25.01.2022 Ants perform very important functions in the Australian environment. They are responsible for lots of removal of dead and decaying matter from the forest floor and help keep our bushlands clean. Here you can see some worker ants being protected by another ant which they have fed to grow very large, this ant now acts as security, and also has a role in cracking open larger seeds that the smaller ants cannot access. Native insects need lots of seeds and plant material to eat a...nd to build their homes with. Native grasses (Poa, Themeda, Microlaena etc) provide an abundance of seed and leaves for insects to use. #loveyourhabitat #habitatgarden #createhabitat #gardenforwildlife #sustainablegardening #wildlifegarden #plantindigenous #indigenousgardening #mornpenflora #wildflowers #localwildflowers #shop #shoplocal #onlineshop #supportlocalbusiness #morningtonpeninsula #morningtonpeninsulamade #onlineshopping #onlinestore #mornington #morningtonpeninsulabeauty See more

23.01.2022 Kangaroo Grass, Themeda triandra is probably one of the most widespread of all Australian native grasses. The journals of the early explorers and settlers make frequent reference to this grass. The attractive foliage and seed heads, its adaptability and low maintenance requirement has prompted growing interest in its use from landscape architects. T. triandra occurs on a wide variety of soils from sandy soils to heavy clays. There seems to be little association between abunda...nce of T. triandra and a specific soil type. Our First Peoples collected them in great quantities, to grind and bake into cakes. Bruce Pascoes book the Dark Emu is doing a wonderful job of sharing this knowledge and encouraging use of Wild Australian foods. * Back in stock #habitatgarden #createhabitat #gardenforwildlife #sustainablegardening #wildlifegarden #plantindigenous #indigenousgardening #mornpenflora #localwildflowers #bushfoods #bushfood #growbushfood #australianbushfood #bushtucker #heathland #heathybeauty #heathlandspecies #frogpond #frogbog #shop #shoplocal #onlineshop #supportlocalbusiness #morningtonpeninsula #morningtonpeninsulamade #onlineshopping #onlinestore #mornington #morningtonpeninsulabeauty See more

20.01.2022 Did you know Australian Magpies are said to be able to remember a face for years. You can actually make friends with your local magpies and theyll never swoop you! You can also tell if a magpie is a male or female by the colour of its back, female magpies have a much more grey back whereas males have a vibrant white back. 17.01.2022 Although this genus of grass only has one species (Microlaena stipoides), it should not be overlooked. Weeping grass provides masses of high nutrient seeds which are an invaluable resource for seed eating birds, such as corellas, for example. It is characterised by the way that its seeds weep when they are fully grown, it is a very common native grass in Victoria and chances are, you have probably seen it out and about. Weeping grass (Microlaena stipoides) and any of the wall...aby grasses (Rytidosperma spp.) are a perfect substitute for a European lawn. These grasses tend to stay green longer throughout the year than traditional European lawns such as buffalo grass. Another benefit is that they do not need to be watered or fertilised once established, making them a much more sustainable lawn option than their European counterparts. Microleana is also a caterpillar food plant for the Ringed Xenica, Common Brown and White Grassdart #habitatgarden #createhabitat #gardenforwildlife #sustainablegardening #wildlifegarden #plantindigenous #indigenousgardening #mornpenflora #localwildflowers #bushfoods #bushfood #growbushfood #australianbushfood #bushtucker #heathland #heathybeauty #heathlandspecies #frogpond #frogbog #shop #shoplocal #onlineshop #supportlocalbusiness #morningtonpeninsula #morningtonpeninsulamade #onlineshopping #onlinestore #mornington #morningtonpeninsulabeauty See more

16.01.2022 Lomandra longifolia - Spiny-headed Mat-rush - Karawun (Woi wurrung) A dense, strappy green with smooth flat long bright green leaves, with scented yellow flowers appear in rings on flower spikes. Commonly used in landscaping. A good choice for growing under established trees. Traditional uses include: the leaves being woven into bags, baskets and mats. While the leaf base, containing starch and water, were chewed to avoid dehydration. Edible flowers could be soaked to extra...ct the nectar and are said to have a taste like green fresh peas. The seeds would be ground for use in damper. Be careful where you buy them from, indigenous nurseries will have sourced the local species but Lomandra from regular nurseries can be sourced from anyway, often NSW originally which have a much larger chunckier form. #loveyourhabitat #habitatgarden #createhabitat #gardenforwildlife #sustainablegardening #wildlifegarden #plantindigenous #indigenousgardening #mornpenflora #wildflowers #localwildflowers #bushfoods #bushfood #bushfoodsofaustralia #growbushfood #australianbushfood #bushtucker See more

09.01.2022 Who doesnt love echidnas? These spiky ant-eaters are a little different to most mammals, they belong to a group called the monotremes. Along with platypus, these are the only egg laying mammals in the world. Echidnas are good burrowers but you will often find them living in a hollowed out log. They also eat hundreds of insects every single day so a diverse garden is extremely important to encourage these guys to live there. As you can see in the photo, indigenous grasses, gr...ound covers and strappy plants such as Dianellas and Lepidospermas provide amazing cover for echdinas to forage in. 03.01.2022 Can you help your local bandicoots? Deakin University needs residents of bandicoot areas to complete a 10-15-minute survey about the local population of Souther...n Brown Bandicoots. The Southern Brown Bandicoot is a native Australian mammal, that is currently under threat from urban development and predation from feral cats and foxes. We want to know if these bandicoots are using local backyards to move around and what features might be encouraging them to do so. Wed also like to find out about your experience of these bandicoots and how you feel about contributing to their conservation within the community. If this sounds like something youd like to be involved with you can find the survey here: https://researchsurveys.deakin.edu.au///SV_b9HIPTni1LZu6Hz You can also contact me, Emily Reynolds [email protected], or my principal supervisor Dr Euan Ritchie [email protected], with any questions you may have.
