21.01.2022 ‘Princess’ by name, princess by nature! Today’s Wombat Wednesday post is all about one commanding young lady. Princess was a rescue joey (mum had been hit and ...killed by a car near Jindabyne) - thankfully the young joey was uninjured in the accident. Weighing in at 391 grams upon arrival (she was a pinky so unfurred), she has thrived thanks to the care received by one of our experienced wombat carers. Today she’s a hefty 1.1 kg and now shares life with her wombat joey buddy (aptly) named ‘Queenie’. This royal duo will certainly be featured more in weeks to come! Stay tuned!

13.01.2022 Things you need to know for this year. *NSW Resorts* Guest will not be able to visit Kosciuszko National Park (KNP) for the purpose of traditional snow-play typ...e activities in 2020. There will not be accessible areas near roads, carparks and resorts that are large enough for safe physical-distancing during snow-play. Tobogganing, sledding and snow-tubing is prohibited throughout Kosciuszko National Park in 2020, regardless of the visitor’s method of transport. There are no accessible areas in Kosciuszko National Park that allow these activities to be safely undertaken in accordance with the current COVID-19 physical-distancing requirements. Visitors are welcome to the Kosciuszko National Park for on-snow sporting activities if the visitor will be: -Skiing / snowboarding on the resort with a valid, pre-purchased list pass, or -Undertaking on-snow back country activities. Visitors will need to register a Trip Intention Form (TIF) with NPWS prior to their arrival. Examples of on-snow back country activities, which can be undertaken after a TIF is lodged, include snow shoeing, cross country skiing, back country skiing and back country snowboarding. -Under the KNP PoM groups of more than 20 will need a consent for backcountry activities. -We recommend that people going backcountry book with a licenced tour operator and that they carry a Personal Locator Beacon. www.snowsearch.com.au

10.01.2022 With so many communities being DEVASTATED by FIRES or DYING SLOWLY with the on going DROUGHT, we thought we would put the call out to people who would normally ...travel overseas for their yearly holidays to put their passports away, just for 12 months, to help support their fellow Aussies. Spending holidays in these communities would provide them with a much needed boost and its a great way to see that your money is going directly to the people who need it. See more

09.01.2022 The Snowy Mountains/Snowy Monaro region is on high alert tomorrow as weather conditions become extreme and the growing bush fires advance towards key townships ...and mountainous, vulnerable areas. If you spot fire affected wildlife please call Agriculture and Animal Services Functional Area (ASFA) Hotline: 1800 814 647 or LAOKO’s hotline on 6456 1313 for assistance. Please stay safe and do not put yourself in any danger.

06.01.2022 LAOKO Emergency Wildlife Rescue - call us on 6456 1313. This long weekend, with Covid-19 restrictions lifted, we expect to see an increase in tourist traffic on... our roads. We know wildlife fatalities are inevitable. LAOKO provides a 24/7 volunteer wildlife rescue service for injured or orphaned native wildlife here in the Snowy Mountains region. We can assist with emergency joey rescue (when mum is killed usually as a result of traffic accident) and euthanasia of an injured native animal if required. Most of our wildlife are nocturnal and are active around dawn, dusk and at night time, often grazing roadside. Slow down at these times to avoid a collision with wildlife which can have many unpleasant consequences. Besides leaving an injured or orphaned animal, it is often upsetting for the driver and passengers, expensive to repair your vehicle and potentially ruin your holiday. If you do hit an animal and you stop to check it/remove from the road (which by law you are required to do), please ensure your own safety roadside. Stop where it is safe to do so, well off the road, with your hazard lights on. Don’t put your own life in danger. Your awareness will help keep our wildlife safe and ensure your time off is hassle free. Drive safely!

06.01.2022 Animal Welfare League NSW has been deployed to Cooma to help support animals in the area who need urgent assistance due to the bushfire crisis. Further updates ...to follow.
