25.01.2022 Had a lot of people ask me this week about thrush in frogs, and how the usual products aren’t working.. that’s because most of them are liquid based. Thrush thrives in wet, muddy environments, making it much harder to resolve in the wetter months. This little beauty is the answer, being applied daily NT-DRY is powder based that finds the damp, deep-in places that wet products can't find. It saps all that excess moisture out of the frogs and in turn helps kill the bacteria, a...llowing the frogs to regenerate. Like everything in this world prevention is always better than cure, so aswell as controlling thrush it’s an even better preventative Now available- NT-DRY $45.00

24.01.2022 ‘Step out of that van’... I DARE you...

21.01.2022 Hey everyone, just to let you all know as I’m sure you’re aware (a lot of you have probably had to put up with my ranting).. I have to go through checkpoints pretty much everyday for work, some days this can take 30 mins, other days it’s taken me over 3 hours! I will always try my best to get to you on time, but with these checkpoints taking chunks out of my work days I can only do ‘my best’. If I have to change appointments or cancel I apologise in advance, and apologies to some people I’ve already previously cancelled. Unfortunately a lot of this is out of my hands

20.01.2022 Certainly one of those weeks...

19.01.2022 Shod barely a week.. I’ll get thumb ache typing everything that’s wrong here.. Where are farriery standards?!? Didn’t have any foot to work with being shod so recently, but atleast now we’ve restored balance, got her level, and eased that sole out to remove all that sole pressure

19.01.2022 The old adage, No hoof, no horse, will always stand true! Without a healthy hoof, your horse’s overall health will be compromised. As caretakers of horses, it is ‘your’ duty to know the basic skills to evaluate the health of your horse’s hooves. What so many people may not realize is that improperly trimmed hooves can not only be unappealing, but could potentially cause extreme pain and even lameness if left uncared for, the same goes for improper shoeing.. I’m seeing ‘far’... too many cases here in Australia on a daily basis, ranging from budget price trims right up the ladder to top price remedial farriers based at vets, where the basic foundations and principles of trimming/shoeing simply do not exist! A quick anatomy lesson: The hoof capsule is an extension of the foot and dictates the effect of forces upon the leg. The relationship of the toe length to the heel length is vital to which part of the foot will take the most pressure. A long toe and low heel will result in excessive forces on the flexor tendons and suspensory apparatus. A thin sole depth can lead to bruising of the pedal bone. A contracted upright heel will not expand on landing and lead to excessive pressure on the navicular bone. Multiple abnormalities can affect all of these structures Watch the angles of your horse’s hooves as they grow and are trimmed. Point out to your farrier or veterinarian if/when the foot appears to be changing. Correct the angles as quickly as possible; the longer the foot receives abnormal forces, the harder it is to correct. Be proactive, understand your horse’s needs, learn the basic knowledge of balance and what to look for and know the difference between the right job, and the not so right job. It matters! These images are not meant to diagnose your horse. They are meant to give insight to the differences in every hoof

13.01.2022 ARTIFICIAL SHOCK ABSORBERS. If your horse needs help reducing the ill effects of concussion, the simplest solution is to place a generic leather or plastic pad between the hoof and shoe. Although the force reduction offered by these products is marginal, it's an inexpensive, useful first line of action that can eliminate most simple concussion related issues

12.01.2022 Happy Friday morning... Coffee with breakfast and lunch, thankyou Bianca

12.01.2022 It’s amazing how many issues with horses are man made.. ‘Balance’ - Its the ‘basic’ and ‘key’ principles of farriery..

12.01.2022 Australian farriery.. the gift that keeps on giving something tells me this shoe is gonna be unbalanced

12.01.2022 Bit of shoe fabrication for a broken pedal bone, purpose of this shoe is to immobilise the bone and prevent any movement in that hoof capsule, bar shoe to help support and distribute the weight, copper sulphate packing in between.. Happy farrier.. Happy Sully

12.01.2022 Hey Guys, Hailey here I’m still in hospital and heading in for surgery tomorrow morning so if I don’t get back to you tomorrow don’t stress I will get back to you when I’m not so out of it! Chat to you all again soon

11.01.2022 To all of my customers. This is the protocol that has been put in place by my farrier association.. I will be following these guidelines to the best of my ability. This may mean your regular routine shoeing will be postponed until a later date, please respect my judgment as to which category you come in to. Rest assured I will always put your equine’s welfare at the top of the list but before that I need to put my own health and people I care about first, as well as yours! ...I’ve seen group gatherings at livery yards of 10+ people because they’re off work.. I cannot urge you guys enough to realise this is not a holiday, lives are at stake and everyone needs to do there bit and really start to take this seriously! Stay safe Conor

10.01.2022 For those of you who don’t know I was injured recently and had to have the week off to medicate and recover.. Whilst I appreciate this injury was an inconvenience to some of you, and as a result are now overdue (I apologise for that) I’m only one person, there’s only so many hours in the day, I can only do so many horses, and I can only answer the phone/reply to as many people as I can.. please be patient and bear with me if I can’t make appointments or you cannot get hold of me.. I’m doing the best I can do Conor

01.01.2022 Credit: Steffi Kersten Text from Talbert Farrier Services, Pic from Huuf-ch - too good to not share: This isn't my photo. I don't know who to credit it to, but it is a great illustration. Heels grow forward, not down. As farriers, we've all heard owners request (or in some instances demand) "don't touch the heels", or "take all the toe you can but leave the heel", also we occasionally hear some trainer or self taught farrier saying the same sort of baloney. Such a statement... is a pretty good indicator that the person knows next to nothing about a horse's hoof and is just parroting what they've been told from some other yahoo. As heels grow forward, the base of support moves forward as well. This contributes to the development of the exact hoof type the "leave all the heel" genius is trying to avoid. I've followed farriers who were fired for allegedly taking too much heel, when in fact they were taking no heel, just as they were told, and that was the problem. (That and they decided it was easier to go along to get along rather than attempt to educate someone who was already so confident in their knowledge on the subject.) So this is like a PSA. "Leave all the heel you can" tells you the person knows as much about a horse's hoof as a person telling a NASA engineer they oughta attach a windmill to the next space shuttle to save on fuel. Just stop. Photo credit: Andi Weishaupt
