25.01.2022 Thank you to all our families and educators who donated to WWF to support the Australian bush fire emergency. Together, we raised $269.85! This donation will go towards care for our injured wildlife, and when the fires clear, help restore the forest homes our koalas and other animals have lost

24.01.2022 January is always known for people Cleansing their homes and sheds before the new year starts. In Playground to Plate we like to practise what we preach and today we RECYCLED our plastic pots and all the plastic bags from our organic soil and mulch that we use in the gardens. ... Drop off your waste to Banyule Waste Management Center, East Brunswick Transfer Station or Moonee Valley Transfer Station. Bulleen Art and Garden accept your plastic potting mix and mulch bags. Happy Recycling

24.01.2022 The first BIG Harvest from our 3 year old Olive Trees at Coonans Hill ELC. They certainly didnt disappoint this year! Thank you to the people who volunteered their time to help me today ... We cant wait to taste them in a few months and we hope the children will enjoy them for lunch or afternoon tea.

23.01.2022 As part of our ongoing mission to be a sustainable centre, our Broad Beans room engaged in an up-cycle project. The children and educators had a discussion about how they could upcycle fabric scraps and what better way than to make a fabric bowl! The children were given a pair of scissors each and a small piece of fabric to cut up into squares and placed it into a large bowl. A bowl was covered in plastic wrap, where the children used glue to paste the fabric - paper mache style! Once the bowl had dried, the plastic was peeled off and the bowl stayed in shape, hence making a fabric bowl! What a fantastic way to up-cycle

23.01.2022 Look what Rachel found in the Garden today! Can you guess how much these Zucchinis weigh? You can make a Gold coin donation for a guess at the centre. Money raised will go to the Australian Childhood Foundation. Whoever guesses the closest wins a little produce pack from the garden Good luck!

21.01.2022 Well done and Thank you to the children in Playground to Plate that helped Plant a Tree for Planet Arks School national tree day this week. Planet Ark have been planting trees all over Australia on this special day since 1996 and have planted over 24 million Trees. Trees provide us with Fresh Air, Food and Shelter. Being amongst them and in nature provides us with a positive state of mental health and well being ... All the families can visit Shore Reserve to see the Eucalyptus Trees we planted in the small playground area. Look for the stakes with red paint on the top. A huge Thank you to Basil from the City of Moreland for providing the trees and locations. If you want to get involved visit https://treeday.planetark.org/get-involved/community for Tree Planting in your area Sunday 28th July.

21.01.2022 Holy Basil or better known as Tulsi is a sacred plant grown in every house in India. They are planted near the front door so when the wind blows it fills the house with the aroma. Its medicinal benefits are to heal a sore throat and to ward off any colds or flus. You can add the leaves to your tea or to a salad to enjoy. We will be using the leaves in our Summer Salad next week in Playground to Plate. Come and visit the plant growing in our gardens to have a smell and see all the bees buzzing around the flowers.

20.01.2022 The Bushfires across Australia as we know have devastatingly impacted countless Australians and Australian Wildlife. We are working with the talented Narrelle Cahill, our Centre Manager at our soon to open sister centre in Fitzroy who is an experienced sewer, to sew pouches for injured wildlife that have been affected by the devastating fires across Australia this Summer. How can you help? Please drop off any left over fabrics or material that you have at home to Coonans Hill... ELC by Friday 10 January to be sewn into pouches that will hopefully help our injured wildlife recover. These fabrics must be clean and in good condition. Narrelle and her team of experienced sewers will hold a sewing bee. The pouches will then be donated to a Wildlife Sanctuary in Diamond Creek that will work to distribute these pouches as necessary to the areas across Australia that need them most. Thank you so much for your help and our thoughts and prayers are with everyone affected during this very difficult time.

20.01.2022 Exciting News! As of July 1st Moreland City Council are taking fruit and vegetable scraps in your green bin. Over 50% of household waste is food Organics and fruit and vegetables that are in landfill give off a harmful methane gas that affects climate change. ... The council initiative compliments our Playground to Plate principals of REFUSING to add to landfill, REUSING the waste and RECYCLING it into compost to enrich the soils at our local parks, gardens and schools. Contact the council to get a bigger green bin or a new bin if you dont have one free of charge and a complimentary compost bin for your kitchen. #sustainableliving #refusereuserecycle #playgroundtoplate #coonanshillelc

18.01.2022 Happy NATIONAL RECYCLING WEEK Planet Ark started this week 24 years ago in 1996. It was started to bring a national focus to the environmental benefits of recycling. Never more important than now due to Climate Change, it continues to educate and stimulate behaviour change for people at home, work and school. To celebrate, we organised an Incursion for Playground to Plate this week. Thank you to Moreland City Council we invited Veida from Envirocom to share with the child...ren different ways to recycle their rubbish. It was a fun lesson and we learnt some cool names for our recyclable rubbish such a Gloria the Glass Jar! The children in Broad Beans ended the lesson by singing their Recycle song that they have learnt in class, what a great song and message they delivered. Happy Recycling and remember the 7 Rs to Zero Waste..... REFUSE REDUCE REUSE RECYCLE REPURPOSE REPLANT and ROT (Compost)

The children engaged in an experience where they were able to cut their own vegetables, building on important real life skills. Cooking with children helps them build on fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination and early concepts of math and science. ... What do you cook with your children at home?

15.01.2022 Playground to Plate will not continue lessons during the school holidays so we can plan for Term 2 and prepare and maintain the gardens around the centre. Located near the entrance to the centre, on the left side of the doors, we have placed our Street Library which contains a variety of books. A Street Library is essentially a mini collection of books where people are encouraged to take, share and give books that they no longer need. We invite you all to reach into our Street Library to share the joys of reading. You can take what may interest... you, then choose to return or exchange for another book. 04.01.2022 Mmmm the Sweet Potato Fritters were popular this week during our Playground to Plate lessons. I even had requests for the recipe from the children! Sweet Potatoes are full of Vitamin C and Magensium and are an Anti Inflammatory Root Vegetable. Funny enough they are not related to the humble potato and instead come from the Morning Glory Family ... If you want to grow your own, plant them using a tuber or seedling in November and they will be ready to Harvest in Winter next year. Happy Gardening #playgroundtoplate

01.01.2022 In keeping with their tradition of Friday cooking classes, the Kindergarten children in our Vines room made fresh homemade focaccia on Friday last week! Our Vines children have been expressing their desire to cook something to take home and share with their families, so they picked some fresh parsley, oregano and rosemary from our Playground to Plate Garden to add to their focaccia. The children had the opportunity to talk about measurements and they learnt about yeast and... its reaction to sugar and water. They were amazed to observe the change and watch it rise to the top of the cup. Once the dough was made, they left it to rest for half an hour. Wow! was all we could hear from the children - they were so excited when they saw that the dough had doubled in volume after resting. Our amazing chef Anna went on to help the children lay the focaccia dough onto different trays. The children had the opportunity to watch Anna and ask her questions, such as Why are you making it flat? & How long will it take to cook?. Once the focaccia was ready the children helped to cut it into squares and placed it on a tray for their families to taste. Well done Vines
