24.01.2022 Aviation accounts for two percent of CO2 emissions. This may seem relatively low, but air travel emits 90 percent more CO2 than travelling the same distance by rail. Rail or road can be an alternative for short-haul flights over land, but what about intercontinental and long-distance destinations. So far, research to make flying more sustainable has concentrated on replacing fossil fuel with electric or hydrogen engines. However, a new design the Flying-V may change the s...hape of sustainable flying. Delft University of Technology (TU Delft), Royal Dutch Airlines (KLM) and international airplane manufacturer Airbus partnered up to help to make the aviation industry more sustainable. Their futuristic Flying-V plane design has the same capacity as an Airbus A350 but uses 20% less fuel. A scale model prototype recently made a successful maiden flight. www.nlplatform.com//flying-v-changes-shape-sustainable-fly
24.01.2022 Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO) published a short interview with Sjoerd Wennekes from Active Cues, on launching their interactive game for people with dementia in Australia. Magic Table is a Dutch invention. The table, on which light animations are projected, stimulates physical and social activity. The games provide a vivid and positive experience for people with dementia by initiating interaction, counter balancing the apathy that is typical of this condition. In the in...terview, Wennekes explains how Tovertafel by Active Cues has become successful in Australia and how the Embassy and Consulate General were able to assist the company in the Australian market. 23.01.2022 Budget Day (or Prinsjesdag) is the third Tuesday in September and marks the state opening of parliament. Budget Day is renowned as a celebration of Dutch democracy. On this day the budget and plans of the Dutch government are presented to parliament. Parliament's right to decide on the government’s budget is one of the most important and fundamental aspects of our democracy. To be able to exercise this right effectively, freedom of expression and free access to information ar...e essential. The right of access to information is an important tool for promoting the rule of law, fighting corruption and safeguarding human rights. A free press and an active civil society are essential in order to safeguard the right to information, so that governments and public bodies can be held accountable. In normal times, without COVID-19, several ‘celebration of democracy’ festivals would take place, in the lead up to Prince’s Day. His Majesty the King and Her Majesty the Queen would travel in the Royal Dutch Carriage, or ‘Glass Coach,’ to the Hall of Knights in The Hague, where the King typically delivers the Speech from the Throne. However, due to the pandemic, the festivals and the tour in the Glass Coach have been canceled. The King will read the Speech from the Throne in the Grote Kerk in The Hague. This will be televised and can be watched via NOS (Netherlands Broadcasting Company) in Dutch. Read more here: www.netherlandsandyou.nl//09/princes-day-in-the-netherlands

22.01.2022 A message from Ambassador Marion Derckx to mark the 50th anniversary of the Dutch Courier: 'Over the past 50 years the Dutch Courier has been an indispensable source of information for the Dutch community in Australia. Many Dutch migrants moved to Australia after World War II, when the Netherlands governmentactively encouraged emigration, while Australia warmly welcomed the immigration of can-do Dutchies, who made major contributions to the Australian postwar economy.... Even though they were called the ‘invisible migrants’, many of them found each other in Dutchclubs and associations. The Dutch Courier became the most prominent Dutch newspaper Down Under that kept them connected with their country of origin; providing news and stories about the Netherlands and the Dutch in Australia, as well as items on history, language, food and sports. I commend former editors Max Leening and Cor Lefel, and current editor Carole Overmaat for the amazing job they have done. The embassy and consulate general of the Netherlands in Australia warmly congratulate the Dutch courier on this special anniversary. I am pleased to confirm our support to the exhibition that will take place in Melbourne next year and heartily encourage you to also support this great initiative.' Marion Derckx Ambassador

20.01.2022 The programme for yesterday's Budget Day 2020 (Prinsjesdag) was different due to measures taken to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. The event therefore took place without spectators. The municipality of The Hague asked people not to come to The Hague and to watch the day’s events on television instead. The customary carriage procession featuring the Glass Coach did not take place, and the King delivered the Speech from the Throne in the Grote Kerk. The Grote Kerk offer...ed sufficient space for those present to keep 1.5 metres apart. In his annual address, the King set out the government’s key plans for the year ahead. You can read the English translation of the Speech from the Throne 2020 here: www.royal-house.nl//speeches/2020/09/15/speech-from-the-th

14.01.2022 Hi everyone, Our names are Aletana and Arushi. We are both students at the ANU and applied for Girls Run The World initiative by The Girls Leadership Network that gives women the opportunity to work at an embassy for a day. We were fortunate enough to have been allocated to spend the day at The Netherlands Embassy. It was an extremely insightful experience. We learned a lot about diplomacy, foreign affairs, career path options, personal experiences of the staff and how to b...e impactful to the world. We immediately felt welcomed, thanks to the wonderful team. We must give a special acknowledgement to Katrina and Annick for organising our visit and making it so wonderful! We have benefitted from the expertise of the staff here that will be conducive to the career options we might choose later. We recommend this programme for any young women that have an interest in foreign affairs. Once again, we would like to thank The Netherlands Embassy for providing us with such a unique experience and we look forward to reconnecting with them. 04.01.2022 The culture of the internet and 'fake news' has inspired a new Dutch exhibition by Australian-Dutch artist duo Luke Conroy (Aus) and Anne Fehres (NL) about Dutch explorer Abel Tasman and his journey to Australia in 1642. In a time where the truth has multiple perspectives, the artists want to give this mass of conflicting information a physical form. Their works on Tasman are regarded by the artists as 'mind maps' of contemporary existence that visualize the enormous flow of ...information and ideas. The works included in the exhibition are a combination of digitally printed collages and manual techniques. The exhibition premieres in the Netherlands on 18 September, in the city of Enschede, at cultural centre Concordia Film Theater Beeldende Kunst, and will on display until 4 October.
