Australian Taxation Office says it's receiving reports of email scams about JobKeeper and backing business investment claims. "The fake emails say we're investigating your claims. The image below is one example of an email scam currently circulating. If you get this email DO NOT provide the information requested. Delete it straight away. If you receive a message from the ATO asking for your personal information, you can call them on 1800 008 540 to make sure it's legitimate. 19.01.2022 ATO Update: Cash-flow Boost The ATO is concerned that some businesses who have received the $20,000 to $100,000 cash-flow boost have made either an honest mistake or undertaken a fraudulent arrangement to increase the amount they receive. Businesses that made sudden or unexpected changes to PAYG withholding amounts to increase their entitlement to the cash-flow boost are now being contacted by the ATO.

18.01.2022 JobKeeper Payment Update: Are you prepared for a possible JobKeeper audit? While the ATO has committed to taking an understanding and sympathetic approach to JobKeeper compliance, it has made it clear it will conduct compliance and audit activities to ensure the JobKeeper Payment is passed on to employees, as well as to swiftly and effectively address attempted fraud and any other abuse of the scheme.... Tracking JobKeeper payments through Single Touch Payroll (STP) is one of the main ways the ATO will ensure employers are compliant. In addition to a range of data-matching tools, STP will allow the ATO to identify when an employer has made over or underpayments, incorrectly declared how many employees they are applying for, or when they have not correctly nominated employees. It’s therefore essential for every business to double-check its eligibility for JobKeeper, as well as for its employees. It’s also critical for businesses to maintain documentation and records substantiating information they provided to the ATO in their JobKeeper applications, and to have these documents available in the event of an audit by the ATO.

08.01.2022 SCAM ALERT Scammers have set up a clone of the myGov website to trick you into sharing your login and bank account details, Stay Smart Online says. The scam starts with a phishing email that looks like it is from Medicare, asking you to update your Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT) details, so you can start receiving payments for Medicare benefits and claims. If you click on the link in the email you are taken a replica of the real myGov website. You’ll note the URL include...s ‘.net’ instead of ‘.gov.au’, which is an indication the website is not a legitimate Australian Government domain! If you input your login details you are directed to also enter your secret security question and answer, before you’re taken to the fake Medicare website to input your bank account details. These emails and web pages feature myGov and Medicare design and branding, making them appear legitimate. Remember, clicking on the link and sharing your details gives these scammers access to your personal information, which they then use to steal your money and identity!
