16.01.2022 CWR Tales - Exploring Beechworth We recently spent a few days meeting a number of the vignerons of Beechworth, which is located just south of Wodonga in north east Victoria. While the cellar doors are few and far between, there are plenty of great wineries here offering private cellar door visits. We will work hard to get a number of these producers to Coogee in the next 18 months as their wines are superb! And to make it even easier, there is a wonderful wine bar in to...wn called Cellar Door Wine Bar, where Lachlan offers most local wines by the glass, so you can try heaps of local wines without having to leave town. And it's such a good bar that many of the local vignerons drop by on Friday and Saturday afternoons to catchup with each other. Beechworth is a cool climate region renowned for its Chardonnay, Shiraz, Pinot and Nebbiolo, with some great Roussanne Marsanne emerging from a few producers. We also enjoyed a lovely Rosé from a talented young woman making her first wine - which will soon be available at the bar. But it was the chardonnay that blew us away. Most have probably heard of Giaconda - arguably Australia's greatest chardonnay - but there are many producers making beautiful wines that sit somewhere between the crispy of Mornington Peninsular chardies and the rich, buttery wines of Margaret River. Here are some of the chardonnays that we absolutely loved, which we will look at adding to our list: Giaconda, Savaterre, Traviatti, Domenica, Sentio, Sorrenberg, Serengale and A Roda. We had some great winery visits while in Beechworth, with Rick Kinzbrunner at Giaconda being the standout. Rick is one of the founding fathers of Beechworth wines, and his certified organic winery, minimalist winemaking process and incredible underground cellar and wonderful backdrops to enjoying his beautiful wine. We also enjoyed our tasting in the vines with Tessa Brown of Vignerons Schmoltzer and Brown, who make a very interesting portfolio of wines, with their red blend and pinot being or favourites. Simon Grant at Traviatti makes a great Nebbiolo, and the Chardonnay from Savaterre on the hill opposite Giaconda another treat. See more

Bhatia was most recently Head Sommelier and Buyer at two-hatted est. restaurant in Sydney which was awarded Australias Wine List of the Year in 2019 and for which he received the 2019 Judy Hirst award as Sommelier of the Year. Prior to est., Bhatia was Head Sommelier and Buyer for two-hatted Penfolds Magill Estate restaurant in South Australia, Chie...f Sommelier and Buyer at three MICHELIN starred Robuchon au Dôme in Macao, Chief Sommelier and Buyer at Gaddis Restaurant and Restaurant Felix at The Peninsula Hotel in Hong Kong and Head Sommelier at Raffles Hotel in Singapore.
