15.01.2022 PWDA has been reading in detail the Federal Governments response to the Tune Review, released on Friday. We share many of our communitys concerns about the pr...oposed across-the-board introduction of independent assessors for everyone with an NDIS plan. This goes well beyond the scope of the small pilot trailing the use of functional assessments that was intended to move away from a reliance on medical assessments and give people with disability better access to the NDIS by covering the costs of gathering evidence, and getting reports. We are going to be in touch with the NDIS and Minister Robert to find out more about this, and let them know how worrying a step this is for people with disability. We will update as soon as we know more. If you are concerned about the independent assessment, please let us know in the comments. You can also contact Minister Robert here: https://ministers.dss.gov.au/stuart-robert/contact You can read more about the proposal on the NDIS website: https://www.ndis.gov.au/participants/independent-assessments [Image description: Hand holding a highlighter pen, ticking boxes. 14.01.2022 TEACHING VALUES of BEING HUMAN. Chapter 5: Nurturing emotional awareness, intelligence and resilience. https://teachingvaluesofbeinghuman.com.au/ BIG feelings f...eel like everything is at stake. The truth is that all feelings come and go. An ideal way to illustrate this is to use a bubble blowing kit with students as its a perfect metaphor to show that feelings are as transient as bubbles. Together, blow a bubble and assign a feeling to it. And, if you are thinking that this is an activity tailored for littlies, you couldnt be more wrong. Every year too many adolescents impulsively harm themselves, or take their lives because they have not learnt to deal with the trickiest of feelings around disappointment, rejection, shame and loss. They have not absorbed one vital fact. That is, feelings come and go. Also teach The 24-hour rule - wait 24 hours before acting on any feeling that feels tricky, upsetting or disastrous. By deliberately pre-planning to not act on a problem for 24 hours we instil the notion of buying time so our brains to reset and reconsider. During this time we talk to one or two trusted people to compare their thinking with our own. Often, within 24 hours, weve moved past the initial emotional high-point and have calmed enough to make a much wiser decision. These practices are literally lifesaving. Make them frequent conversations and events for every young person!
