25.01.2022 Lets use reading science to close our literacy gap and open new worlds for our emerging readers. #UntilAllKidsCanRead

25.01.2022 A friend shared this image yesterday and it really resonated with me, and just now I have read this article which explains it all so well! If youve ever been concerned about labels then its definitely worth reading! https://positivespecialneedsparenting.com/labels-dont-defi/

23.01.2022 Why early intervention is so important Thank you, Mrs. Speechie P, for this graphic.

20.01.2022 A.D.H.D Take my hand and come with me, I want to teach you about ADHD. I need you to know, I want to explain, I have a very different brain.... Sights, sounds, and thoughts collide. What to do first? I cant decide. Please understand Im not to blame, I just cant process things the same. Take my hand and walk with me, Let me show you about ADHD. I try to behave, I want to be good, But I sometimes forget to do as I should. Walk with me and wear my shoes, Youll see its not the way Id choose. I do know what Im supposed to do, But my brain is slow getting the message through. Take my hand and talk with me, I want to tell you about ADHD. I rarely think before I talk, I often run when I should walk. Its hard to get my school work done, My thoughts are outside having fun. I never know just where to start, I think with my feelings and see with my heart. Take my hand and stand by me, I need you to know about ADHD. Its hard to explain but I want you to know, I cant help letting my feelings show. Sometimes Im angry, jealous, or sad. I feel overwhelmed, frustrated, and mad. I cant concentrate and I lose all my stuff. I try really hard but its never enough. Take my hand and learn with me, We need to know more about ADHD. I worry a lot about getting things wrong, Everything I do takes twice as long. Everyday is exhausting for me... Looking through the fog of ADHD. Im often so misunderstood, I would change in a heartbeat if I could. Take my hand and listen to me, I want to share a secret about ADHD. I want you to know there is more to me. Im not defined by it, you see. Im sensitive, kind and lots of fun. Im blamed for things I havent done. Im the loyalist friend youll ever know, I just need a chance to let it show. Take my hand and look at me, Just forget about the ADHD. I have real feelings just like you. The love in my heart is just as true. I may have a brain that can never rest, But please understand Im trying my best. I want you to know, I need you to see, Im more than the label, I am still me!!!! Author Unknown *Copy and paste this as your status if u know someone with A.D.H.D or know the struggle yourself. When people tell you its an excuse just read them this!

14.01.2022 Spelling October is dyslexia awareness month. Many people think of dyslexia as a reading problem. But it impacts spelling far more than reading.... #dyslexia #dyslexiaawareness

14.01.2022 So many people think that when those of us with a learning difference use assistive tech, that we are cheating in some way. Using assistive tech is NOT cheating...! Assistive tech is just a tool we use to help level the playing field. It just helps us to access written material in a different way, similar to how glasses would help somebody with vision problems to see. Assistive tech is not a replacement for early identification and intervention but it does help us to navigate information in a different way because our brains aren’t wired to access it in the traditional way. So remember, using assistive tech is NOT cheating! #leveltheplayingfield #dyslexia #assistivetech #technology #assistivetechnology #assistivetechisnotcheating #levelthefield

10.01.2022 Executive function remains one of the most reliable predictors of success in academicsand in life. Heres the research on what it is, and how to cultivate it.

10.01.2022 Myth: They just need to work harder. Fact: Children with dyslexia work harder than everyone else. Thank you, Dyslexia pqbd, for this graphic.

08.01.2022 Why cant some students seem to crack the code? To memorize sight words? To build fluency? Youve tried every multisensory activity, game, app, and song unde...r the sun.... ...and nothing seems to work! I (Dr. Marnie Ginsberg) faced the same problem with 2 of my failing 6th grade students who couldnt even read Dr. Seuss. After much searching and trial and error, I discovered simple, research-based activities that accelerated these 2 boys over 3 YEARS GROWTH.... ...in just a matter of months. The game that kicked off all their improvements--Switch It--shows beginning and struggling readers of all ages SO many core principles about reading... the concept of the alphabetic principle, letter-sound knowledge, phoneme segmentation, phoneme manipulation (the hardest level of PA), early decoding, and early spelling. Not only does this simple 5-minute Switch It decoding hack help transform non-readers into readers rapidly... ...they also LOVE playing the game! Discover how easily you can boost your students over the hurdles that are blocking them, by downloading our COMPLEMENTARY Switch It Guide. Ready to transform frustration into fruitful reading? 05.01.2022 Love that Henry Winkler is such an awesome advocate for dyslexic kids One out of five kids has some sort of learning challenge. That's a big population to j...ust leave behind. Teachers have this herculean task of having to teach the same amount of information in the same amount of time to the fastest child and [to] the one who learns the slowest. Somebody is going to fall through the cracks. Somebody is getting short-shrifted. - Henry Winkler, actor, dyslexic, author, advocate, legend! #dyslexia #dyslexiaawareness #advocate #untileveryonecanread #icon #henrywinkler #thefonz

03.01.2022 You know that a-ha momentwhen a kid finally gets something or comes up with a brilliant idea of their own? Its priceless.

01.01.2022 I see so many worried parents/carers on ADHD and Dyslexia groups asking the same questions, and concerned about the same issues; that reflect my very own though...ts last year. Should I get my child assessed? My family say he is too young? Her teacher said I should wait until she is older. My partner said he will grow out of it. Being a parent we are always so torn about doing the right thing for our children and not making mistakes, that sometimes we just really struggle to make these decisions, and put them off thinking things will improve. I always say the same thing; listen to your heart. You know your child best. Dont be put off by others. People can be so hung up on labelling a child. Its not labelling ; They are still the same child they were before an assessment. The aim of the assessment process is to work out the childs areas of weakness AND strengths; to evaluate what will help your child to thrive. The diagnosis then enables you to pursue what its needed for your child; to advocate for them. Heidi was age 6 when she received her diagnosis of Dyslexia , and age 7 when she was given her diagnosis of co morbid ADHD. She wasnt too young. She was a perfect candidate. She had been educated for 2 full years prior , and not thrived and developed like her peer group; but she wasnt too old that her self esteem and confidence had taken a battering. Getting a diagnosis for Heidi was the best thing we ever could have done. It has helped Heidi to understand herself; her strengths , her weaknesses , and why she behaves and feels in a certain way. It has enabled me to show Heidi how many wonderful people are out there similar to her , that lead successful and inspirational lives. It has enabled us to access additional support and provisions in school such as extra time in tests, extra support, ability to move around in class whenever she needs to. It has helped us as parents to parent her better and to understand her needs. It has allowed me the opportunity to educate Heidi as she grows up on how to navigate friendships , relationships etc taking into account her personality traits. Hopefully it will help reduce the risk of mental health difficulties such as anxiety, depression , self harm etc if we have taught her to communicate and advocate more effectively. It has given us this wonderful opportunity to educate and empower others, challenge stigma, and show the world how awesome Neurodiversity is !
