Appear to be in their ‘own world’. Have poor concentration. Have poor fine and gross motor skills . Have poor sleep patterns . Have a restricted diet . Dislike self-care tasks (e.g. showering, hair-washing, dressing, etc.). Display sensory seeking behaviour such as spinning, constant running around, jumping, crashing . Prefer solitary play. Dislike changes in routine. Have difficulties making friends . Occupational therapists can help children with self regulation difficulties reach their full potential . 19.01.2022 Hands up parents who sometimes (or regularly) experience difficulties encouraging their children to eat a variety of foods . Fussy eating or problematic feeding can often leave parents feeling concerned and disheartened Speech pathologists who are experienced in paediatric feeding can support children who are fussy eaters or problematic feeders and their families to tolerate a greater variety of food which in turn can support improved nutritional outcomes ...Eating is a highly sensory activity and many picky eaters refuse food based on how they look or feel . Messy play can be one helpful strategy to indirectly encourage eating through experiencing and exploring different textures and colours. Please note, children should engage in messy play at their own pace and not be forced. This should be discussed with an experienced speech pathologist. Please also keep in mind that if your child has swallowing difficulties (dysphagia) this must be considered and a care plan developed by an experienced speech pathologist, based on your child’s individual needs. For more information please get in touch with our friendly team on 08 8337 8770

05.01.2022 Did you know that many children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) have difficulties regulating their emotions which can lead to sensory meltdowns. Sometimes it can be hard to tell the difference between a tantrum and a sensory meltdown, but they're very different! For children with ASD, when they reach the point of sensory, emotional, and information overload , or even just too much unpredictability, it can trigger a variety of external behaviours that are similar to a tan...trum (such as crying, yelling, or lashing out), or it can trigger a complete shutdown and withdrawal . It is important to understand that meltdowns are not manipulative and are outside of a child's control. We understand that meltdowns are an awful experience; both for your child and for you. Seeing your child suffer can be heart-wrenching , and keeping them safe while it’s happening is critical. Paediatric occupational therapists can assist families to understand individual triggers and provide strategies to support children should a meltdown occur. For more information or to make an appointment with one of our paediatric occupational therapists, please contact Connect Allied Health on 8337 8770

02.01.2022 Did you know that the first five years of a child’s life are said to be the most critical for their future learning and development? Evidence-based research describes rapid increase in brain mass and development during this time. A child's exposure to language, literacy, and communication with their family, friends, and peers will significantly influence this. Our experienced speech pathologists love book-sharing and singing nursery rhymes to stimulate language ...and speech skills. What's your favourite activity to share with your child? Let us know in the comments below! If you'd like more information about early learning activities please contact us on 0400 590 831 or head to our website connectalliedhealth.com.au

02.01.2022 Did you know that Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a pervasive developmental disorder that impacts development across the lifespan? Social communication , restricted interests and behaviours and sensory processing differences are the main areas of development affected. The cause of ASD is currently not known . Receiving a diagnosis of ASD provides information regarding an individual’s strengths and differences, which can help clients and families better understand... certain behaviours or areas of difficulty. This in turn can facilitate improved support for individuals with ASD and can also help facilitate access to specific services . Connect Allied Health have capacity to provide diagnostic assessments of ASD in August 2019. This is with our Principal Speech Pathologist and Director, Sarah Tilley, in our Campbelltown clinic. For more information or to arrange for an assessment of Autism Spectrum Disorder, please contact 08 8337 8770, email [email protected] or check out our website connectalliedhealth.com.au
