11.01.2022 2020 Official International Women's Day Youth Leadership Awards Congratulations on being nominated and being a finalist. It was a really tough decision and the ...judges found that each young woman was unique and very special in their own right. Many of these young women have excelled both at school and nominated category, some through great adversity. The finalists are young women from schools in Northern NSW, Gold Coast to Brisbane, daily making a difference to the lives of others in the school community and their local communities. The results of the 2020 Official International Women's Day Youth Leadership Awards judging are as follows By Category: 1. 2020 YOUTH LEADERSHIP COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARD HIGHLY COMMENDED - Jessica Morgan Cavendish Road State High School This young lady is a born leader but a leader to serve others. From the age of nine, getting her school on board to do a Samaritans Purse Shoe Box appeal where she coordinated classes and students to donate over 100 shoe boxes filled with gifts for student in a remote Vietnamese school. From this Jessica has lead numerous fundraising activities such as collecting over 24,000 cans for the local foodbank, clothing for homeless connect including in 2019 lead an extraordinary fundraiser and awareness campaign for the Fred Hollows Foundation; This project took an enormous amount of planning, overcoming barriers and running a successful Silly Socks day raising much needed funds for the foundation but also creating an awareness that will be forever life changing for many. This is one of the many legacies Jessica will leave as the event will be included in the school’s annual calendar. Congratulations Jessica on many long lasting legacies you have lead. 2020 YOUTH LEADERSHIP COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARD WINNER - Taleah Green Robina State High School An outgoing, passionate advocate that stands firm on her beliefs and committed to her causes. Taleah has been a concerned citizen dedicating countless hours to climate change activism. Bringing awareness and education to peers and community on climate change through various events and social media. Taleah has also introduced many initiatives to her school community such as a program to combat isolation and to create connections between the youth and elderly with students visiting a local nursing home, sharing stories and learning from each other. Another is the work she is doing with local schools collaborating together to lead change with Australian Youth Climate Coalition and Strike for Climate Change. Taleah is committed to inspiring others to be brave enough to stand up for what they believe in and what we do everyday matters! Taleah is leading the way in making a positive difference in her school but also in the wider community. Well done Taleah! 2. 2020 YOUTH LEADERSHIP IN THE QFES CADETS & THE DFR CADETS AWARD WINNER - Rauri Andersen Ormeau Woods State High School Rauri is a quiet achiever who strives to do her best in all aspects of life. Rauri is very passionate about advocating for mental health and ensuring that there is more understanding and acceptance of people experiencing mental health un-wellness. Sharing that one of her most significant successes was overcoming her own anxieties to represent Australia in New Zealand for the Cadet Games where she lead her team to success. Rauri represented South East Queensland in the National Adventure Training Awards and has also been successful in the Chief of Army Challenge in 2019. This inspiring young lady mentors young cadets and assists them to reach their goals and supports them through their fears and anxieties, encouraging perseverance and acknowledging their achievements. Rauri has many accolades to her name but recently received the Leadership Award at the 2019 Officers course and the Eleventh Army Cadet Unit Excellence in Leadership Award. Rauri has managed all of these whilst representing in womens rugby and volleyball and maintaining an impressive academic record. Whilst Rauri is extremely humble, Rauri is forging a path for many young people to aspire to. 3. 2020 YOUTH LEADERSHIP SOCIAL JUSTICE AWARD HIGHLY COMMENDED - Chloe Flack Trinity Lutheran College Chloe is a true young leader and advocate in the space of mental health. Drawing from her own personal experience she has mobilised her school community to introduce a program that looks at reducing isolation of students who may be suffering with a mental health condition and providing a space where they can connect with others in an easy and accessible way. She speaks passionately about reducing stigma in this area and provides simple solutions to start breaking down barriers for young people with mental health challenges, as well as preventive options to maintain mental wellbeing for the whole school community. Her dedication is shown through her well-considered project plan of her program which could be replicated for other schools, and her determination to continue to drive this initiative forward to keep working towards positive improvements for mental health and young people. 2020 YOUTH LEADERSHIP SOCIAL JUSTICE AWARD WINNER - Kaitlyn Emily Cox - Ormeau Woods State High School Kaitlyn’s passion and dedication to causes important to her is impressive. Some of her past achievements have included volunteering in Cambodia to build school infrastructures and volunteering through Rosie’s homeless charity. Her understanding and humble approach to supporting others and learning more about who they are as people, beyond the stereotype, is admirable. Recently she has established an initiative in her school called the Sustainable Environment Team. This is an environmental program, which includes collecting plastics to recycle as well as lids to donate to make prosthetic limbs, and Kaitlyn is looking to expand further to make more of a positive contributing for environmental causes. Kaitlyn is influential through the way she speaks and you can see how this has translated to being able to lead other young women in her approach to making the world a better place in many different ways. 4. 2020 YOUTH LEADERSHIP TRAINEE/APPRENTICESHIP AWARD WINNER - Jahkita Ann Kiloyne - Trinity Lutheran College Jahkita is an inspiring young women leading the way in the area of education, female sport, safety and rights of women and domestic violence and championing the successes of those from an indigenous cultural background. Jahkita has created her own opportunities through hard work, not letting barriers get in her way of achieving what she wanted to succeed in. She has won numerous awards including SEQ Training Awards Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander of the year Award, having undertaken over 5 training certificates whilst in school. Other sporting successes include making the top 40 in Australia for the First Nations rugby. One of her biggest achievements has been creating opportunities for women in rugby by establishing pathways here on the GC for other females to get involved, including a coach for children in a Tiny Tots’ team. She speaks admirably and gives examples of helping other female peers who have come from backgrounds within limited resources and sharing her experience and strategies with on how to improve your outcomes in life. 5. 2020 YOUTH LEADERSHIP IT INNOVATION AWARD WINNER - Caitlyn Camilleri Queensland Academies of Health Science Caitlyn demonstrates leadership in a gentle but effective way. She shows strong knowledge in how leadership is not just about your successes as an individual but how well you can work as a team and encourage others to be part of the success. An example of this is her recent participation in the Microsoft Corporation AI for Good Challenge where her team designed a watche which promotes social connection for children living with autism and assist others to have a better understanding of their emotions, with the overall aim to have people with autism have greater opportunity to integrate with whole of community. Caitlyn plans to take her skills in biotechnology and passion for equal education opportunities for women to work in developing nations to engage with community at a local level with the hope of fostering impactful change. Some of her experiences that have helped Caitlyn form this goal include recently travelling and spending time in India learning engaging with the Sikh community and learning about their Sewa program, as well as being a dedicated volunteer for the World Literacy Foundation and Smith Family’s Student2Student program mentoring program. 6. 2020 YOUTH LEADERSHIP VISUAL ARTS AWARD HIGHLY COMMENDED : Abby-Rose Galea - Emmanuel College Abby is a young artist with a heart for community and a head for business. She was at the forefront of a school group creating a 13 metre mural at the Genesis Cancer Hospital in Southport, as well as a personal 6 metre solo mural. Abby has started putting her original artworks up on Instagram, selling paintings and cards. She’s looking at a career in interior, fashion or graphic design. 2020 Youth Leadership VISUAL ARTS AWARD WINNER : Isabelle Anderson-Schmidt - A.B Paterson College This young artist is not only a talented creator, but is taking her art into the wider community, using her vision and skill, as platforms for change. Isabelle has illustrated a children’s book addressing the very real subject of domestic violence, using cute cats and dogs to explain a very difficult situation, on a level they can understand. Her message is one of hope and help, that can touch every child affected. The book entitled Dog in the Smog is being published and will soon be going into Gold Coast school libraries and is planned for wider distribution. 7. 2020 YOUTH LEADERSHIP IN THE PERFORMING ARTS AWARD Highly Commended- Sarah Gee - Southport State High School School Captain Set up Salvation Army Charity within her school/fundraiser Journalism, humble and spoke well. Genuine 2020 YOUTH LEADERSHIP IN THE PERFORMING ARTS AWARD Winner - Leah Humbert - All Saints Anglican School Strong actor All rounder, Singer, Dancer, Actor Education in Poverty through Unisef Confident 8. IWD YOUTH LEADERSHIP IN ACADEMICS AND THE SCHOOL COMMUNITY AWARD 2020 HIGHLY COMMENDED - Maddison Anstiss - Merrimac State High School Maddison is already proving herself a strong leader. She’s an outstanding role model at school academically, and Leads the way in community service. Maddison initiated and organises the school’s multi cultural night which brings all races together for an evening of dance, food, and traditions. The wider community joining in, building better understanding across the board. She was awarded the Premier’s Anzac prize, was part of the Gold Coast junior council, But most importantly is committed to building relationships across the grades. YOUTH LEADERSHIP IN ACADEMICS AND THE SCHOOL COMMUNITY AWARD 2020 WINNER - Jessica Wood - All Saints Anglican School Jessica is a true leader academically and in her school community. She has been honoured with the Academic awards from year 7 to date. Jessica is a champion debater , appointed her school’s business ambassador, running an entrepreneurial club. She has a junior school, reading mentor program. Outside of school, Jessica has her own music studio teaching 21 students to play piano, flute and sax.. including 2 boys with ADHD who are coming ahead in leaps and bounds. She’s also the youngest assistant conductor of the Gold Coast Hinterland band. She’s also a finalist in the Miss Diamond charity pageant raising funds For Nordoff Robbins which uses music to help those with disabilities. Also she’s developing a Fashion APP which compares all sizes for Easy comparison on line. 9. 2020 YOUTH LEADERSHIP SPORTS AWARD CO WINNERS ELLIE BEER MARYMOUNT COLLEGE & MOMO SUGIYAMA ALL SAINTS ANGLICAN SCHOOL ELLIE BEER - MARYMOUNT COLLEGE Marymount’s Sports Co-Captain & Sportswoman of the Year, Ellie is an extraordinary athlete and an exceptional young woman. She has a genuine love of life and the capacity to set future goals, making her a role model for many young students. Through her many achievements to date in Athletics, Surf Life Saving and Oz Tag, Ellie continues to show humility and graciousness. She is a 400 metre runner who had a breakthrough year in 2019 which saw her represent Australia in the Open Womens 4 x 400 relay team at the IAAF World Relay Championships in Japan and then later at the World Athletic Championships in Daha. At 16 she was the youngest Australian competitor ever to compete at a World Championships. Ellie’s trademark is the wearing of long socks while competing. Ellie is currently in training to achieve a qualifying time in the 400 & 200 for the 2020 World Junior U/20 Athletics Championships in Kenya, Nairobi in July. Ellie has also been selected in the Australian Youth Lifesaving squad for the 2020 World Surf Lifesaving Championships in July. Her goal is to be involved in sport for the rest of her life she wants to compete for Australia at the Olympics and work one day in the sports development/management Industry. MOMO SUGIYAMA - ALL SAINTS ANGLICAN SCHOOL All Saints Anglican School Senior School House captain, Momo, has achieved a lot in her 17 years from being a leader in her school, achieving academically to her success on the golf course. She is committed to everything she takes on and her future aspirations to attend college in USA next year and play on the LPGA circuit is an inspiration to all. She is currently playing on a handicap of plus .3. She has represented her school at swimming, running, aquathon and is the school age swimming champion. Currently her main focus is on golf as she will pursue this sport as her career. 2019 was also a breakthrough year for Momo winning both the South Australian Junior Masters and the Alice Springs Junior Cup. She was chosen one of six members of the 2019 Australian Merit Team at the conclusion of the 2018 School Sport Golf National Championship. Her highlight was finishing runner-up in the 2019 12th Annual FCG International Championship held in San Diego, USA. Momo lost this championship by one stroke finishing on 2 under at the famous Singing Hills Golf Club. This amazing achievement gained her qualification in the IMG Junior World Championships held in San Francisco, USA. Momo finished in 34th place an amazing achievement for this All Saints student. These results prove she has the ability to become a professional golfer on the LPGA Tour following 4 years at a USA University.
