21.01.2022 Today is a very significant day in Cooktowns history. The 19th June 1770 was the first recorded act of reconciliation between the local Bama and Cook and his men following a skirmish over some turtles. Today at 4pm we re-enacted that important moment at Reconciliation Rocks in Cooktown.

20.01.2022 Good luck Mau Power at the NIMA awards tonight!! We will be watching and can’t wait to see you on stage at Cooktown & Cape York Expo 2021 next June 12th. Xxx #NIMA2020

08.01.2022 Cooktown & Cape York Expo 2021 - The Rising Tide The Rising Tide tagline was suggested by members of the local Indigenous community (Bama), who wanted to acknowledge the importance of The Rising Tide in daily life in Cape York. Captain Cook waited for the rising tide to float his ship off the reef. Cook waited for the rising tide to leave the mouth of the Endeavour River. ... The local Bama know that the rising tide is the best time to hunt and gather and it brings new life. It also alludes to the raising of their status by telling to the world the story of the first recorded act of reconciliation in this country. The Guugu Yimithirr word gangarru (kangaroo) is now spoken around the world. It is reflective of the need for the community to rise up and prosper economically and socially in a post-pandemic world. Its about doing away with the old and bringing in the new by rising with the tide. The two cultures of Cooktown will rise up in presenting the Expo 2021, proud of these stories, to share them on a national and international stage and put Cooktown and Cape York firmly on the map.

03.01.2022 From the Cairns Post. Nice to see support for this commemoration yesterday.

03.01.2022 Did you know that Cooktown was a thriving town in the 1870's - 1890's when the Palmer River Gold Rush began, just one hundred years after Cook's visit in 1770? Cooktown was first settled as a seaport in 1873 and in 1876, Cooktown's population of around 4000 was supporting a workforce on the Palmer River goldfields of some 15,000 European and Chinese miners. On October 25th 1873 the steam ship Leichhardt arrived with building materials. Officials and prospectors to establish... the township of "Cooks Town". Prospectors poured in from everywhere and the town grew quickly. The town boasted 65 hotels, 20 eating houses and 32 general stores. By 1885 Cooktown's population exceeded 4,000 including Irish, English, German and hundreds of Chinese. Its port was widely regarded as 'one of the finest in the colonies'. The volume of traffic through the port in the years 1875-77 was second only to Brisbane (among Queensland ports), with even more impressive was the value of gold exports shipped through Cooktown from the Palmer River goldfields during the mid 1870s - between 1874 and 1877 some 839,000 ounces of gold, valued at nearly 3 million, passed through Cooktown! Unfortunately once the gold was depleted Cooktown's economic importance was reduced and by the turn of the century the population was barely 2,000, but with the growing pearling, tin and cattle industries the town managed to survive with its town status. During the Expo 2021 we will honour this part of Cooktown's history with the 'Gold Delivery' reenactment on Saturday 19 June 2021.
