22.01.2022 ***STATEMENT FROM CWA OF NSW IN RELATION TO THE APPROVAL OF THE NARRABRI GAS PROJECT*** The CWA of NSW is today totally disillusioned with state planning proces...ses after the Independent Planning Commission’s approval of the Santos Narrabri Gas Project. CWA of NSW CEO Danica Leys stated that it beggars belief how a project requiring 134 strict conditions can even proceed to approval. If a project needs this many conditions, it’s an indication that they need to go back to the drawing board. It doesn’t stack up. We’re concerned that compliance on conditions is severely lacking in any case. We’ve seen it in the past with mining and other extractive projects. These companies get the green light and off they go, there’s no looping back to ensure all of these conditions are upheld into the future. Rural communities once again are left with the impacts. We’re pleased to see some requirements in the IPC report relating to waste management and salt reuse or disposal. This is a significant concern and we’ll be keeping a close eye on where Santos proceed in this regard. However other impacts such as groundwater and impacts on farming activities, remain as significant concerns. We believe that the insurance issue is also yet to be adequately addressed. The Chief Scientist has directed the NSW Government to fix it, the Upper House inquiry said fix it before any gas projects can proceed. It hasn’t been addressed and yet here we are. We know the economic impacts have been inflated, we know there are still no proper assurances on the environmental impacts. With such significant community objection and now an approval with a huge amount of conditions our members are increasingly disillusioned with the whole process.

21.01.2022 Overnight care to acute emergency patients will not be provided at the Julia Creek Multi-Purpose Health Service from today, with only two beds available for age...d care patients. The change is due to lack of nurse staff in Julia Creek, unable to be filled due to border closures and a key staff member currently in quarantine. Staff will now be on-call at night, with patients needing overnight care to be transported to Cloncurry, Mount Isa or Townsville. North West Hospital and Health Service spokesperson Michelle Garner said that the facility averages one overnight patient per day, which may be able to receive at-home care during the downgrading. "The changes will be reviewed as soon as borders reopen and we can find staff," Ms Garner said.

17.01.2022 Four or five women elected to Coonamble Shire Council next September is the desired outcome of a campaign b...y the NSW Office of Local Government, while Collaborate NSW would like to see about three councillors of Aboriginal heritage being elected. The community of Coonamble Local Government Area has two wingsmen and womenand flight is impossible for any bird until both wings are equally developed. The 2016 Census identified that Coonamble’s population is 49.7% male and 50.3% female. Of the current seven councillors comprising Coonamble Shire Council, two are women, that is, just under 30%. Similarly, about one-third of the population identify as having Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander heritage. While neither gender nor race should be the main factor for a voter determining his or her ballot in the next Local Government elections in September 2021, the presence of an increased number of women and people of Aboriginal heritage on the ballot paper ensures the voter can elect as varied a council as possible that has immediate access to key values and perspectives held by the community it represents. The campaign by the Office of Local Government makes available a series of inspiring videos, featuring current and former female councillors speaking about their positive experiences in Local Government and their proudest achievements for their communities. These women speak about how they overcame the real-life challenges of balancing family and work commitments. Materials to inspire confidence in women to stand for election to Local Government in 2021 are available on the Office of Local Government website (https://www.olg.nsw.gov.au//women-in-local-government-sta/), with similar materials for Aboriginals and Torres Strait Islanders is available on the Collaborate NSW website (http://collaboratensw.org/for-com/stand-for-your-community/). Key dates for anyone considering running for election are 26 July 2021, when electoral rolls close and candidate nominations open, and 4 August 2021, when candidate nominations close. :

15.01.2022 Coonamble Australia Day Celebrations are tomorrow from 8am at the Coonamble Showground Pavilion. Please join us to congratulate the amazing achievements of the deserving nominees for 2021.
