On their behalf, we say thank-you to the Victorian Government for this welcome announcement, and commit to working with the Government and other agencies to support young people throughout the process and into the future. For many years Concern Australia has particularly appreciated the advocacy and representation that Housing Minister Richard Wynne has made on behalf of disadvantaged Victorians. There is still much more to be done, but this is a huge step in the right direction. 25.01.2022 If it wasnt for you, I wouldnt be alive. Hear powerful stories about how our Steps Outreach Service supports young people experiencing homelessness and provides a soft place to fall in this interview with Anne and Grace on the Community Heart with Paul & Mark radio show. Anne and Grace also give a real insight into the challenges that COVID-19 has created for young people who were already vulnerable, and the ways the Steps team has adapted so they can continue providin...g crucial support. The isolation is massive, says Grace. A lot of the young people we meet feel alone. Being in a room by yourself for the whole day takes its toll. 22.01.2022 Life in COVID-19 lockdown has looked different for people throughout the community. Some have been at home with families, some in share houses, and others have spent the time on their own. In our Inside Out houses, young people who have experienced challenging lives have been sharing lockdown with their live-in mentors. To help them cope with the inevitable cabin fever, our team of youth workers have been coming up with creative weekly challenges for the young people. They g...et points for each challenge, and the young person with the most points after lockdown finishes will receive a huge prize pack. We shared about the first challenge, the Bake-Off, a few weeks ago: https://tinyurl.com/ycpo7epl Since then, the young people have also taken part in: - Easter egg eating challenge - Spoken word/rap challenge - Graffiti/art competition - Garden ornament competition Theres more detail about these competitions below. These are just some of the ways that our team responds creatively to support the young people who come into our care. What creative things have you been doing during lockdown? Find out more about Inside Out: www.concernaustralia.org.au/inside-out/ THE COMPETITIONS Easter egg eating: Young people were given a chocolate bunny and asked to eat it in a creative way, with the fastest time winning the challenge. One young person hung theirs from a washing line and another dressed up as a rainbow to eat her egg - which she did in 15 seconds! Rap and spoken word: Young people were invited to create a spoken word piece or rap and perform it over video. Entries ranged from young people writing about their mental health and experience of isolation, asking their live-in mentors to perform for them, or sending through photos of their work. Graffiti: The young people were provided textas, colouring pencils and an A3 art book and encouraged to produce a piece of graffiti or art. Garden ornament: This challenge encouraged the young people to use what they have lying around the house and upcycle it into a creative garden ornament. #COVID19 #FlattenTheCurve #Lockdown #YoungPeople #Creativity #InsideOut

08.01.2022 Our teams keep adapting to support vulnerable young people during the pandemic. We recently introduced this Car Mechanic Simulator game for Hand Brake Turn students that they will use every Wednesday to continue their practical learning away from the workshop. Check out the video, turn up your speakers and start grooving!... Our trainers join the students online and repair and service cars in a virtual environment that builds their knowledge, skills and enthusiasm from the safety of their home and its fun! Who says you can't learn how to repair a car while in lockdown!?!? Many of our Hand Brake Turn students need the tailored, one-on-one attention and support provided by workshop classes with our trainers, and lockdowns have also highlighted the literacy and numeracy challenges that many face. This means that standard approaches to online learning, such as independent reading and writing based tasks, dont meet their needs. Now she has the stability of living in one of our Inside Out homes and she's looking to the future.... Learn more about Renee's story, and the touching Mother's Day card she wrote to one of our Youth Workers. You can support young people like Renee.
