16.01.2022 Keratoconus patients who need reading spectacles now have an opportunity to throw them away. Duette Multifocal from Synergeyes have arrived in the practice! For mild to moderate keratoconic patients these lenses provide reading vision without the need to wear additional reading spectacles.
14.01.2022 Everyone over 45 years of age need reading glasses. Lately I have been working to improve the reading vision of mini-scleral RGP wearers by converting the Capricornia KATT3 min-scleral lens into a true multifocal. Three patients on board and happy. It's a small start but a big opportunity to free keratoconic patient from the additional inconvenience of reading spectacles.
10.01.2022 Technology for corneal cross-linking or CXL is increasing with several new devices released in the past year. The Avedro KXL is one of these - promising faster cross-linking times. There is also more developments aimed at keeping the epithelium intact. I think that there is some need for a clear head amongst all of this new technology. CXL works. It works very well. However, more importantly it worked very well when all of these devices were more simple. I am not yet convinced by the move to higher power UV sources or the wisdom of not removing the corneal epithelium. Newer is not always better.
03.01.2022 We've now been using the new UltraHealth hybrid contact lens from Synergeyes for about 8 weeks. This lens provides a uniformly high level of oxygen transmission across the rigid and soft portions of the contact lens. First impressions are good. ClearKone wearers certainly like the improved comfort and their eyes look much whiter and clearer by the end of the day. ... Will post more information as our learning curve with this contact lens progresses. Exciting new for patients who could not tolerate ClearKone or other RGP contact lenses.
01.01.2022 Not everyone who has keratoconus is straightforward, and not everyone can be fitted from a standard trial set. David designs bespoke contact lenses including a recent example of a front surface toric, aspheric multifocal, miniscleral contact lens. This provided the patient with distance vision of 6/6 (20/20) and near reading vision of N5 (enough to read the telephone book without reading glasses).
