24.01.2022 We are delighted to hear that ‘Animals Make Us Human’ has been released today by Leah Kaminsky and Meg Keneally, published by Penguin. This special book is a collection of reflective pieces by some of our favourite people exploring the many ways that the natural world has shaped and defined them. The thoughts of Dr Jack Pascoe, CEC’s Conservation & Research Manager, is featured, along with those of Bruce Pascoe, author of Dark Emu.

22.01.2022 Check out this Eastern Quoll triple chocolate fudge brownie! This was baked by one of our interns for Threatened Species Day, a day that marks the death of the last Tasmanian Tiger in Hobart Zoo in 1936. Although we have lost the Tasmanian Tiger, it’s important that we continue to work towards protecting other threatened species across Australia. We know the Spotted-tail Quoll, also called the Tiger Quoll (Dasyurus maculatus) here in the Otways, but the Eastern Quoll (Dasyuru...s viverrinus) which used to occupy nearly all of the eastern coast of Australia including the Otways went extinct on mainland Australian in 1963. Thankfully they survived in Tasmania, and in 2017, after intense fox control, they were successfully reintroduced by Rewilding Australia to Jervis Bay in New South Wales. Although we have a long way to go, it would be amazing to have the Eastern Quoll return to our Otways! #threatenedspeciesday #easternquoll #quoll #conservation #tsbakeoff #tsbakeoff2020 #bakeoff #threatenedspecies #otways

19.01.2022 Support nature with a special delivery from the Otways Although you can't visit us right now, you can still enjoy a bit of the magic of the Conservation Ecology Centre at home! We’ve launched an online stall on the Victorian Country Market website, where you can have the best of Victoria delivered to your door.... Our store has a range of beautiful gifts for the people you’d love to hug right now but just can’t. There are Keep Cups, Tiger Quoll brooches and other jewellery, as well as a beautiful jigsaw puzzle featuring Otway species drawn by ornithologists Elisabeth and John Gould to help keep you entertained at home. Even better, all purchases through our stall helps to support native wildlife and our threatened species research in the Otways. 17.01.2022 This little cup full of insects is helping us to understand more about invertebrate ecology at Cape Otway. These insects were collected prior to a planned burn and will be compared with insect populations after the burn. This part of an exciting study we’re doing with the support of The Thyne Reid Foundation to help us understand how fire affects insects. Insects are critical to ecosystem function but are often overlooked in land management planning. Understanding the impact... of fire on invertebrates helps us understand food source availability for ‘ecosystem engineers’ such as Long-nosed Potoroos (Potorous tridactylus) or Southern Brown Bandicoot (Isoodon obesulus), building knowledge for a wholistic, landscape-based approach to conservation. Want to help us identify insects? We’ll share images of a range of wonderful species over the next few weeks! #pitfalltrap #insecttrap #insectresearch #fireecology #conservation #invertebrate #otways #ecology
13.01.2022 Good communication is a cornerstone of effective conservation. Doug Gimesy Photography is one of the best and this workshop is an incredible for aspiring conservation photojournalists. Spots will book quickly so don’t wait! #sciencecommunication #conservation #wildlifephotography
13.01.2022 A low-intensity burn we put through this area in early winter has reduced the flammability of the grasses and has opened up the ground for us to plant native Chocolate Lilies (Dichopogon strictus) and Wallaby Grass (Austrodanthonia caespitosa) You can see the low intensity Winter burn didn’t remove any of the organic material which is exactly what we wanted. The grass is still alive but there is enough soil exposed to allow us to plant successfully and to allow for natural ge...rmination of seeds in the soil. We fenced off this patch of planted grasses to stop hungry kangaroo and wallabies raiding the fresh green grasses, at least until they’re big enough to survive a nibble or two! #australiangrasses #australianplants #replanting #chocolatelily #wallabygrass #otways #wildotways #ecology #restoration #ecosystem #functionalecosystem #ecologicalburn #caringforcountry

08.01.2022 Who's hiding in that pouch? We were most excited to discover recently that our female Long-nosed Potoroo, Pipette, was with joey. This adorable little bubba is the first animal we've bred here who is destined for a new life at Wildlife Wonders.
