22.01.2022 A kookaburra at sunset. I've been wanting to video a kookaburra laughing but haven't managed it so far. This one made a little chuckle just as I was setting up...but then stayed silent. It had the last laugh. Have a great weekend. Martin Puchert
20.01.2022 A pair of black-faced cookoo-shrikes. Listen to examples of their calls here: https://ebird.org/species/bkfcus1?siteLanguage=en_AU Black-faced Cuckoo-shrikes may mate with the same partner each year.
20.01.2022 A white-faced heron looking over the Cooks River near Gough Whitlam Park.
20.01.2022 Tawny frogmouth owl! Thanks for sharing Nigel Correction: it’s not actually an owl. The correct name is simply a tawny frogmouth
19.01.2022 Stickybeaks. I’ve noticed currawongs often poking their beaks into the holes in these bricks, probably to find grubs or have a drink.
19.01.2022 Dusky moorhens at Tempe Wetlands. Tempe wetlands used to be a shale quarry in the 1920s, a greyhound racing track in the 1940s, and then a rubbish tip until the 1970s. In 2004 Marrickville Council converted the area into parklands and wetlands. Local volunteer group Tempe Birdos meets monthly to survey bird life.
17.01.2022 Our backyard grevilleas and banksias have just been visited by a group of yellow-tailed black cockatoos. The noisy miners are going nuts. This is our first sighting here (Campsie opposite the racecourse).
17.01.2022 Does this resonate with you?
17.01.2022 Great to see so many rainbow lorikeets in one tree. Quite a cacophony. The eucalyptus blossoms must have been to their liking.
16.01.2022 Another mysterious creature, any ideas?
14.01.2022 A striated heron at the little bird sanctuary at Boat Harbour, Hurlstone Park
13.01.2022 One of two fledgling tawny frogmouths, now out of the nest. Photo taken yesterday by Kathleen Connell - thanks for sharing!
13.01.2022 Ever wondered what a baby pelican looks like? This one was incubated from an abandoned egg.
13.01.2022 Lots of currawong calls this morning. They’ve been very vocal during the rainy weather and seem to be congregating more than normal (but maybe I’m noticing them more because of the calls). Does anyone know a currawong expert who can explain what they’re up to?
13.01.2022 Different beaks, different techniques. The white-faced heron must have incredible eyesight to catch so many worms (watch closely). The royal spoonbill was moving vigorously but I'm not sure what it caught. These two stayed near each other as they moved around, probably for safety. At Landing Lights wetlands.
11.01.2022 A grey butcherbird being fed by a parent. I love the way the chick makes a drama of begging for food, despite being as big as the parent. In the second shot the parent keeps the food for itself and the baby doesn't complain. Young butcherbirds are known to stay around for a year and help their parents raise more chicks the following season. Have a great day Martin Puchert
09.01.2022 Galahs are a well-known Australian bird but not a common sight around the Cooks River. These were mingling with crested pigeons, starlings, and noisy miners at Waterworth Park, Earlwood.
08.01.2022 A nest of bees on the side of a big casurina tree. Some of them are clearly arriving with a load of yellow pollen. It's like a busy airport. Bees are constantly taking off and landing. These are probably western honey bees (Apis millifera), the most common of honey bees worldwide. Many thanks to Joshua Moloney for pointing out the nest.
05.01.2022 Two great cormorants slowly waking up. They're sitting on the floating boom litter boom at Hurlstone Park. Various large waterbirds use the boom as a refuge from predators.
04.01.2022 Across the river from the tawny frogmouths this morning, a big group (6 or more) of currawongs were going nuts at a channel-billed cuckoo. Couldn’t get a clear picture, unfortunately.
03.01.2022 The first moonwalk was 51 years ago today. These images were taken a year ago along the Cooks River.
03.01.2022 A little pied cormorant, Boat Harbour, Hurlstone Park. I took video of a little pied cormorant at exactly the same spot in 2019. I wonder if it's the same one.
03.01.2022 Crested pigeons at Waterworth Park, Earlwood. When I was a kid I called them "party hat birds" because the crest looked to me like a party hat. The trill sound they make as they take off is actually created by two special narrow wing feathers. It's believed that the noise communicates danger to the flock. No other related pigeon species has these unusually narrow wing feathers.
03.01.2022 Comical Cooks River cockatoo trying to untie a shoelace at Boat Harbour, Hurlstone Park. Thanks Kathleen Connell for sharing :)
02.01.2022 Outside my kitchen window
01.01.2022 A flock of little black cormorants hunting together and moving up the river, near Lees Park, Ashbury
