17.01.2022 [ Address The Cause Not Just Treat Symptoms ] 10 year old and keen runner Ash presented to the physio clinic with a 2 week bout of left sided mid-back pain felt when running. It became evident, as seen in the first video, that his mid-back pain was related to an increase in his running volume and probably related to his running style. Ash excessively rotates his head and trunk which can waste energy as when running our body is moving forwards (not out to the side).... Simple running technique tips of maintaining a still head by looking forwards and addressing hip stability and arm swing were given. With 2 weeks of regular practice at home; Ash’s running technique is much improved. Treatment of the symptoms (soft tissue massage) and mobility stretching of his mid-back was included and helped decrease the symptoms. However, if his running style was not addressed he may have possibly been at risk of similar problems down the track. This is Luke’s passion- to help address potential causes of injury, not just symptoms. A more streamlined running technique should hopefully help Ash become a more efficient runner. Well done on the great progress!

15.01.2022 [ RIDE FOR INESH WRAP UP ] What a weekend. Here’s the stats: 6 bikes. 8 cyclists. 24 hour ride. 2,200 kilometres between us.... 5 of the cyclists each notching up 400kms. 1 of these cyclists rode alone in NZ! Over 280 financial donors Over $35,000 raised for Kidney Health Australia and Inesh Myself personally: 400kms 2898 metres of elevation Average 103 watts Consumed 20 x 600ml bottles of Powerade and lots of other various foods Quad and calf heaviness main leg issues for me. At the 231km mark was very close to hitting a wall but recovered well. Saddle problems, that we all experienced, sitting on the bike seat for so many hours required ongoing repositioning for less discomfort. Between the 5 cyclists who did the full 24 hours; there were various patches we all individually battled but always found a way to get back on there and kept the kilometres ticking over. A huge thanks to the many contributors for the day. A special shout-out to: David Richards and Croydon Cycle Works for all the gear and the advice. Chris Sutton for lending me his Wahoo Kickr. Dineli Mather for the amazing spread of food at various points of the ride (chicken sandwiches were a real treat). Dharshi and Indran Hensman for the use of the A-Grade facilities for such an event and all the lovely food/fuel. Everyone else who brought food and drink or offered to get me something (eg Eilish Hensman). Mitch Soon for pumping out 200kms without preparation. My wife Lauren for allowing me to spend our wedding anniversary sleeping on the Sunday afternoon in recovery. To the cyclists; Ben Temby, Seb Mather, Heshan Gunewardena and Tom George. The best blokes to ride this with; absolute commitment the whole way. Despite COVID restrictions changing our plans, you all stuck with the vision, from the zoom meetings, some rides together when we were permitted during lockdown, the preparation leading in- a solid team that maintained the fight on the day. Particular mention to Ben Temby. You first gave me a call wanting to help out our friend Inesh and had a crazy idea.. it didn’t turn out how we thought but it certainly far exceeded our expectations. A great reminder that if we act out our good intentions how much of a difference we can make. Hats off to you Benny. A massive thanks to all those who supported our ride and this cause. Despite wrapping up a brilliant and hugely successful event, the reality is that Inesh Hensman and others living with Kidney Disease continue experiencing their daily challenges of living with the condition. They are the real champions fighting a fight they never asked to enter. mycause.com.au/events/rideforinesh

10.01.2022 [ WHAT IS THE PELVIC FLOOR? ] with physio Lauren Dowse The pelvic floor is a sling shaped layer of muscles which attaches to the front of the pelvis onto the pelvic bone, the sides of the pelvis and to the lower part of the spine called the coccyx bone. It has three main functions:... 1. Supporting the pelvic organs, those being the bladder, bowels and uterus in women and bladder and bowel in men. Supporting them keeps them in their optimal position. 2. Sexual function; to heighten sensation during intercourse for both men and women. 3. It aids with continence; making sure we can get to the toilet in time. 1 in 3 women and up to 1 in 6 men experience some form of pelvic floor dysfunction however it is a part of the body that many people don't even know exists!
