I know many of our very loyal customers are looking forward to fresh harpuka season I know we are! Back to normal trading hours next week.

04.01.2022 I'm often asked how come us commercials can still fish during the recreational demersal closure on the Westcoast. In 2008 the Westcoast bioregion came under fo...rmal management with all sectors required to reduce their catch of demersal iconic species by 50% from historic levels in 2005/06. The commercial sector was reduced from 1250 licences that could fish in the westcoast down to only 62 licences between Kalbarri in the north and Blackpoint east of Augusta in the south. We were also allocated a TAC( total allowable catch) which is managed by hours on the water and attached is a picture of my VMS antenna which allows the Department of fisheries to monitor us 24/7 and make sure no one us breaking the rules, it is an offence for this to be turned off and emails must be sent at the start of every trip to let fisheries know what we are up to. So these hours(which we pay fees for by the hour whether they are used or not) can be used at any time at our discretion but once used that is it for the year you must cease fishing. Contrary to popular belief the recreational 2 month demersal closure is purely a effort reduction closure and has nothing to do with spawning time's as all the different fish spawn at different period's up and down the coast. It was also thought by recfishings peak body Recfishwest that this would be the best time of year to have minimal impact on the holiday period's while still allowing other species like whiting, squid, lobster and crab's to be targeted which are quite prolific in spring. There was at the time a 100% reallocation of the metro area from Lancelin to Binningup to the recreational sector so no commercial fishing for demersals occurs in that region. We are halfway into a twenty year period of rebuilding the stock's back to sustainable levels and early signs are that there is some positive recovery of some species in the demersal sweet so it is good to see that these reductions in effort are working so all our kid's can enjoy a fish in the future, hope that goes some way to explaining how we are monitored and controlled differently in each sector and it certainly isn't a free for all in the commercial sector as some would suggest.
