25.01.2022 PLEASE READ In preparation for our opening tomorrow I thought it was timely for a reminder of our studio policies & procedures regarding COVID 19. Please use the hand sanitiser upon entry & exit to the Raymond Laurie Sports Centre, they have a massive bottle you cant miss it. Gloves are available in the studio should you wish to wear them Please ensure you wear socks & bring a towel to cover the equipment (put both of these things in your car so you dont forget but rem...ember to wash them regularly ) Please arrive in your active wear as the shower / changing rooms are closed, dont panic the toilets are still open, there is nothing worse then trying to focus on Pilates with a full bladder Those of you who like to arrive early for class the RLSC operate a get in, do your class & get out policy. Please do not arrive more than 5 minutes prior to your class & please exit the facility promptly. If you do arrive early please wait in your car. 25.01.2022 Our FB community has grown considerably since I last introduced myself which is exciting! Thanks for being part of our Pilates community. In case you don’t know I’m Gemma lover of Pilates, Gin & tonic & animals. I am married to a pretty cool cat who supports my wild ideas including owning a Pilates studio, thanks Brad & I have two fur children Meowington (cat in case unsure) & Lennox (dog who I wanted to call Barclay but wasn’t allowed ). Personality wise I’ve been told ofte...n that I am quirky so it must be true Pilates is the only form of exercise I truly enjoy, although I did take up netball recently & I didn’t mind that until I broke my foot playing, in hindsight should have stuck with Pilates. I love how Pilates challenges the mind & body & offers lots of variety to keep both engaged. 23.01.2022 **Insert facepalm** I get it, there are lots of similarities between Yoga & Pilates after all Joseph Pilates was inspired by Yoga when creating his exercise method. The differences might appear subtle but they are definitely different. I like to think of yoga as a lifestyle choice as well as an exercise method with its focus on spirituality as well as exercising the mind and body. Pilates is also a mind body exercise with a focus on breath, core strength, spinal health & supp...orts neuroplasticity. 19.01.2022 Pilates Principle 4. Precision. Not to be confusion with perfection. Take the exercise below single leg stretch where we create a bow & arrow shape with the legs, if we perform this exercise without precision we end up peddling the air like obey coyote from the Looney Tunes. So rather than focusing on moving at speed or achieving a high number of repetitions focus on moving with precision to achieve maximum benefits from the exercise being performed.

What a year it’s been starting with humble beginnings in our garage studio to a full home studio to commercial digs at the Raymond Laurie Sports Centre. We have survived COVID 19, a flood & a fractured foot, with each huddle overcome this year it makes me quietly confident we will be around for many years to come. With all the ups & downs the one constant has been your support & unwavering love of Pilates which allows me to keep my dream a reality. 16.01.2022 We have reached our final Pilates principle, centering. To effectively control your body, you must have a starting place & that is the centre of your body referred to as the powerhouse or core. The Pilates repertoire initiates at our centre & flows out to the limbs. Centering also refers to the ability to calm the mind, body & spirit. How often have you come to the studio, racing in from work or a stressful day & left feeling lighter & calmer. I know I have & it was that sense of calm that kept me going back to Pilates time & time again.

14.01.2022 Fall in love with Mat Pilates again. With Reformer taking the spotlight for a few years, Mat Pilates has gone out of vogue which I think is a crying shame. Don’t get me wrong I love all forms of Pilates equally but I do think there is something special about going back to where it all began & getting back on the Mat. A large number of the mat exercises translate on to the Reformer, allowing you to master the exercises without worrying about the springs, pulley’s or movement o...f the carriage. The beauty of Mat Pilates is it doesn’t allow room to hide, if you get tired on the reformer or move without control the springs do the work for you. 13.01.2022 If you come to the studio you know I love a good booty sequence with bridging being one of my go to exercises. Why is this important? Because an increasing number of us have dormant bottom syndrome (yes, it’s a thing) as we spend more time sitting on our bottoms rather than using them, they have become little more than a cushion. Our glute muscles that make up our bottom are hip extensors designed to support us with sitting to standing, walking & climbing stairs they provide ...power, balance & stability to the body. When our glute muscles are weak other muscles step up & take the slack which can result in low back pain, hip or knee pain as they are now doing the job that they weren’t designed to do. 12.01.2022 I have a confession to make, it took me over a year to pluck up the courage to attend my first Reformer class I was scared I would embarrass myself; I would go head over heels & be completely uncoordinated. When I moved to Melbourne a colleague of mine over several conversations gave me enough confidence to give it ago. I booked my classes turned up early, was shown how to use the reformer & when the class started & the instructor said to extend your legs for the carriage to ...go back, Im pretty sure I looked at her eyes wide in horror, I was definitely uncoordinated but as the class went on I fell in love, Pilates challenged my mind & body, my muscles were sore & I left walking on cloud 9. I had the feel-good factor from stepping outside my comfort zone & from moving my body. My point? I get that the reformer can be intimidating, I have been there, experienced the nerves & apprehension & I have also experienced the sense of achievement from stepping out of my comfort zone. 11.01.2022 Ok, so I am moving my left arm to the celling, what shall I have for dinner? Oh wait is my arm meant to be going out to the side or was it the celling? Concentration is another one of my favourite principles & one of the many reasons I love Pilates. Pilates requires your complete concentration to achieve the maximum value from an exercise especially when we throw in exercises requiring coordination. I find that concentrating on each exercise provides a form of mindfulness giving me space from the internal chatter & creating space to focus on me. 09.01.2022 It puts a smile on my dial that so many of you would like to enjoy our classes, what turns that smile upside down is no shows, our group classes are scheduled at peak workout times & are often waitlisted with up to 3 clients waiting for a spot. This means that when you no show a fellow Pilates lover misses out. In the last month we had 278 bookings & 45 no shows which is equal to 9 classes. If you are someone that likes to schedule your classes in advance please make sure you check & read the reminders, the biggest lie we tell ourselves is I will remember that, its certainly true in my case. 08.01.2022 Pilates principle 5 Flow. The art of graceful movement. Now I often joke in class that not all Pilates movements are graceful for example getting up from lying on the Pilates box but with practice we can learn to move with ease, fluidity & grace. Before discovering Pilates, I was very clumsy my parents told me I moved with the grace of an elephant & I was always covered in bruises from walking into things but with consistent practice I like to think I move less like an elephant these days & I am definitely less clumsy! So why not flow right into the studio & learn to move with ease fluidity & grace.

07.01.2022 #throwbackthursday Here I am just hanging out at Esprit Pilates studio in Sydney on the trapeze table which I am super excited to share will be arriving in the studio early next year. The trapeze table is a versatile piece of equipment that offers a full body workout using springs, push through bar & fluffy straps. I feel very fortunate to have been able to support Brent through her pregnancy & after birth with a combination of group classes, private sessions & mums & bubs Pilates & during our sessions if I’m lucky I get cuddles & a smile from Zoey below is a lovely review Brent shared about her experience in the studio whilst pregnant. I joined Connect Pilates classes on their open day in Yamba in October 2019. Being 13 weeks... pregnant at the time, I was unsure about how far into my pregnancy I would be able to continue reformer classes and whether exercises could be modified to meet the needs of my changing bod. Well, I needn’t have worried Gemma has been an absolute star! She has ensured that all exercises are preg friendly, while supporting my increasing strength and flexibility. Maximum of 4 clients per group class allowing greater than 4sqm between clients No equipment is shared in group classes All equipment is cleaned after class with hospital grade wipes & disinfectant spray. High touch areas frequently cleaned Split system has been temporarily retired & door / windows open to allow air flow through the studio... Towels & socks are essential, wearing a jumper / long sleeve top is recommended (to keep warm) Hand sanitiser station available, please ensure you sanitise your hands before class Gloves are available should you wish to wear them If you are feeling unwell even with mild symptoms, I do ask that you cancel your class & do not return until you are in full health (observing our 12 hour cancelation policy) Thank you for your continued support in ensuring these standards are maintained.
