24.01.2022 I’m lucky to have happened across a lot of fun projects of late. A recent fav was writing piece descriptions for a local artist’s website. It’s a different beast to describe images compared to a practical object.... I tapped into the inner drama as I got to use aaall the theatrical tone. Sometimes, it’s the clients who make the project fun too. The ones who’s business becomes like your own, you champion their success and cheer their wins. What fun projects or clients have you had lately?
23.01.2022 At first glance (and chuckle), I thought the same of March and April. Then I got to thinking about what had been achieved. Wrote a TV ad script - super weird having your words read out in a man's voice by the way... Editorial printed in an SA publication Chipped away on 3 really cool web copy projects Started a 6 page information flyer Had a blast writing a government grant submission Social posts and some other bibs and bobs All amongst home schooling home therapying (new word) impromptu hospital visits few meltdowns too many FaceTime gins And so, I understand why it's been such a blur. Also, feeling equal parts chuffed and exhausted. Thanks for the share Kate Toon and Insta-Chaz Happy Monday folks!
23.01.2022 Feedback. The ‘bad’ kind too. Your business is your baby. My job is to slam dunk how you sound. I get the feels when you get the results. And if I’ve not hit the ball out of the park, I love to hear why. Let me give it another shot.... I appreciate it when you tell me if it’s sh*t or hit. I work at home, by myself. My kids aren’t skilled in editing and copy. I'm self taught in online courses, books, podcasts and tutorials. Feedback doesn’t need to be cringeworthy. Uncomfortable. Awks. Hearing you are awesome is great of course. But where do you go after that? So hit me with it. I appreciate it! Everyone wins when everyone gives an F
21.01.2022 This is exactly how I describe writing! Like composing music! The words sit with your heart via the eyes, the same way music touches your heart via your ears.
18.01.2022 Who’s guilty? No matter HOW many times you read your own writing, those pesky little errors seem to hide, don’t they? Until you post the post.... Or send the text. Or fire off the email. As I’m not (yet) at the point of hiring my own proof reader, here are a few tips that I found that help me. *Run it through a writing appI love ProWriting Aid *Get a coffee, take a walk, step away for a bit *Leave it overnight if you can *Use speech mode to have it read out to youthis is a ripper and funny *Send it to a friendif it’s a kind of a big deal project Any others I’m missing?
18.01.2022 Starting the week like... I love writing blogs and web copy, two of my favourite things to do as a copywriter. But some motivation music is needed this morning!... Sorry, not sorry, if this song is now stuck in your head too Happy Monday!
16.01.2022 I love a brilliant piece of writing and this #blogpost is one of them. https://www.clevercopywritingschool.com/how-to-make-your-w/ My projects range from retaining walls to fitness apps to marketing magic.... You, the reader, are who we want to inform and engage. Penned by fellow The Clever Copywriting School member George Norris, it had me reading to the end. Intelligent, well-written tips in a fun tone. What’s not to enjoy. It was also a timely refresher of why I enjoy what I do. Have a read for yourself, and thanks for sharing George, you can find him here https://georgenorriscopywriter.com/
15.01.2022 Saturdays are for...planning your holiday destination when the travel bans are lifted. I know where I'm headed, and I cannot wait. Where would you go out of these 3?
12.01.2022 The simplicity of this got me. When we communicate effectively we cultivate a community that reciprocates support, inspiration and respect. As time moves on *ok get older* we start to realise how important communication is.... In business, relationships, family, yourself, everything! I'm practicing communicating boundaries, asking questions to ensure clarity and calling myself out on my own BS. It's refreshing. And your clients respect you and you respect them. And we grow and inspire together, which is the common goal right? Those who don't communicate well... they end up not being part of your community. And that's ok too. Happy Tuesday folks x
11.01.2022 You're at a party, network event, conference, shin dig. You're talking about what you do to 'earn a crust''. Your business. Your baby. Your blood sweat and tears. Do you hand them a business card? Does that card showcase what you do and how spectacularly you do it?... I vote a 'no'. In this digital age, my bet is you BOTH whip out your phones, like each other's Social Media pages, and scroll the feed. The proof is in your content. Great social media game is this generations business card. Your socials page can:- Show off your brand Attract new leads Educate your audience Increase your page reach Establish you as a leader Display your achievements Build trust and respect Make you accessible and human Who's got the time though right? You'd rather be in your genius, doing the do and being the be. Rather than stuffing your business socials to the back of the dusty drawer, drop me a line and let's make your brand proud.
09.01.2022 Happy birthday to us! That’s me and my biz! **Although the pic is of my son’s birthday, and you’ll read why at the end. 12 months ago I decided to back myself.... Freshly separated from a 20-year relationship, single parenting for 2 kids, one with complex disabilities and having to make the tough call to end my 15 year corporate career. I had zero clue what my next move was. As a teen I had wanted to be a writer even wrote for an Adelaide newspaper - but I mean, who gets paid to write? Right? Fast forward an amazing, enlightening, terrifying, confidence building, confidence crushing, challenge smashing, challenge procrastinating year. And that doesn’t even include COVID. I started with zero experience and qualifications. My learning came with the questions and problems I bumped into along the way. I sourced online courses, books, podcasts and the amazing Copy community and resources from the incredible @Kate Toon and @The Clever Copywriting School. In this year I’ve written:- TV ads Business awards Magazine Advertorials Blogs Grant submissions Websites Art piece descriptions Presentations Emails/Social posts My jargon has increased with concepts like information architecture, search engine optimization, lexicon, tone of voice and more The biggest learning has been my mindset. Here’s what I bumped into along the way. -If it lights you up, just start. Don’t overthink, just get in there and get dirty. Even my website is a reminder of how far I’ve come because it’s super embarrassing and I need to fix it it’s made me realise how much I’ve learnt. -You will have moments of brilliance, confidence, inspiration, clarity, fist bumping and calling your mates to say Guess what happened! Hang onto those moments. -There are days you won’t want to get out of bed and face it generally this is the exact moment you get an email or text from a client super happy with your work and singing your praises. Bless you people. -You will probably experience ‘Imposter Syndrome’, ‘Comparisonitis’, ‘WhatAmIDoingItis’ daily. Maybe all day, maybe for only a minute or two. Keep pushing through it. Breathe and chunk it down. -Your energy will ebb and flow Make peace with the fact that you won’t do and learn it all yesterday and sometimes you just need to rest and integrate. -Remember your why. My why’s are:- I want to be paid for doing something that lights my soul, not drains it I want to set a good example and create a good life for my children they are my everything I never want to live with regrets or playing small and avoiding what scares me Big gratitude to the clients who’ve trusted me with their business and supported me as I’ve supported them. They are absolutely priceless. It’s been a whopping 12 months and the next 12 are set to be even bigger. Most importantly, back yourself. Today and every day. Even when you make mistakes, or want to hide. Especially then.
08.01.2022 100% accurate. Keep showing up, keep making mistakes and keep moving forward. That's success. Happy Friday folks! ... Enjoy this beautiful long spring weekend.
08.01.2022 Businesses doing great things deserve recognition. It get me all cheerleadery (another new word). In April, I had the fun task of helping with just that for The Daisie Chain. Founder Emma Watts has built The Daisie Chain initiative from her beautiful relationship with her own grandmother, and now she's bringing connection and improved health to our older generations across Sydney.... Wishing Emma and The Daisie Chain all the best in receiving a grant, and the recognition, and thank you for the experience. www.connect-copy.com email at [email protected] Messenger 0408 805 709
06.01.2022 Today is National Family Business Day. A day to give a nod to small and large businesses that began with family. Some of our largest names, like Coopers, Haigh's Chocolates and Bakers Delight are just a few generational gems.... Let’s not forget our local electrician, newsagent and café owners. Two of my highest values are family and business. Most of my clients are family businesses, and they become like family to me. It’s thrilling to work on wins together and know it directly benefits community. In a year where supporting our local economy has increase in importance, and working together more critical than ever, here’s a few things we can do to support our family businesses: Follow and like them on Social Media Refer them Share their achievements Respect their time Pay full price Celebrate their success Supporting our family businesses grows our community, country and culture, let’s give them a shout out today.
06.01.2022 Just thought I’d pop by again and say hi! It’s been a while between posts. 2020, right? If your plans haven’t blown into the breeze a few times this year, are you even living?... I took some time off in May for my son’s surgery that went so wrong it turned into July. He’s great now though, but I’ve been playing catch up ever since. Admittedly, I became like a tradie, working on my clients’ socials and copy while mine fell into neglect! That niggling feeling that I’m not practising what I preach when I nag about consistency in algorithms and brand confidence kicked my social butt into gear, so here I am. Back in time for spring. So, hello again, I hope everyone is well. Drop a line and say hi, I’d love to hear what you’ve been up to!
