21.01.2022 In 2016, I was a judge of some classes at the Dublin, Ireland show, and one class was called something like "Working Hunt Teams for Connemaras." There were thre...e teams of 4 riders, Ireland, France, and Great Britain, Here is how it worked: First, a rider from one team would do a simple dressage test right there in the main ring, maybe 5 or 6 movements, that I would score. Then the same rider would jump a stadium round of maybe 8 or 9 jumps, scored by knockdowns or refusals, just like normal show jumping. Then, at the far end of the big arena, there was a cross country section, with a bank and a ditch, and 8 or 9 jumping efforts, again, scored like normal cross country, refusals and time. That would give that rider a score. Then would come the next rider from another country, then a rider from the third country, and so on, until all 12 riders had done all three phases. I can't remember if there was a drop score, but the team with the lowest overall score won, and so on. This requires a big field, but it could be a nice class to copy at American shows, possibly within a breed, or from different stables, different pony clubs, whatever---

18.01.2022 How the Showcase started
15.01.2022 Now for some Connies. CONNEMARAS - THE PONY FOR EVERYBODY These wonderful ponies originated in Galway, Ireland, tough, sound and with excellent temperaments. W...e have featured John Brennan and Tommy O'Brien's ponies in Ireland, where they stand in their natural environment. We have also featured some of the written articles from Rider, explaining our history of this breed in Australia. When Veterinary Surgeon Dr. Fred Wiltshire, his wife Breda and two children, Kenneth and Anne (later to marry Guy Creighton) migrated from Europe in 1963 they brought with them the first Connemara ponies to come to Australia. The stallion was Island King (by Carna Bobby). They also brought two mares and they named the stud Connemara Park. It was set up in Narre Warren, Victoria. Today, sadly, the whole area is totally in the centre of suburbia. There was no breed society when they came and Island King was registered as an Australian Pony . They were not to exceed 14.2 and could come in almost any colour. Crossed with other breeds, especially thoroughbreds, they produced wonderful mounts that excelled in everything from eventing, showjumping, hunting, pony club, etc. etc. Two of the earliest champions were Kildare (who won Melbourne Novice three-day-event with Kenneth Wiltshire) and Blue Isle (show jumper with Marianne Gilchrist and later a hunter with Mr. Eric Rundle). Sadly Island King was put down at the age of 23. Island King's first foal was Connemara Park Kenneth who was exported to stand in Western Australia. Many studs followed, Barwidgee Stud in the Victoria's Western District owned by the Kelly family produced many versatile champions. In 1972, Miss Anne Hammond from Millfields Stud, Newmarket, near Cambridge came out to judge and instruct. She was instrumental in selling a lot of good ponies from the U.K. to people in this country. Today, many children's ponies going around faithfully with their often young riders, will probably have Island King somewhere in their pedigree. 14.01.2022 The Connemara pony Showcase will not be going ahead as planned this year. Please mark 19/20 September 2020 on your calendar instead. Hope to see you all there
14.01.2022 The Connemara pony is Ireland’s only native breed. Famous for being hardy and sure-footed the pony evolved in the western part of County Galway, known as Connem...ara. This area of rough terrain, rocky landscape and wet harsh climate helped develop a breed that is strong, sturdy, resilient and adaptable. Breed criteria demands that ponies are between 128 to 148 cm high at the withers; be a compact, well-balanced riding type with good depth and substance, good heart room and standing on short legs with a well-developed knee and short cannon bone. Movement must be free without undue knee action, active and covering ground. Colour can be grey, black, bay, dun with occasional roan and chestnut, palomino and dark-eyed cream. Today, this hardy and versatile pony is bred worldwide in Ireland and the United Kingdom, on the European continent, in the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa.
