24.01.2022 The FNQIB Wayne King Memorial Medal of Medals was contested in tricky breezy conditions by the lucky group of players who had either won or finished 2nd in the Monthly Medals played during the testing 2020 season. Back to back champ Graham Burton was the firm favourite with the likes of Wal Welsh, Steve Butler and Rick Butler amongst others vieing for the coveted prize. The not so dark horse of the competition Jamie Dobson amassed a wonderful score on the testing white course... with a nett 65, 37 points and with a bit more thought put into shot selection on his approaches he could have easily shot a 61 or 62 but those errors bit him hard, Paul Humphries who went out early with Chris Hatton and Wal Welsh came home from the 18th with a unbeatable MoM score of nett 63, 38 points to take home the title, the nearest to the pins went to John McArthur on 2/11 & 9/18 with Jamie Dobson picking up 14, Paul Humphries also won the side bet. Next Saturday is a Race to the Bay Triple Point Top Team Title Ambrose event from the Red Tees, teams to be drawn from the hat. See more

24.01.2022 May is too crowded, we will ask for the last week in August as a regular slot

23.01.2022 RACE TO THE BAY 2020..........The Countdown. 5 rounds left to decide the 2020 Champ 3rd IN THE RACE is RICK BUTLER, 7250 points, the 2019 champ is 500 points behind Ryan, but has the distinct advantage that he will be on board for every round, Rick has found his mojo in the last month, will the changing of shafts from Regular to Stiff hinder or enhance his chances....only time will tell.

22.01.2022 RACE TO THE BAY 2020..........The Countdown. 5 rounds left to decide the 2020 Champ 5th IN THE RACE is PAUL HUMPHRIES on 6270 points, he is 1500 points away from first place and the only other player with a fighting chance to run a place. Paul’s strengths are his short game and his prowess with the flat stick.

20.01.2022 This Saturday is the FNQIB Wayne King Medal of Medals, tee off is 10am from the White Tees

20.01.2022 So what do we call the team of Sam And Wal......WAM

18.01.2022 Never ever forget the loose impediment rule, it could cost you a shot! Matthew Wolff was charging up the U.S. Open leaderboard on Saturday at Winged Foot making five birdies in his first 11 holes and nothing could stop him. But a divot tried to. Wolff’s drive found the rough on the par-5 12th hole, but when he approached the ball he saw a divot from earlier in the week resting up against it. He now had two choices: play the ball as it lies and hope the divot doesn’t affect the ball flight, or try to remove the divot. However, the divot similar to leaves or branches is a loose impediment. Wolff was clear to remove it, but if he happened to move the ball while in the process, then it’d be a one-stroke penalty and he’d have to replace the ball.

15.01.2022 Don’t forget, tomorrow is the first round of the Ambrose Championships.

15.01.2022 How close can you get, Wal shows Steve the line, now they just have to get the pace right

14.01.2022 Revised FNQ Insurance Brokers Race to the Bay Ladder.......Al Burton is now in 4th not 5th

14.01.2022 With BMUP (Black Mountain UnPlugged) happening and a cluster of members working away keeping our roads in top shape, it was decided at the last minute to postpone the Ambrose Championships until 28/11 and 5/12/2020 weekends to enable all members to be available for the event, instead we had an intimate gathering of a dozen players contesting the first of 2 Ambrose events, Team Jadick (Jayde & Rick) came in as clubhouse leaders with 41 points with Team Samben (Sam & Ben) very ...close behind on 40 points, but not to be denied were Team Waleve (Wal & Steve) who had finally come into some good form but still needing to par the last to come home in front with 42 points. The Jackpot hole on the 5th of $180 was finally won, but was split 4 ways between Sam, Ben, Steve and Wal with Rick & Jayde missing out by a millimetre to join them, the side bet was won by Steve and Wal of $50 each, the Nearest to the Pins went to Wal Welsh for 2/11 and John McArthur got 14, and 9/18 remained unmolested. Next week is another Ambrose Event from the White Tees, name to be drawn from the Hat. See more

13.01.2022 This Rule applies to all Cooktown Players with our always thicker than U.S Open rough. Luckily, there are a number of legal ways to search for and identify your ball. Rule 7.1 in the Rules of Golf covers how to fairly search for your ball, while 7.3 covers how to identify it. RULES jordan spieth swings... Lost ball in U.S. Open rough? Here’s how to proceed under the rules Rule 7.1 states that players may fairly search for the ball by taking reasonable actions to find and identify it. These actions include moving or bending anything that impedes your ability to identify your ball. And if you can’t identify it when taking these actions, you are allowed to lift the ball to identify it. If a ball might be yours but you cannot identify it as it lies, you may lift the ball to identify it, says Rule 7.3. But the spot of the ball must first be marked, and the ball must not be cleaned more than needed to identify it. If the ball is your ball, or another players ball, you must replace the ball as near as possible to its original spot. The only caveat to this rule is that you are not allowed to clean your ball when identifying it.

13.01.2022 RACE TO THE BAY 2020..........The Countdown. 5 rounds left to decide the 2020 Champ 4th IN THE RACE is SAM GODFREY ROBERTS, 6950 points, Sam absolutely monsters the ball off the tee and his short game is very sound, it’s only a matter of time and luck before he owns the course record, This lefty was shaping up as a great chance to win it all this year but Family and Business matters in Dantoria have stopped Sam’s charge, this weekend will be his final round for the year.

13.01.2022 RACE TO THE BAY 2020..........The Countdown. 5 rounds left to decide the 2020 Champ LEADING THE PACK...WAL WELSH 7770 points, the 2018 champ is in his happy place......in front, renowned as a great clutch putter and rarely strays from the cut stuff, can Wal join Steve Butler as a 2 time champion.

12.01.2022 RACE TO THE BAY 2020..........The Countdown. 5 rounds left to decide the 2020 Champ 2nd IN THE PACK...RYAN SPERRING 7750 points, Only 20 points behind Wal, this has been a breakout year for Ryan and is the type of player that once he gets a sniff he never gives in and he is a master in getting out of trouble, his Achilles Heal is the fact that he works away maintaining our roads up north and may only get 1 or 2 games out of 5 to knock Wal out of 1st.

12.01.2022 The Man with the Scissors has visited the club with new White Tee Handicaps for Dayna Law and Graham Burton.........you have both dropped a shot to the course,DL 28, GB 9.

06.01.2022 Red Tee Ambrose Event tomorrow, teams from the hat, don’t forget a towel and umbrella......could be wet but less than 2 metres so course will be fine to play

04.01.2022 The November Medal has been run and won by Paul Humphries with a tidy score of nett 65, in 2nd place was Graham Burton nett 68 with Rick Butler 3rd with nett 69, nearest to the pins went to Rick Butler 2/11 and 14 with Al Burton snagging 9/18. The jackpot hole and the Birdies nest were left untouched. Paul Humphries also collected the side bet cash. Next week is the Medal of Medals from the White tees, those players who did not make the cut, normal stroke play applies, this is a triple point Race to the Bay event. In Race to the Bay News, Wal Welsh still leads with 7860 pts, Ryan Sperring has a tenuous hold on 2nd with 7810 pts and Rick Butler 7540 pts picked up 210 points for running 3rd and 2 NTPs at 40 points each to get within 270 pts of 2nd place, the final 4 rounds should ensure a very tight finish.

04.01.2022 The days event was the last instalment of the fortnight of Ambrose in lieu of the scheduled Championships which have been postponed until the end of the season. When the names were drawn from the hat the 2 players everyone didn’t want paired up were Wal Welsh and Sam Godfrey Roberts as they are the reigning Sunday Pineapple Ambrose Champs, anyways the golf gods decided that the rest of the field needed to be taught a stern lesson and decree Wal and Sam a pair (a pair of what’...s, were not sure) they dismantled the field with a very comfortable 43 points 58 nett to best Steve Butler & Paul Humphries who came second on a countback with 40 points 61 nett from Dayna Laws and Rick Butler also on 40 points 61 nett. Wal and Sam shared the side bet of $70, the nearest to the pins went to Wal for 2/11, Dayna who hit a wonderful shot that must have gone very close to holing out on 14 thus claiming that hole and Rick Butler took home 9/18. Next Saturday is the Captains v Presidents Stableford from the red tees.....teams will be chosen like for like handicap basis. See more

03.01.2022 NOVEMBER MEDAL this Saturday 14th November

03.01.2022 Latest Race to the Bay Ladder & Points Spread

03.01.2022 There’s a little bit of magic happening in Wal Welsh’s game, the stars have aligned for 2 weeks in a row with last week, Wal Welsh being paired with Steve Butler and Supering up and winning which pushed him way up the ladder into 4th place, so when Wal drew Sam Godfrey Roberts this week he decided to throw caution to the wind and use another Super up card and as luck and skill would have it he won again and picked up 1320 point to overtake Ryan Sperring the year long leader.......and now the whips are cracking.

02.01.2022 2 Red Hot Ambrose Teams tied for 1st place today in ordinary weather, who won the day? Who missed out?

02.01.2022 With 12 rounds left to go the Cooktown Race to the Bay is really starting to heat up with some big moves made today by Sam Godfrey Roberts and Wal Welsh, Sam and Ben Sperring played a Super up card each which is worth 1000 points for a win and after some very anxious moment they held onto 3rd spot which gave them 700 points each to push Sam into 2nd and Ben from 9th to 8th overall, Wal Welsh also Played a Super Card and teammate Steve Butler a double up card to win the day and in doing so Wal collected maximum points, catapulting him into 4th spot from 8th with Steve in 7th overall, Ryan Sperring still holds a great lead of 810 points but his huge lead of over 2000 points is being eaten away rather rapidly.
