23.01.2022 When you have a child who doesn’t LOVE exercising, but they really need movement breaks to self-regulate, use something motivating for them to collect on a treasure hunt obstacle course! (Extra easy if you have stairs ) one of my little men loves Scarface Claw, so I made him a puzzle to collect! EEEEOOOOOWWWWFFFTTTSSSS!!!

23.01.2022 Need a motivating and fun way to work on those tricky letters? Turn writing practice into play! #paediatricot

22.01.2022 Kids got way too much energy? Plan an obstacle course! Ready, set, GO!!

22.01.2022 WOO HOO! Thanks NDIS!!

22.01.2022 Lets make dog treats!! Making #dogtreats is a fantastic way to encourage fussy eaters to interact with messy food! If we want to tackle #fussyeating we need to first encourage kids to feel safe and comfortable looking at, smelling, interacting with and touching food - before we move on to tasting! Making dog biscuits is a great way to do this, as there is absolutely no expectation to eat the food as it’s for dogs! This significantly reduces anxiety and makes touching food whi...ch would normally be SUPER GROSS fun! Now, you can by all means eat these, but it’s probably more yummy for a dog. The mixture forms a great dough which you can mould into any shape you want! You can also substitute the carrot for any dog-friendly vegetable that you would like your kids to feel more comfortable with. Blend up some broccoli or kale, grate zucchini, chop mushrooms - the options are endless! Get your kids to help with the mixing, peeling and measuring to develop their #finemotorskills and finger muscles. Plus, you’re also working on maths goals by talking about measurements (might be useful if online learning returns ). Get messy and have fun. Rufus sure enjoyed his presents from my clients!! 18.01.2022 Happy Easter from Cool Kids OT! Stay safe and eat treats and send your love to the people you care about however you can (I hear carrier pigeons are all the rave)

17.01.2022 Hey guys! I’ve been using drawing as a brain-break and as a way to manage my anxiety, so get ready for hand-drawn resources! Here are some easy to do at home #heavywork activities. These are great to do when kids (or adults) are feeling a bit anxious or have a bit too much energy. They are a great way to help re-focus in between online learning sessions and whenever you feel a bit out of sorts! Remember to chat to your kids about what kind of things YOU do when you feel worried or sad. It’s good for kids to know that grown ups feel the same way that they do sometimes and it can help to give them ideas about how they can regulate their own bodies. #selfregulation

17.01.2022 If anyone is looking for somewhere to do face-to-face therapy during the lockdown - Kerri-anne Telford Paediatric OT has you covered!! I might be a bit biased (heh heh ), but the team over there is fantastic and they have three therapy rooms BURSTING with sensory motor equipment.

16.01.2022 This isn’t me pooping, it’s me shooting out my love for you all!!!! I just wanted to remind you that you are all absolutely amazing and awe-inspiring. Be proud of fact that you are waking up each morning, feeding and looking after your kids and getting stuff done and kicking butt. This is a totally new and cruddy time and I literally don’t know how you do it all! I feel like I’m exhausted all of the time and my productivity is as low as my enjoyment for avocado (hint - VE...RY LOW) and I only have a little dog to look after!! Please find some time to give yourself at least a tiny bit of self care. I know that as parents of a child/children with special needs free time is virtually impossible to come by, but you are so important and you need to make sure that you save a bit of love for yourself. Sending out all of my love and don’t worry - we will get through this!! If you need anything I’m always virtually here. See more

13.01.2022 Here is a great list of books to start the conversation about racism and #blm with your kids. It can be pretty overwhelming to talk about and as a society we are raised to kind of ignore this issue, so it’s time that we take a stand and educate ourselves and others, so that we can start making a real difference.

13.01.2022 You are all working so hard to keep up with work, school and all of the normal household demands (on top of the stress of living through an actual worldwide pandemic which has totally changed our way of life). Please don’t let the pressure from others to be THE BEST HOME SCHOOL PARENT/CARET EVER take over. Just take it day by day. Children learn best via play and real life situations. Can’t get the maths worksheet done? Talk about how many carrot slices you want for dinner ...oh Dad is having 6 more than me, how many altogether?. Let’s cut up this pizza! If I cut it like this, how many slices do I have? Go for a walk and chat about odd and even mailbox numbers (this idea came from one of the wonderful parents I work with). Get kids involved in chores - carrying a load of washing is a great heavy work activity! And hanging up washing with pegs is a great fine motor task (you can get them to do the socks if you’re *ahem* a bit anal like me with your laundry placement). Be kind to yourselves. You’re doing an amazing job - this is something that we have never experienced before and as long as we stay safe, I call that a win! See more

12.01.2022 This is beautiful https://youtu.be/DA_SsZFYw0w

12.01.2022 Hi everyone! So in response to the current Covid-19 pandemic, I have decided that it is safest for everyone if I move into Teletherapy, which is a fancy term for therapy/meetings/training over video calls. Once I have set up my system with Coviu I will be sending details with how to contact me. Thank you for your understanding and support. Stay safe everyone!

10.01.2022 COOL!!!! You can download a FREE digital book all about the rona! Very cute pictures and lots of easy to understand information for kids (and maaaaaaybe some adults). It can be really scary when you don’t understand what’s going on and remember, even if we don’t talk about stuff around them, kids pick up on our anxiety! This is a great way to start the conversation and explain what is happening, without it being scary - knowledge is power! https://nosycrow.com//released-today-free-information-bo/

07.01.2022 Times are tough and it’s easy for us all to become super stressed. One of the hardest (REALLY FLIPPING HARD SOMETIMES) things that we need to do when our kiddos are upset is to remain calm.

06.01.2022 Well, it’s that time again unfortunately. Time for us all to stay safe and stay at home. I know that this has been an absolutely horrible year for most people and I am so, so sorry that I will not be able to come and visit yet. But I need to do the right thing and stay at home. No amount of therapy is worth transferring this virus and risking lives. I will still be here and ready to chat via screen whenever you need me, we will just have to wait for in-person therapy. Absence makes the heart grow fonder I guess?? stay safe and healthy!!

06.01.2022 Need an easy way to get some #vestibularinput because you can’t do handstands or cartwheels and you don’t have a swing? Hang off the side of your bed! I LOVE doing this at the end of a long day (or in the middle!) because afterwards I feel like a brand new person and totally #revived . P.s. plz ignore the re-growth, it’s only going to get worse

05.01.2022 Another fun way to get used to touching yucky foods like celery and carrot (or whatever foods your kids avoid) - cut them up into small pieces and make some art! By using familiar and safe food as well as the scaaaary yucky ones you’re providing a space for your child to interact with food that would normally cause anxiety, without the pressure of eating it. Remember - improving #fussyeating is a long process and we need to take little steps. It’s all about desensitising ...your child to these foods to reduce anxiety. Slowly over time these foods become less anxiety provoking and it makes eating them seem less scary. Be patient - as a fussy child myself (I was VERY creative with how I disposed of food) I know how stressful being confronted with yucky food is. But gradually, over the years I got a lot better! (Although I still think avocado is super gross) See more

03.01.2022 Look look look!!!! Family-based respite!!

02.01.2022 Fine motor work doesn’t have to be boring - it can be fun, magical and pretty! Cutting out circles is boooooooring - let’s make a magic bubble wand! (Magic not guaranteed) want to practice letters but also draw a princess castle at the same time?? Letter formation practice doesn’t have to be boring - or make sense! It can be silly and creative and fun!
