25.01.2022 What is Wellness? Wellness is a choice a decision you make toward optimal health. ... Wellness is a way of life a lifestyle you design to achieve your highest potential for wellbeing. Wellbeing is a process a developing awareness that there is no endpoint, but that health and happiness are possible in each moment, here and there. Wellness is a balanced channelling of energy energy received from the environment, transformed within you, and returned to affect the world around you. Wellness is the integration of the body, mind and spirit the appreciation that everything you do, think and feel, and believe has an impact on your state of health and the health of the world. Wellness is the loving acceptance of yourself. (John W. Travis, MD)

25.01.2022 Magnesium - Could your intake be deficient? Do you feel tired, have difficulty sleeping, a high blood pressure or are anxious? Your body might be low in magnesium, a vital mineral that is involved in more than 300 biochemical reactions in the body. Low magnesium levels have been linked to various chronic diseases including cardiovascular disease, diabetes and osteoporosis. In 2015 the ABS published that in 2011/12 one in three people aged 2 years and older did not meet thei...r required intake of magnesium. With our soils being deficient in many nutrients including magnesium, it is not surprising that we might not be getting enough of this essential nutrient. Other common symptoms of magnesium deficiency include migraines, poor concentration, muscular cramps, tingling and numbness in the extremities, heart arrhythmia, premenstrual syndrome and menstrual cramps. Low magnesium levels in the body can be due to a diet high in fatty foods and sugar and low in magnesium-rich foods; poor absorption (often due to gastrointestinal issues) and increased magnesium excretion as a result of taking certain drugs (such as diuretics, beta blockers) and high coffee and alcohol consumption. Stress, pregnancy, breastfeeding, strenuous exercise and ageing increase magnesium needs in the body. Foods rich in Magnesium include green leafy vegetables, such as spinach, kale, Swiss Chard; nuts and seeds, such as almonds, cashews, Pumpkin and Sunflower seeds; artichokes, avocado, bananas, figs, legumes (esp. Black Beans), dark chocolate and raw cacao nibs. To find out whether you are at risk of a magnesium deficiency you can do a 1 minute survey at https://magnesiumguide.com.au/magnesium-minute/ on the Magnesium Guide website. If you like more information on magnesium or have a particular health concern you would like to address, please feel free to contact me. I am available Wednesdays and Thursdays between 9am and 3pm at the Albany Body & Mind Health clinic in Albany. Enjoy your day! Warm regards Conny

24.01.2022 Plum Crumble Cake - Gluten free We love crumble cake in our family and recently when my lovely friend Sheila gave me some fresh plums I could not resist baking. Ingredients... 150g Tapioca Starch 180g Buckwheat Flour 2 tablespoons LSA (Linseed, Sunflower and Almond mix) 1/2 tsp of sea salt 50g Rapadura sugar 140g to 150g Coconut oil, melted (if the dough mixture is too crumbly, add more oil) 3 tablespoons of Almond milk 1 large egg 1 egg yolk Topping Plums, quartered Cinnamon Nutmeg Sunflower Seeds Pumpkin Seeds Mix dry ingredients in a bowl, add melted coconut oil and eggs and mix until the dough is crumbly but sticks together when pressed between your fingers. Take 2/3 of the dough and press into the cake tin, then place plums (or other seasonal fruit) on top, sprinkle with cinnamon and nutmeg. Add some Sunflower and Pumpkin seeds and finally place the remaining 1/3 of dough in crumbles over the cake. Bake at 175 degrees C for about 40 minutes. Enjoy.

23.01.2022 Professor I-Min Lee from Harvard Medical School recommends swimming, Tai Chi, strength training (lifting, Pilates, Yoga etc), walking and Kegel exercises as the best exercises for your body. Have a lovely day and happy exercising!

23.01.2022 Have you ever thought about how many chemicals we are exposed to on a daily basis? Or how these chemicals could perhaps affect our health and well-being? With chemical giant Monsanto (now Bayer) facing more court cases in regards to the link of Round Up causing cancer and chronic illnesses in general on the rise it is important to look at the ill-effects of chemicals. If you are free tomorrow evening the documentary The Human Experiment will be shown at 6.30pm at CWA, Serpentine Road in Albany. Its such an important topic to discuss and create more awareness about if we have a keen interest to not only improve our health but also the health of our precious planet. I hope to see you there tomorrow. Warm regards Conny

23.01.2022 Wishing you and your families a peaceful festive season and a year full of health and happiness. I look forward to seeing you again in the new year. Warm regards Conny

22.01.2022 Finally popular cereals, including Nutrigrain and Milo are in the spotlight for their misleading Health Star Ratings. Many cereals, especially the very popular ones are very high in sugar and certainly do not deserve their rating. Sugar has many detrimental effects on the body, a high intake increases the risk of developing Type II Diabetes, heart disease, and cancer. Sugar is also addictive and can affect behaviour. It has no nutritional value at all. Given that we are alre...ady seeing many children developing Type II Diabetes, which used to affect older people we need to look at healthier breakfast options. Home made porridge, smoothies made with natural yoghurt and fresh seasonal fruit, home made baked beans, sourdough bread with avocado and eggs, omelette with mushrooms and so on are just some ideas. Go for it and have a try, you might find that you have more and longer lasting energy than after eating a cereal high in sugar for breakfast. And if you need some sweetness you can add a little bit of raw honey (not for children under 2 years of age) or rice malt syrup. Warm regards Conny Wehland

22.01.2022 Two weeks to go.!!. Win a fabulous treatment for you or your mum.

22.01.2022 Garlic - Natures Antibiotic and more Do you include garlic in your daily diet? If not, I encourage you to do so as garlic has many health benefits. It is * anti-bacterial * anti-fungal... * anti-parasitic * a cardiovascular tonic (reducing cholesterol and blood pressure) * has cancer preventative properties * promotes healthy gut flora * assist in regulating blood sugar Garlic supports the immune system and has been found to reduce the duration of the common cold and flu. Studies have shown that the regular consumption of vegetables from the onion family (garlic, onion, leeks, shallots, chives) can reduce the risk of certain cancers, especially those of the digestive tract - see https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4366009/ To get most of the health benefits from garlic it is important to crush the clove with the blade of a knife or the palm of your hand. Leaving it for about 10 minutes before cutting or pressing it, is necessary for the molecule Alliin to be converted into the active constituent Allicin. Allicin gives garlic the strong smell. When consuming raw garlic, add some parsley which will help to reduce garlic breath. If used in cooking, add it towards the end as the longer garlic cooks the less potent it becomes. Garlic can also be used topically by placing a cut clove on stings, pimples etc for its antibacterial action - yes, I know the smell would not be too pleasant. And lastly, if you have a herb garden, you can plant garlic cloves now and harvest in October. Warm regards Conny Wehland #garlicimmunesupport #garlichealthbenefits #herbalmedicine

22.01.2022 Zantac, a popular medication to treat heartburn, has been in the headlines for its apparent links to cancer. Zantac lowers stomach acid levels, which is irritating the mucosal lining of the oesophagus in those experiencing constant heartburn. But just lowering the acid, is not really addressing the root of the problem, which is a weakened lower oesophageal sphincter not closing properly after food has entered the stomach. It is important to address dietary and lifestyle factors when looking at reflux; smoking, overeating, alcohol, coffee, tea, coke, chocolate, and peppermint can all worsen heartburn. A naturopath can address the dietary and lifestyle factors and also prescribe herbs and nutrients to improve digestion and repair the gastric mucosa.

Minister Greg Hunt MP has pledged $2 million for updated natural ...therapy reviews to determine whether "certain" therapies should be eligible for subsidy through the Private Health Insurance rebate. Dr Kerryn Phelps MP however, is urging the government reverse its ban while the review is undertaken. 07.01.2022 Caffeine - is it beneficial for everyone? Do you need a cup of coffee in the morning to get going? Well, research in recent years has shown the many benefits moderate caffeine consumption can have on longevity and health. Coffee is one of the worlds most popular beverages, containing antioxidants, flavonoids, magnesium and other compounds. Low to moderate doses (3-5 cups/day, about 400mg/day) can increase alertness, energy and the ability to concentrate. In sensitive people..., children and young adolescents though, caffeine can cause anxiety, restlessness, insomnia, upset stomach and problems concentrating. The recommendation for pregnant women and those wanting to conceive is to restrict caffeine consumption to less than 200mg/day as it can interfere with conception and has been associated with an increased risk of miscarriage. Listen to your body, if you find you are sensitive to caffeine, it might be time to reduce your consumption or find an alternative. Thank you for your time and have a lovely day!

07.01.2022 Paleo Bread Recipe One of my lovely clients gave me this great recipe. Ingredients for 1 standard loaf (buy organic if possible):... 1.75 cups Sunflower seeds cup Pumpkin seeds 1 cup Linseeds 1 cup LSA 3 cups Quinoa flakes 1/3 cups Chia seeds 2/3 cups Psyllium husks 2 tbsp Hemp seeds 1 tsp Sea salt cup Olive oil, extra virgin and cold pressed litres filtered water Combine the dry ingredients, then add olive oil and water. Mix until all evenly soaked. Place mixture in bread tin and press down firmly. Bake at 180 degrees C for around 45 minutes. Cool and cut into slices and keep in the fridge. You might want to freeze a portion of the bread (I place the slices in a container) as the paleo bread has only a limited shelf life if not kept cool. The bread is delicious freshly baked. After it has been in the fridge/freezer it is best toasted (in toaster, sandwich maker or frying pan) as it could otherwise be a bit boring. I like mine with Tahini, raw honey and LSA but its also delicious with savoury toppings. Happy baking! In case you dont know how to make your own LSA meal: (use organic ingredients, if possible) 1 cup Linseeds 2/3 cups Sunflower seeds 1/3 cups raw almonds Blend all ingredients until finely ground. Store in glass container in the fridge. Sprinkle over yoghurt, porridge, add to cake recipes etc.

05.01.2022 If you are seeing an integrative medical practitioners your choice of receiving advice on non conventional therapies is under threat as The Medical Board is currently looking into regulating the advice that can be given by medical practitioners. You have a right to receive the best care possible to be able to make informed decisions about your health.

05.01.2022 Did you know that about 50% of the Australian population suffers from chronic disease? A lot can be done to enjoy health and reduce the risk of developing chronic diseases which are often caused by lifestyle factors. Educating the population about a truly healthy diet and lifestyle is necessary. Here are some suggestions. DIET Eating organic and wholesome foods which agree with your body, are energising and making you feel well, not tired and sluggish is so important. The mo...re processed the food is the less nutritious it is. If we keep on putting the wrong fuel into our car it will break and require costly repairs. EXERCISE Daily exercise, this can as simple as a daily 30 minute brisk walk. Different types of exercises work for different people. Find the one that you like and can incorporate into your daily life. RELAXATION We nowadays live in a world where we tend to rush from one thing to the next. Meditation has so many beneficial effects, but might not be for everyone. Others can relax well going for a bush walk, reading a book, getting a massage. Looking after your health and well-being early in life will cost you less in the long run. Wishing you a wonderful day! Warm regards Conny

04.01.2022 An interesting study on how fluoride affects iodine absorption in the body.

04.01.2022 Castor oil packs for period pain Pelvic pain can be very debilitating and castor oil packs are a great home remedy. I have had good results in reducing pelvic pain with the good old castor oil packs and taking herbal tonics with specific pain reducing herbs. For young girls starting to menstruate and experiencing some cramping it might be worthwhile trying the castor oil packs first instead of taking over the counter painkillers. Severe period pain is not normal and needs to be investigated. Have a lovely day!

02.01.2022 Immune Supporting Winter Syrup (Oxymel) for your home apothecary Are you getting ready for the winter season? Here is a simple recipe for a syrup you can make yourself at home and have ready when those first symptoms of a cold/flu start. Obviously, during this year with the novel virus Covid-19 circulating you should always consult with your GP for further advice. You need:... 50 grams of fresh ginger, peeled and sliced 50 grams of fresh garlic, peeled and crushed 1 teaspoon of black pepper corns 250mls Organic Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) 150 grams raw honey Put the ginger, garlic, peppercorns with the ACV into a jar covered loosely with a plastic lid (to avoid corrosion of the metal lid) or with baking paper. Place into a slow cooker for 2 to 3 nights. Put it on low temperature overnight, leave overnight and turn off in the morning with the jar still in place. Fill the slow cooker with water and turn on again the following night. Do this for 2 to 3 nights. Then strain the liquid, add 150grams of honey, place into slow cooker to help dissolve the honey. Finally, decant into a sterilised bottle. On presentation of a cold or flu take 1 to 2 tablespoons every 2 to 4 hours. If you dont have a slow cooker, you can also make the oxymel using a water bath on your fireplace or in your oven using low temperature.

02.01.2022 Its Lipoedema Awareness Month! Lipoedema is a chronic condition affecting many women and it is often misdiagnosed as obesity. Medicare does not contribute to treatments, garments or liposuction surgery. Those affected often resort to funding their liposuction surgery to reduce the sensitivity in their limbs. If you know someone who could be suffering from this chronic hereditary disease, perhaps you could ask them if they have heard about Lipoedema.

02.01.2022 WELLNESS TIP - Dry Skin Brushing for Detoxification Dry skin brushing is a wonderful and invigorating method of supporting the cleansing ability of the skin, which eliminates about 1/3 of the bodys toxins. The skin is the largest organ of the body and works together with the other 4 channels of elimination (kidneys, lungs, intestines and liver). If one or more of these organs struggle the others have to compensate. Dry skin brushing takes only a couple of minutes a day and ...is done in the morning on dry skin before having a shower. A brush with natural bristles and a long handle is used. Benefits of dry skin brushing Stimulates the lymphatic system, Unclogs the skin pores and removes dead skin Releases toxins Improves circulation How to do dry skin brushing: Always brush in a circular motion in the direction of the heart Use gentle pressure Avoid sensitive areas (genitals, face), skin that is broken and inflamed. Start brushing in a gentle circular motion from the feet and hands in the direction of the heart. When brushing the abdomen, go in a clock wise direction to assist the direction of the large intestines. Use a gentle pressure that results in a comfortable pink colour to the skin. After the skin brushing, have a shower to rinse off the dead skin cells. You may want to alternate warm and cold water to further invigorate the skin and improve circulation, Dry skin brushing might not be suitable for those with sensitive skin, eczema, and other skin conditions.
