21.01.2022 What is really happening on your Shopfloor? If you want an easy analysis tool that can show you what is really happening on your shopfloor then Activity Sampling is for you. In a relatively short period of time (3-4hrs) you can get a good understanding of the Value Add & Non Value Add that is present in your production processes. Activity Sampling is easy to set up, quick to train people on & can capture data over multiple operators at the same time. The theory is based on ge...tting enough random snapshots of what the operators are doing to create a picture of what is actually happening on the shopfloor. If I capture two records every minute, that's 120 an hour, so 360 in three hours, get 3 other people doing the same & you have 1,440 snapshots. As long as these snapshots are randomly taken & the data capture of what an operator was doing at the time of the snapshot is accurate then you have a good picture of what is actually happening all the time, over multiple operators. This picture can be used as a whole to see the % Value Add & Non Value Add being achieved, don't be surprised when the figures are 50/50 or worse, a good starting score is typically less than 60% Value Add in my experience. The good news with this is, it gives you 40% of Non Value Add to look to remove :-) Activity Sampling splits Value Add & Non Value Add into categories that you determine, based on the process being analysed, typically the Value Add categories are fitting parts or assembly etc. while Non Value Add categories are walking, material handling, even inspection should be classed as non value, all be it that, it may be necessary non value (not always though, see my blog on Quality Checked to Death) Once you have the data, you can start highlighting areas for improvement, if 25% of all the operators time is spent walking, doing some simple kaizen activities to reduce the walking will increase productivity, less walking means more time to process parts. The Activity Sampling will also show the detail per operator, so say you recorded 8 operators during the analysis, you can identify specific operators with high Non Value Add & target that for removal. If an operator has 60% waiting time, is the line balance correct? One operator is walking 40% of their time, doing walk pattern analysis could help. Activity Sampling will not give you the solutions & is not a tool to get into the detail of what is happening, so the waste can be removed, but it is excellent to give you an overall picture of a whole production process capturing multiple operators and it will identify areas of waste both as a whole & per operator, that can be the focus of more detailed analysis. It is a great tool & easy, so why not give Activity Sampling a go, you may be surprised by what is really happening on your shopfloor. 14.01.2022 5S it is not really Scary http://www.linkedin.com/company/continuous-wave-pty-ltd I have heard many reasons & seen 1st hand at an old company, why 5S is not for them. "we have tried 5S, but it doesn't work for us","5S is too complicated to implement" or "It is too much work to maintain vs. the benefits" etc.etc. Working at Nissan, seeing 5S in action & helping suppliers implement 5S, I have come to the realisation these excuses come from a fear of the unknown.
