Before retiring from his academic career he was Head of the Wagga Wagga Campus of Charles Sturt University and a former Chair of the Crafts Board of the Australia Council. He is author of four books, has had more than 10 solo exhibitions and participated in more than 50 se...lected and curated exhibitions. "I grew up in Dickens country, that part of Kent that when I was a child was rural, when summers were long and railways ran with smoky coal engines puffing clouds of steam and hot smoke that had a particular and special smell that lingered long after the train had passed. As a student in Rochester (Kent), I drew many of the historical buildings, the Cathedral, with its Norman architectural beginnings, the Keep of the Norman castle built to guard the river crossing and Restoration house (Satis House the home of Miss Havisham in Charles Dickens' Great Expectations). Dickens wrote two endings to the novel (I must say I prefer the original ending over the seemingly second happy ending where Pip and Estella wander off together). 09.01.2022 Featured: The lovers, Peter Sunaklis, mixed media collage, 40x50cm framed, $480 I began unschooled art practice in 1970, subsequently studying drawing and painting for roughly 4 years with Desiderius Orban, (1884-1986) in the late 70’s early 80’s in Sydney, my only formal art tuition. Aside from teaching his students how to look/see (life drawing) and stressing a sense of adventure and freedom in following our intuition (painting). An important lesson he instilled in my outl...ook regarding art practice which has stayed with me all these years later, is poetry. I shall explain this with a short story, much abbreviated relating to Orban’s own formative years as a young artist in the early years, of 20th century Paris. In which he claimed to be the handsome young Hungarian as described in Gertrude Steins autobiography of her years in Paris, ‘The Autobiography of Alice B Tolkas’ published in the 1930’s, which details Stein’s circle in Paris of modern artists, writers, theatre people, dancers, musicians and composers, et cetera, including Picasso and Matisse. At one such soriee, Desiderius related to me that Picasso was heard to say: so many artists today have forgotten poetry in their art and it’s the most important thing.
