21.01.2022 Today we feature photographer Lorrie Graham as part of the @LoudandLuminous online exhibition at Contact Sheet. Larissa Stores (aged 8 in 1999) had been Nipper since she was four. The Nipper is a young Life Saver in training. They can start as young as four years of age, however at this age they are called Minnows. Hundreds of children train as Nippers on Sydney's beaches each summer. Nippergirl, Larissa, is for me an image of equality. Her attitude open, determined he...r body language, unquestioning of her physical right to be there on the beach as a lifesaver. Equality is when women no longer feel the need to explain their presence and no longer feel like a minority - for that is what women are, by every criterion except the numerical. #photography #art #contactsheet #education #femaleinfocus #loudandluminous https://contactsheet.com.au//loud-and-luminous-online-exhi
20.01.2022 Today we feature artist Fabiana Canepa, as part of the LoudandLuminous online exhibition at Contact Sheet Break the Silence I am shocked and sickened every time I hear of another woman killed. This was the motivation behind the Alisa Tanaka-King Portrait. Melbourne based artist, Alisa, created The Bird Girls Project - a visual response to the horrifying number of women killed by acts of violence in Australia each year. She draws a portrait for each woman killed, to give a voice to those lives lost and bring awareness, change and gender equality. "The violence will never end unless we challenge gender stereotypes, call out toxic masculinity, and strive for fundamental cultural change. This all begins with equality." #contactsheet #photography #art #femaleinfocus #loudandluminous #mentorship #education

17.01.2022 Today we feature photographer Suzanne Phoenix as part of the LoudandLuminous online exhibition at Contact Sheet. Photographs punctuate my life. It gives my life a rhythm; it sets the pace and provides me opportunities to pause. It makes me brave, takes me to situations Id otherwise be uncomfortable in. It allows me to see things without judgment and stretches my boundaries. Its a tool for me to explore myself in a creative way, to not be in control or analyse and to grow a...s a person. I strive to document women. Women in all their glory. This image of Acacia, or Weird Alice Yankadic, was created in a series of 2019 International Womens Day portraits. This image represents some of the multidimensional sides of the person that Acacia is, drag queen, wrestler and queer performance artist. 12.01.2022 ANNOUNCEMENT: Due to the rapidly unfolding events of the last few days, we have decided to postpone the #loudandluminous 2020 exhibition, due to open on 3rd April. We are not closing we are going online. Please engage, talk to us, share and comment. ... We will announce, at a later date, that the exhibition will be shown towards the end of year when the threat of COVID-19 has reduced. We hope everyone understands, supports and respects this very difficult decision. Paul McDonald , Melissa Anderson, Hilary Wardhaugh
12.01.2022 Today we feature photographer Cathy Ronalds as part of the LoudandLuminous online exhibition at Contact Sheet. Marie-Hana, from the series ‘femininity’ "I was raised in Maori culture in a small town in New Zealand. I was youngest of 11, motherless at a young age, and grew up feeling isolated even though I was raised by community. Throughout most of my life, I witnessed and experienced alcoholism, violence and the disempowering of women. Women suffered in silence, alone. I...’ve lived in Australia 20 years. I feel more at home here, healing with my community of women. Ehara taku toa i te toa takitahi. Engari, he toa takitini. My strength is not the strength of one. It is the strength of many." 10.01.2022 Artist in Focus | Carly Earl LoudandLuminous exhibition online Contact Sheet Sisters Elaine and Karen Liddy are rangers for the Lama Lama National Park (CYPAL) in far North Queensland. The park, which recently celebrated its ten year anniversary, was the first of its kind in the country to be jointly run by traditional land owners alongside Parks & Wildlife Services. Furthermore, Lama Lama is also well known for its strong female presence, with half of all rangers being women.... Karen and Elaine Liddy are the backbone of the Lama Lama operations. These strong indigenous women are educating the younger generations about how to respect and care for the land, just as their ancestors did before them. This image was taken while discussing the importance of women on country. Karen put it simply If it was all men, it would be messy, if a female is there, it will be organised. #contactsheet #photography #art #loudandluminous

08.01.2022 Artist | Mel Anderson - LoudandLuminous online exhibition Contact Sheet - GailForce Gail Austen; OAM When I said the women were going out round 4pm, all the other teams - all three of them - Miami, Straddie and Brisbane - got into a huddle. It was too dangerous for women they said. Bad luck, I said, My women are going out and if you cant match it - tough. They went out, and we won. That was surfing history at its best.
07.01.2022 Today I begin the 7th year of the Contact Sheet journey. This year, no big celebration but I will have a quiet glass of wine (or two). This year has been f***ed for arts organisations, artists and workers. But I wanted to say THANK YOU to everyone who has supported me on this journey and especially over the last 6 months. The artists, curators, staff, interns, students, community, sponsors and friends. Without this support, the doors would have closed for good. Well, what ne...xt for CS and myself? Well, I have taken some downtime to reflect and think about this over the last 6 months. The journey will continue and CS will be launching a new education program over the next few weeks. The program has been designed in response to the current climate and how our audiences have been impacted. If you are not subscribed to our newsletter, jump across to our webpage and sign up to guarantee you receive all notifications and news. Thanks again for your support and love, its good to be back. Paul
06.01.2022 Artist | Alejandra Olavarria LoudandLuminous Online Exhibition at Contact Sheet In my photographic practice, I strive to capture unguarded moments. Those spaces in existence that reveal beauty, vulnerability and truth. This image forms part of a larger body of work dealing with frailty and nakedness, both literal and figurative whereby the human body is revealed as existing within a larger chain of events, dependant on the self as much as losing itself to wider human emotions. #takeover #100femaleartists #female #contactsheet #contactsheetonline #photography #art

05.01.2022 Today we feature artist Kimberley Wallis as part of the @LoudandLuminous online exhibition at Contact Sheet. My work focuses on capturing the dramatic scenes of commuters as they travel to and from the city of Melbourne each day. The public transport system of a city is the great social equalizer, all variations of socio-economic groups, ethnicities and ages use these intricately built systems to get to their destinations. By capturing the subject matter with a cinematic sty...le, the subjects story unfolds for the viewer to interpret within their own personal bias and lens. #photography #art #contactsheet #education #femaleinfocus #loudandluminous https://contactsheet.com.au//loud-and-luminous-online-exhi

02.01.2022 LoudandLuminous online exhibition | Artist in focus, Brydie Piaf Contact Sheet #contactsheet #female At home my daughter chooses to wear comfortable unrestrictive clothing that suits the season. Despite not being the 1960s any longer, that choice for her hasnt always been available at school. Skirt or dress, it would take a challenging 13 months from the first raised question- why cant girls wear pants too? Now free to choose just as her brothers had always been able, her school uniform is no longer a hindrance to either learning or being active. Was it worth fighting for? YES. Choice is always worth fighting for. (Four states have now changed their school uniform policy.)
