25.01.2022 Big Band Karaoke Vocalist Spotlight: Riley Fernandes & Alex Norris Riley Fernandes is a recent graduate of Narrabundah College where she was a vocalist for the school's Jazz band. A keen pursuer of the performing arts, if she's not on stage - or pretending to be - you'll likely spot her with a camera in her hands. Riley hopes to be a Documentary Filmmaker in the future and loves to get in the practice. Alex Norris moved to Canberra for University in 2010 and now works at th...e Attorney-General’s Department. Norris’s last turn on stage was playing Reno Sweeney in the musical Anything Goes in 2012 for which she was nominated Best Actress in a Musical in the Canberra Area Theatre Awards. Norris is a passionate swing dancer with Canberra’s Swing Katz and Jumptown Swing, and is thrilled to be combining her loves of singing and swing music. Norris is particularly chuffed to be singing L.O.V.E., as this was the first song she ever sang at karaoke when she went to Japan on a school trip in 2005. 25.01.2022 Big Band Karaoke Vocalist Spotlight: Rachael Eddowes & Vanessa Hooley - Rachael is proud to be a Canberra vocalist, having sung in many different venues across the capital. She has sung extensively with Canberra Choral Society, including performances of Handel operas Saul, Theodora, and Hercules. Last year she performed in the chorus of The Merry Widow of Bluegum Creek, and is excited to be working with Queanbeyan Players again this year in their production of South Pacific. ...Rachael is thrilled to be singing with Connexion Big Band - bringing back memories of playing trombone as a teenager in a band called the Funky Chickens! Vanessa Hooley has sung all her life, apparently even before she could talk! She specialises in classical voice, but loves a vast array of genres. She has been in various choirs including Canberra Youth Music, The Canberra Choral Society and Vocal Fry, and The Canberra Bach Ensemble. In 2011, she recorded her first album, Ten Thousand Miles, and is currently planning a second. She is in her second year of an online Bachelor of Music through The University of New England, and is completing the practical vocal studies under Tobias Cole at The ANU School of Music. In 2016, Vanessa had a minor solo role alongside Emma Griffiths in Handel in the Theatre's debut opera The Vow, and was showcased in a Canberra Art Song masterclass by Andrea Katz. Vanessa is excited to participate in the big band scene, and for 2017 is planning a few recording projects, whilst juggling her textile business, Tree of Promise. 25.01.2022 Big Band Karaoke Vocalist Spotlight: Sophie Edwards & Phillip Rios - At only age 17 Sophie Edwards is already an accomplished musician and an up-and-coming jazz vocalist. Edwards is currently enrolled at the ANU School of Music, where she is studying a Bachelor of Performance in Jazz. Edward’s has sung with Joe Farnsworth’s Prime-Time Quartet, and recently had an original jazz composition performed for the ACTMEN Concert, which showcases the best original work of ACT year 12 ...Music Students. Phillip Rios has been a bass & tenor tromboninst for 10 years. A native Texan (USA), he studied briefly at the University of North Texas before enlisting in the US Marines. His work has taken him from Monterey, CA to Augusta, GA, where he currently resides. He is participating in a work exchange program and has been in Canberra for the past six months. 25.01.2022 Big Band Karaoke Vocalist Spotlight: Jono Windsor & Cathrine Proctor - Jono Windsor, born in Tassie, began playing trumpet at the age of 8, playing in several community and school bands throughout his youth, before taking a 10-year performance hiatus in 2005 due to university studies. Windsor discovered his singing talent in in 2015 through musical theatre where he made his stage debut in ‘My Fair Lady’, and was subsequently part of the cast for ‘The Music Man’, ‘The Merry... Widow’ and ‘South Pacific’. Windsor plays trumpet with our big band colleagues ‘In Full Swing’. Aside from performing, Windsor is also one of Canberra’s leading long-distance runners - and could possibly lay claim to be Australia's fastest singer! Catherine Proctor found her love of music at an early age when she began piano lessons and became an enthusiastic member of her school choir. Her love of Jazz music was nurtured through college and the Jazz course at the ANU School of Music graduating in 2012 with a double degree in Music & Arts (English & Psychology). Proctor currently works at the Australian Bureau of Statistics, offers vocal coaching at Bellchambers Music School and leads her own 5-piece jazz band, 5th Avenue. She is also an avid Swing dancer and performs with the Jumptown Swing Dance troupe. The list of artists he has performed or composed for includes music royalty - Kate Cebrano, Vince Jones, the One O'Clock Lab Band (USA), Maria Schneider (USA), James Morrison, and many more. His most recent album, 'The Last Sanctuary' features the cream of the Australian jazz musician pool in his jazz orchestra and has received rave reviews i...nternationally. ConneXion Big Band, conducted by Sally Greenaway, shares James Mustafa's commitment to supporting and fostering new Australian big band repertoire and we’re excited to be presenting James Mustafa’s jazz orchestra work ‘Paper Boats’ - a piece that features on James' award-winning and highly acclaimed album - at this concert. James Mustafa will feature with the band on both trumpet and trombone, as guest soloist and composer. This, in combination with showcasing 12 talented Canberra-region vocalists and dancing from the Canberra Swing Katz, will prove to be an outstanding and memorable concert! ConneXion Big Band, with special guest artist award-winning brass-specialist James Mustafa (MELB), will be showcasing 12 vocalists from the Canberra region. Imagine singing with a 20-piece big band backing you as you recreate the hits of Ella Fitzgerald and Frank Sinatra Earlier this year ConneXion Big Band asked for expressions of interest from vocalists... from the Canberra region to take part in a unique experience to sing a classic jazz big band hit with us. We had an overwhelmingly positive response and 12 vocalists were chosen this concert is showcasing the fruits of this experience. ConneXion Big Band is committed to supporting new Australian repertoire and we’re excited to also be presenting James Mustafa’s jazz orchestra work ‘Paper Boats’ at this concert. James Mustafa is one of Australia's leading jazz artists. 09.01.2022 Big Band Karaoke Vocalist Spotlight: Judith Colquhoun & Matthew Ricketts - Singing with a jazz band, let alone a big band, has been a wish of Judith Colquhoun’s since she was in her early teens. This was driven along after a couple of meetings with Don Burrows and James Morrison (two jazz heroes). Colquhoun has been performing on stages in Canberra and Queanbeyan for well of 20 years now singing a wide variety of styles. She has now taken on the role of Director for Queanbeya...n Players and about to direct Guys and Dolls. Colquhoun is really delighted to tick another singing ambition off her list. Hailing from Young (NSW), Matt Ricketts is in-demand as a trombonist in Canberra’s music scene, playing with numerous community ensembles, from big bands to concert bands to orchestras and rubbing shoulders with the best professional musicians in the scene. He is stepping out from the bandstand to debut his singing skills with ‘Minnie the Moocher’ one of the greatest Cab Calloway hits of all time. 09.01.2022 Big Band Karaoke Vocalist Spotlight: Andrew Finegan & Jessica Maree Horton - Andrew Finegan is a newcomer to Canberra, having lived and worked overseas for the past few years. He is a keen swing dancer and he decided that he would definitely like to sing with Connexion after recently seeing them perform at a swing dance ball. He has also performed shows at the Adelaide and Sydney Fringe and Melbourne International Comedy Festival. When he's not singing or dancing, he is a lib...rarian, where he tries to keep the noise down. Jessica Maree is an up and coming Australia musician. Her primary studies have been at the Music Industry Centre under the talents of Eric Ajaye where she received her Advanced Diploma in Music Performance. She is now undertaking her second year of study at the Australian National University School of Music to complete her Bachelor Degree in Music. She loves to perform any chance she can - from intimate acoustic gigs or on stage in musicals. Jessica Maree truly shines when performing in a band setting, belting out ballads and jazz classics.
