25.01.2022 Nothing can stop Australian people and Chinese people getting on with being friends and doing business! At the Australia China Friendship Society WA Annual Awards & 50th Anniversary dinner, we heard great speeches from our political leaders showcasing bipartisan unity in W.A. on the importance of maintaining close, warm relations with China. Both Ministers Hon Peter Tinley and former Premier Colin Barnett gave rousing presentations on the need for commitment to the relationship and how WA needs to and is leading the way. Great turnout and well done to Duncan Calder () and Nancy Chen.

24.01.2022 How many people do you know who are confident in the US leadership and who are not horrified to see the antics of President Trump in calling for the Liberation of Americans from life-saving lockdown measures? Americas reputational decline is sad. America has invested more money buying Australian assets than anyone else. America has been a valued ally just as we have been its regional Deputy Sheriff. But do we need to adjust to a changing world? Why do we see media figures... like Alan Jones and various politicians continuing in sycophantic adulation of President Trump? When even erstwhile Trumpophiles like UKs Piers Morgan openly criticise Trumps obvious mismanagement of the COVID-19 pandemic, why is there so much fear here of criticising Uncle Sam? After all, we know that cruise ships and America, not China, are our primary sources of infections. Why do our media and politicians remain silent on American failures? It cant be because they are too busy as so many have plenty of time to stick their boots into China. Going forward, our unquestioning allegiance to the US since 1942 needs to be replaced by a more clear-sighted analysis of what is truly in Australias national interests. We need to end colonial subservience.

23.01.2022 Another Murdoch Media Myth about China is dispelled As the US : China trade talks roll on, we continue to be fed anti-China rhetoric and myths designed to fuel an unjustified fear about China in order to benefit US economic interests and preserve US global hegemony. One of the most popular myths is that China is attempting a global takeover through debt diplomacy to Africa and the South Pacific ... This Myth has no substance. Of course some African countries owe money to China. Such debt exists because China has been building badly needed infrastructure in Africa that delivers an improved economic future to the continent whilst also serving China by preserving many millions of Chinese jobs as Chinas own economic infrastructure needs slow. China delivers investment into Africa, China is NOT a country whose wealth has been built largely off the back of the African slave trade. This last week we have seen the Chinese Government CANCEL a massive debt owing by the Cameroon Government (reportedly 3,000 billion francs). This act of generosity has not received any mention in our media. Why not? The inconvenient truth is that this action so directly dispels the myth about Chinas debt diplomacy. https://lnkd.in/gbwXrUC #china #murdoch #us #tradewar #debtdiplomacy

20.01.2022 I am delighted to be sharing the podium today with the likes of Nev Power from FMG, Sun Xiaoxuan from Sinosteel, Lu Yongfeng from CNOOC and Phil Edmands from Gilbert + Tobin at the Australia China Business Cooperation Forum organised to AIACF to host a visiting Chinese delegation from the Belt & Road Initiative.

17.01.2022 Congratulations to JTSI on todays Korea Business Roundtable. The US agenda has often resulted in Australia adopting US policies that are detrimental to us; for example missing out on billions of investment from BeltAndRoad (BRI) and missing out on leading 5G technology through disengagement with Huawei. However today Gordon Flake, CEO of Perth USAsia Centre, promoted a clever, nuanced strategy of encouraging WA to engage more with Korea by seeking greater numbers of Korea...n students and tourists. This is smart as it is a diversification policy that benefits Australia rather than damages us. We should take note. We should also note South Koreas decision to participate in Chinas BRI even though it is a major US ally. South Korea has wisely prioritised its national interests. So should we. President Moon recently stated I am confident that a link between BRI and New North (Korea) and New South (Korea) policies will lead to peace and joint prosperity in the region. This is not without consequences for WA as reconnecting with Asia through BRIs link to the Korean Peninsula will allow it to access cheaper Pipeline Natural Gas instead of LNG. Australia needs to similarly participate in BRI to our gain! #beltandroad #auskorea #USAsiaCentre

12.01.2022 Australia can be changed in for New Zealand in each of the 3 quotes below and the sentiment would remain valid. No doubt the US is focussed solely on its interests and preservation of its global economic hegemony and is putting intense pressure on allies to fall in line. The problem with this for the allies is that we rely on China to maintain our economies and standard of living to a greater extent. So we should be strong, maintain friendship and act in our own best inte...rests! 1. New Zealand could help itself further if it was firm on not challenging China on behalf of the US and remained neutral 2. It is disappointing that in recent times we have seen the politicisation of our relationship, which sits directly in contradiction to our economic interests and our national security interests, 3. If China is a friend to New Zealand, they can treat New Zealand really well, but if China sees New Zealand as a friend of their enemy, they will start to treat it more harshly, #tradewar #China #worldtrade #NewZealand #economy

10.01.2022 HOW DO YOU FEEL about the increase in hate crimes against people of Asian descent happening all over the world? We have seen Malaysian and Singaporean young women being called Chinese and being insulted and beaten up here on the streets of Australia. It is very sad. Duncan Calder, former National President of the Australia China Business Council, was asked to record a message to those facing increased stigmatisation and abuse. DO YOU AGREE? What message do you have for those... facing hate crimes and for those political figures who share divisive messages knowing what the consequences will be? As Confucius said When anger rises, think of the consequences. Divisive messages spread fear and promote xenophobia and racist behaviour. They move us closer to increased conflict between countries. Let’s instead focus on unity and fighting the common enemies COVID-19 and Racism. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PTCQc7GFwk0&feature=youtu.be

08.01.2022 Are we going to be our own worst enemy? These graphs suggest that culture and values are having a significant impact on how severely COVID-19 impacts each country. As we can see below - Asian countries appear to be better controlling the growth rate than European countries and it is increasingly looking like the USA is following the European trajectory. Asian culture tends to value family and community at a premium and Western culture tends to emphasise individual human r...ights. Does this mean that we need to learn from Asia and accept temporary constraints on individual freedom of movement in order to minimise the overall impact? Can we control the growth curve? Dr Ryan from the WHO confirmed "there is a strong element of controllability in this disease... there is a real chance to blunt the curve, there is a real chance to bend the curve and reduce the number of cases that our health system has to cope with". Even before the WHO declared COVID-19 a global pandemic - Italy has reached out to China for support in its fight and China has responded positively - I encourage and pray that our leaders likewise learn from China. Now is the time to break down barriers and combine as humanity in this global battle.

07.01.2022 THE 2019 NEW YEARS RESOLUTION THAT GERALDTON WANTS TO HEAR At this time of the year, we each tend to reflect on our lives and make resolutions about what we want to change in the New Year. The people of the Mid West Region of Western Australia may well be hoping that Minister Alannah MacTiernan makes her 2019 New Years Resolution to be to Make Oakajee Port Happen. When I led KPMGs corporate finance team, I advised the Geraldton Port Authority and was blessed to be mentor...Continue reading

06.01.2022 Are you confused about what Donald Trump will mean for China? Are you having difficulty reconciling the unending abuse and doom surrounding Trump in the Western media with the record highs being achieved on U.S. stock exchanges? Contour Capital Managing Director, Duncan Calder, presents a two part series that examines what the Trump Presidency means for China. Please follow the link below to access Part One, in which Duncan, past National President of the Australia China Business Council, addresses the overall Sino : American geopolitical issues from Trumps election, Chinas role in the world and what President Trump means for Chinas regional influence and for Chinas culture.

05.01.2022 In today's West Australian newspaper, the article correctly quotes Duncan's view that Australia has a long road back to rebuilding its most critical trade relationship - but it is indeed not irretrievable - the pathway back is through friendship, through humility not hubris

04.01.2022 Who else does the Western #media like to ridicule as much as Donald #Trump? #Filipino President Rodrigo #Duterte has proved to be a very astute statesman in his dealings with first Obama and now #China. Colourful, yes; Controversial, certainly, but Effective - absolutely! Duterte fails to follow the desired #US agenda of attacking China. He recognises his strategic situation and China's policy of seeking to build a better defence for itself in the South China Sea against t...he arsenal of US #coalition weapons that surround it. The result, excellent and badly needed #investment flows. Once again Duterte shows statesmanship and restraint to best advantage his people, but is belittled in the media for his strategy. Why portray an accurate picture when you can go for a cartoon-isation of #world leaders? Perhaps it sells more papers. However - it doesn't do much to change growing #community cynicism over "FAKE NEWS"". #news #philippines

02.01.2022 You can only prod and poke a bear so long before it reacts. Even a Panda bear. Nobody likes to deal with people who attack them if they have a choice. People will always prefer to deal with friends. As long as Australia's Federal Government continues to be antagonistic - pushing Trump's agenda and rhetoric at every possible opportunity - we cannot expect China to continue to turn a blind eye to Australian subsidies or to continue to offer preferential treatment to Australian... companies. Will the pain that looks likely to hit our barley, tourism and education sectors spread even further? Is it finally time for Australia to put Australian interests first? Nearly 40% of everything Australia sells is bought by Chinese people. Is it wise to pick fights we don't need to and to be at the front of the battle? Just as Japan helped Australia to rebuild after WW2 and as China helped Australia to grow through the Global Financial Crisis created by Wall St - so too is China the country that has the most potential to help Australian business to rebuild and create new jobs.
