25.01.2022 The iconic Coogee Island Challenge ocean swim is back this April so this is the second bite of the wedding cake for season 2019/20. Some will say that the 2nd swim is the better event of the two that Coogee Surf Life Saving Club runs because it's run in autumn which is the best time of year to swim. If you get a typical autumn Sunday morning on swim day, then there are few things better than the smooth seas, warm water and a gentle offshore breeze. The main swim is a 2.4km c...ourse around Wedding Cake Island. But if that sounds a bit too much, there is a shorter 1km Splash & Dash swim and an 800m Junior Dash - both run inside the island. But here's a tip: the swim around Wedding Cake Island is one of Australia's great ocean swims. If you consider yourself an ocean swimmer, then you must do it at least once! Registrations are now open https://www.oceanswims.com//eventd/49/54/coogee-nsw-e.html . . . . #oceanswimming #oceanswim @coogeeslsc #coogeeislandchallenge

19.01.2022 2020 marks 20 years since the Coogee Island Challenge became what it is today. Here's an excerpt from the Events History document written by one of the swim's founders Heather Morris: "The Coogee Island Challenge event was created by Heather Morris as a fundraiser for the Coogee Surf Life Saving Club in 2000. Heather, who was the Chief Instructor at the time developed the concept after being inspired by Michael Ormsby following discussions at a training session. Michael w...as a club member and keen ocean swimmer who competed with his father in ocean swim events around Australia. At that time ocean swimming was the fastest growing sport in Australia but there were few opportunities within Sydney to compete in ocean swim events. The idea was initiated by Heather and after endless hours of planning and organisation and knock back's from the Club's Management Committee, the final format was approved by the Club on the proviso that the event would not cost the Club any money. So Heather sought sponsorship for the event with the assistance of Rebecca Hamilton. With some guts and determination, they were able to secure sponsorship from the Coogee Bay Hotel and Toohey's. Part of the sponsorship deal with Toohey's was that they wanted to include a surf boat race around Wedding Cake Island as part of the event." Next week, we'll post how the CIC came to be the iconic event it is today.

15.01.2022 Today would have marked the 20th Anniversary Coogee Island Challenge and we know everyone will be as disappointed as we are - the conditions today are perfect which makes it even harder to accept. Wishing you all the best of health, stay safe and stay well. The November 29th swim is still on schedule for the spring challenge but we will continue to monitor and be guided by directions from the authorities. . . .... . #oceanswim #coogee #coogeebeach #cic #coogeeislandchallenge @coogeeslsc #stayhome See more

14.01.2022 Following on from our recent message last week regarding the Coronavirus (COVID-19), we have made the difficult decision to cancel the April 5th Coogee Island Challenge swim but feel this is the right decision under the current circumstances. This event is one of Coogee Surf Life Saving Club’s major fundraisers with anywhere between 1,000 and 2,000 keen ocean swimmers. However as the current situation is changing and evolving very quickly, we have a social responsibility ...to reduce the spread of Coronavirus in our community. Public health and safety is our number one priority. For those who have already registered for the April swim, your registrations will automatically rollover to the November swim and we appreciate your support. For those who cannot make the November swim, please contact us by e-mail: [email protected] to arrange a refund. We understand people will be disappointed with this decision and we apologise for any inconvenience caused but hope that you can support us by getting behind the November swim. Stay healthy and stay safe.

14.01.2022 And they're off..

11.01.2022 More news on RunSwim Coogee... this is a brand new event run by Coogee Surf Life Saving Club (organisers of hugely popular Coogee Island Challenge run twice each year) This new event has a bit of everything to offer and we are spoilt with some of the prettiest coastline in the Eastern Suburbs. The event starts at Coogee Beach and heads south to the iconic Wylie’s Baths before looping around and heading north to Clovelly Beach. The 1st of the 3 x 400m swim transitions starts ...here as you swim over the top of the Gordons Bay Underwater Nature Trail! Once you reach the beach in Gordons Bay, you’ll then complete a 1km coastal run to the northern end of Coogee Beach, remove your shoes and begin the soft sand run down to the waters edge for the 2nd 400m ocean swim. On exiting the water for this swim, you’ll then run a further 400m across Coogee Beach to the southern end for the final 400m swim and then it’s a 100m sprint to the finish line! For those of you who do any sort of beach training, you’ll know that these distances and multiple transitions will challenge everyone and being a timed event, adds that little extra intensity for many. Ocean temp in May is still warm and the event's water safety of course managed by Coogee Surf Life Saving Club. With 12 weeks between now and the event, there is no better time to focus on that training program leading up to May 2nd. And remember, registrations open on the 14th February. Follow RunSwim Coogee (add link to the RSC facebook page) to keep up to date with the latest on this event. 06.01.2022 To all of our followers, competitors, swimmers, volunteers, water safety, stakeholders and spectators, we must unfortunately announce that we have made the very difficult decision to postpone the 29th November swim to a date to be advised in 2021. With the current COVID-19 situation in Australia, the current Public Health Order and unpredictable restrictions on public gatherings, it has become impossible for Coogee Surf Life Saving Club to be able to plan and execute a succe...ssful event and keep everyone safe on what is a busy public beach coming into the summer months. Entries rolled over from April's swim will now be rolled over to the event in 2021. Refunds will be considered if requested in writing to our Ocean Events email [email protected] otherwise they will be rolled over. The event will go ahead when restrictions allow and as soon as we know the date we will post here. Those that have purchased merchandise, these will be available to be collected at a date to be advised most likely in October. We will post the date when confirmed. We know there will be so many people disappointed with this decision but apart from those issues mentioned above, first and foremost, we have everyones health and wellbeing in mind. As event managers and surf lifesavers, our priority is to keep our members, participants and the public safe on the beach. . . . . #oceanswim #coogee #coogeebeach #cic #coogeeislandchallenge @coogeeslsc

01.01.2022 The Events Committee for the Coogee Island Challenge and RunSwim Coogee are committed to participant safety in its ocean swim and run events at all times. As you would know, the Coronavirus (COVID-19) is evolving as a major health issue across the country and the world. It also has the potential to disrupt large-scale events. Current advice as at 13th March 2020 from State and National Surf Lifesaving bodies is that there is no direction to cancel any large public gathering...s and therefore both the Coogee Island Challenge and RunSwim Coogee events are at this stage GOING AHEAD. The Government through Surf Life Saving Australia (SLSA) has advised that while it is difficult to predict how the outbreak will evolve in Australia, the situation may change rapidly so we will continue to monitor and communicate any changes that may apply. In the meantime, all participants should ensure they meet the obligations for participation, including being fit and healthy. Members and supporters attending events are advised to not attend if feeling unwell or have been exposed to the Coronavirus. For the latest advice, information and resources go to www.health.gov.au
