24.01.2022 Today marks the end of Homelessness Week 2020, an important national annual event to shine a light on homelessness, to learn from the voices of people with live...d experience of homelessness and collectively reflect on what we need to do to change perceptions and stigmas to end homelessness. The Department extends a note of thanks to the team at Shelter WA for their dedication and support to the cause and to the Western Australian community for getting involved and spreading awareness. For more information on responding to and preventing homelessness in Western Australia and to read Western Australias 10-Year Strategy on Homelessness 20202030, visit https://www.communities.wa.gov.au/st/homelessness-strategy/ #HW2020

20.01.2022 Weve just announced a huge boost that will help thousands of Western Australians access TAFE and training courses with massive cuts to fees and a range of shor...t courses that will be completely free. As the economy recovers, skilled workers across a range of trades and occupations will be in high demand, which means that training will be vital to develop a skilled workforce. Our new $57 million package to support TAFE and training with make sure Western Australians can access the courses and training they need to access jobs in key areas. Last year we slashed fees on 34 WA TAFE courses with our Lower Fees, Local Skills initiative. Today were expanding that to cover another 39 courses - including things like agriculture, construction, plumbing, electrical trades, METRONET, nursing, early childhood education, manufacturing, community services and more. Fees for all these courses will be cut by at least 50%, with some course costs slashed by as much as 72%. From the second semester, the maximum annual fee students will pay is capped at $400 for concession students and youth and $1,200 for non-concession students. Weve also provided $25 million for Free TAFE Short Courses that have been developed alongside industry to engage displaced workers and youth and meet immediate and emerging skill requirements as the economy recovers. The free short courses will provide a launch-pad for students to up-skill for new jobs and provide pathways to full qualifications. The initial list of 15 short courses will be available to around 13,500 Western Australians and includes courses in heavy vehicle training, hospitality, logistics, cyber security, agriculture, civil construction and small business. The free short courses can also be used as a credit towards a full qualification from the expanded Lower Fees, Local Skills initiative. Enrolments for the TAFE courses will open on Monday 6 July 2020. For more information visit www.jobsandskills.wa.gov.au or contact your local Jobs and Skills Centre on 13 64 64. We have also put in place our Apprenticeship and Traineeship Re-engagement Incentive to get apprentices and trainees who lost their contracts during the COVID crisis back on the job. The Incentive provides employers with a one-off payment of $6,000 for hiring an apprentice and $3,000 for hiring a trainee whose training contract was terminated on, or after, March 1, 2020. Theres never been a more important time to invest in training and with these initiatives, theres never been a better time to learn new skills.

06.01.2022 The incredibly long awaited update to the Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) Rule dropped this morning with a much needed amendment to a key section. The SDA Rule now allows people to share an SDA property with people not eligible for SDA (or NDIS for that matter). This means people can live with their partner, children or friends, regardless of whether or not they have a disability.
