25.01.2022 Do you want to be happier? Although Australians enjoy a higher standard of living than that enjoyed by generations many years ago the incidence of depression is increasing and has become a major health priority for the future. Happiness according to various studies is somewhat genetically dependant (approx 50%) and about 10% due to environmental causes (such as your health, wealth, marital status, whether you have children etc). It is generally surprising to people that only ...10% of our happiness is actually attributable to environmental. After winning the lottery the baseline happiness of a person does significantly increase however by the end of 12 months the lottery winners happiness tends to drop back to their baseline happiness they had before they won the lottery. People who have become paraplegic have a significant drop in their level of happiness however their happiness levels also tend to go back to a little below their baseline after 12-18 months. Our minds adapt to events that are both good and bad. Essentially if you surveyed a group of people and tried to test how happy they are, environmental causes such as their marital status, wealth etc would generally only make a difference of 10% in their scores. 40% of our happiness though is due to what we can call intentional factors. People who actively develop strong relationships with their family and friends will be happier than those people that don’t prioritize their family and friends. The strength of your social supports has been shown to be the most influential factor in your overall level of happiness. So make sure you keep in contact with your family and friends- pick up the phone and say hello to one of your old friends this week. Other things that can dramatically influence your happiness are whether you exercise or not, meditate and have an attitude of gratitude ie you are generally grateful for what happens in your life If you are interested in reading more about what influences your happiness pick up these books from which most of the above information is sourced- The How of Happiness by Sonya Lyubomirsky and Before Happiness by Shawn Arcor. If you don’t have time to read you can also get these books on Audible by Amazon and then you can play them to yourself via headphones from your mobile phone. There is also a TED talk by Shawn Arcor. If you want to see what your current happiness level is try this test by copying and pasting the link below: https://www.theguardian.com//take-the-oxford-happiness-que Dr Dominic Bannerman will be hosting a talk on Happiness/Depression at Coolangatta Medical Centre on Tuesday 9/4/19 from 530pm- 630pm.
