25.01.2022 This year, BPD Awareness Week is taking place from 1 - 7 October with the theme Flipping the Script: Changing the Narrative on BPD. This year were aiming to... change the way people think and talk about borderline personality disorder, encouraging people living with BPD to be mindful of the way they think about themselves, move towards strengths-based self-talk and to celebrate their strengths. This is important for our self-worth, helps us to understand behaviours and leads to sustainable wellness. For more information and to share your story, visit https://www.bpdawareness.com.au/share/ You can also read the stories of people who have shared previously https://www.bpdawareness.com.au/lived-experience/

22.01.2022 For some people not much has changed over the last few months and for others there has been challenges. As we move back into the busyness of life and lifting of... restrictions its pretty normal to have some mixed feelings. If you are feeling a sense of uncertainty or worry, consider: Making some plans (but not too many) - it helps to work out your priorities Name the feelings - it is much easier to validate or respond to something thats been named. Pace yourself and avoid comparison with others and take it at your own pace. Allow time to adjust - we are all in an adjustment phase, be kind to yourself.

17.01.2022 For the parents of children with mental health issues, If your wanting to get your voice heard, Please contact the number below, ... #### My name is Geoff Smith and I am the psychiatrist leading the above review on behalf of Dr Nathan Gibson, the Chief Psychiatrist. Other members of the Review group are Dr Helen Milroy, Professor of Child Psychiatry at PCH (and formerly a Commissioner with the Royal Commission into Institutional Child Abuse), A/Professor Theresa Williams (Office of the Chief Psychiatrist) and Dr Kyran Graham-Smith. In undertaking this Review, we will not only be considering the clinical care provided to Ms KS but will also be paying particular attention to the adequacy of current services to respond to young people with complex needs and high risk behaviour and make recommendations aimed at addressing any gaps in the services available to support them and their families. Clearly young people like Ms KS often have mental health problems as younger children and these persist, culminating in the tragic events that led to her death. The timeline for our Review is quite tight and we will not be able to meet widely with individuals or groups of parents/carers and, therefore, I was hoping that you might be able to canvass the experiences of parents in your forum on the issue of the adequacy of services for children like Ms KS with complex needs not just at the age of 12 or 13, but in the years leading up to this. We are particularly interested in their views about services that are performing well, gaps in services for children and their views on what could be done to improve services for children with complex, high-risk needs. We are, at this time, not in a position to review the whole of child, adolescent and youth mental health services. Our focus will therefore be more on children like Ms KS who are at high risk of self- harm or suicide and the 5 or 6 years leading up to this stage. Kind regards Geoff Dr Geoff Smith, OAM Senior Psychiatrist Research and Strategy Office of the Chief Psychiatrist Clinical Associate Professor Division of Psychiatry University of Western Australia Tel: 6159 6894 Mob: 0419 981 670 [email protected]

12.01.2022 Mental Health Care Plans are changing You might have seen the news that your mental health care plan now covers an extra 10 sessions, which means you can get... Medicare to cover the cost of up to 20 sessions. Here is some more info on what’s changing: When does this start? This starts from last Friday 9th of October How will it work? From now on, when you get a mental health plan it will be for 10 sessions. Once those 10 sessions have been used up you’ll need to go back to your GP with a letter from the person treating you to see if you can access the extra 10 sessions. Can I access this if I already have a mental health plan? From what we understand, those who already have a mental health plan and those who get a new mental health plan are both eligible for the 20 sessions. If you already have a mental health plan it’s a good idea to talk to your mental health professional and GP about how to access the additional sessions. What is a mental health plan? A mental health care plan is something you can get from your doctor (GP) that covers some of the costs of up to 20 sessions with a mental health professional. Will my mental health plan still cover the cost of sessions over the phone or video call? During COVID-19 medicare was expanded so that you could cover the cost of mental health services that were over the phone or on video call (telehealth). This has been extended until the 31st of March 2021. How long will this last? This extension will be available until the 30th of June 2022 Where can I get more information? Fact Sheet: http://www.mbsonline.gov.au//Factsheet-Practitioners-Menta Post from Australian Association of Psychologists: https://www.facebook.com/aapioz/posts/3368070859926337 ID: Light yellow square with grey text reads your mental health plan now covers 20 sessions there is purple, yellow and blue stripes coming in from the sides

03.01.2022 On 24 August, Four Corners Australia aired an episode called Please dont judge. The program provided a sympathetic portrayal of the tragic impact that menta...l health system failures have had on a number of individuals and their families. However, it also unintentionally reinforced the negative and false stereotype that people living with complex mental health issues, such as schizophrenia, are inherently dangerous. Sandy Jeffs is a SANE Peer Ambassador, author and poet, who also lives with schizophrenia. Have a listen to her thoughts on the episode. *Video created by Heidi Everett for Sandy Jeffs.
