At the core of this profession is the understanding of building control process (i.e. building standards, codes & practice). In Australia, this means the National Construction Code, Australian Standards referenced within the National Construction Code, the Building Act 2011 and Building Regulations 2012, any other relevant legislative documents, and the requirements of the local authority (local government). This practice requires an incredibly broad set of skills, knowledge and experience. Common tasks will range from desktop assessment of technical documents for building approval, to inspections of unauthorised structures, to approving the occupation/use of newly constructed buildings.
