25.01.2022 Just a reminder. Tomorrow it is predicted to reach 40C. Please remember to keep your pets hydrated & inside the house to avoid heat stress. Over the summer months it is important to ensure there is adequate shade & shelter in your yard. It is also & good idea to put out extra water bowls & change them through the day as the water becomes hot. Heat stress can be very serious for our pets, so it is important that we do everything we can to keep them safe & comfortable.

24.01.2022 Allergic Dermatitis is a condition in which both dogs & cats itch, rub, chew, lick, bite, scoot or scratch themselves. It is very common & can be caused by atopic dermatitis, flea allergy dermatitis, a food allergy & contact dermatitis. Allergic dermatitis is often a misunderstood or an underdiagnosed condition. As the name implies, allergic dermatitis results from an allergy. However, most of the damage seen on the skin is often not associated with the original cause but with the damage your pet does to him or herself through biting, licking or scratching. It is very important that both the cause of the condition is diagnosed & the irritation is relieved. If you have an itchy pet, give us a call on 69424100. All month we will be offering $30 skin consults.

16.01.2022 With baby Bird season underway, it's important to be aware of the following information. DID YOU KNOW THAT PARENT BIRDS DO NOT TAKE WATER TO THEIR YOUNG IN T...HE NEST? Young / baby birds do not start drinking water until they have fully fledged & have left the nest with their parents. Prior to this they get hydration from the food provided by their parents. At the back of a Bird's tongue is the opening to their airway - it is very easy for water given directly to any Bird's mouth or beak to go down this entry hole to the airway accidentally & into the lungs, causing aspiration which can be fatal, especially in the case of baby birds who will often 'instinctively' open their mouth automatically to beg for food. This is a reflex reaction for many species of baby Birds, especially with nestling age chicks, regardless of if they are "truly" hungry at the time or not. Water going down the airway into the lungs does not necessarily kill instantly, but Birds can & do die hours or days later as a result - either from 'drowning' or due to developing pneumonia. Sadly this is not an uncommon occurrence when people misread a bird's behaviour, & well-meaningly but mistakenly try give it a drink of water. It is not unusual for juvenile & adult Birds to 'gape' with their mouth open wide as a defense response, to try & make themselves appear intimidating to would be / potential predators - which is what they perceive us as, even when we are trying to help them. This 'I'm tough & scary - back off' behaviour is often misinterpreted as being hot or thirsty (or hungry), resulting in water being tipped, dribbled, syringed or eye-droppered, etc directly into a Bird's mouth, again potentially causing aspiration. Also if a Bird (or animal) is a baby, or sick, injured or potentially suffering concussion from an impact, they may not be able to co-ordinate & swallow water coherently. If you found a sick, injured or orphaned human would the first thing you did be to try to make them drink or eat, especially without knowing what may be wrong with them internally not just what's visible externally - or would you keep them safe & comfortable as possible, & call asap for experienced help & advice? If you found a sick, injured or orphaned cat or dog (or other domestic animal), would the first thing you do be to try to make them drink or eat, again especially without knowing what may be wrong with them internally not just what's visible externally - or would you keep them safe & comfortable as possible, & call asap for experienced help & advice? The appropriate immediate & emergency response & care for found & rescued wildlife follows the same principals - & the 5 golden rules of : safe, warm, quiet, dark no food or water. For the animal's best interests & welfare, never give water or food to rescued birds (or any animal) unless discussed with a wildlife carer first, with regards to what may be suitable in the circumstances & for that particular individual/s & situation.. Incorrect food - & giving water, can be quite detrimental, & trying to feed sick, injured or orphaned birds (or any animals) may inadvertently do them more harm than good. Please share this vital information, & thank you for caring & helping our amazing native wildlife. Wildlife Rescue Fraser Coast

13.01.2022 FIREWORKS SCARE PETS There will be fireworks tonight around 9pm for the lions club Christmas carnival. Please ensure your pets are safe inside your house. Too many pets escape from yards, injure themselves and become lost everytime there is a fireworks display. Even if your pet doesn't normally come in to the house, please considering putting them in the bathroom or laundry. Somewhere they will be safe and secure.

11.01.2022 Fledgling Magpie Season If you see me on the ground, hold tight, my parents are likely to be somewhere around! They may be out collecting my food or cha...sing away predators that are likely to intrude. Please give them time, and wait and see, they're extremely likely to return to me. As my legs wobble, I clumsily plummet to the ground. I’m just learning my bearings of how to get around. An exciting new world for me to see. Out of the nest and free as can be! Although I may not yet be able to fly, please don’t worry as I’m bound to get by. I can usually flutter and jump to higher ground. I can also communicate with my parents by emitting a sound. If you see me in immediate danger, please help and don’t be a stranger! If I’m injured, I need your assistance. Call your local animal rescue shelter to help secure my existence! Please don’t be tempted to take me home, and try to raise me on your own. I require experienced care, and a nutritious diet like my parents would prepare! I know you mean well, and truly thank you for caring. But when it comes to raising me, even my own parents can find it overbearing! If I’m too young and unable to be returned to my nest, (refer to flowchart) here’s something you can try to ensure I progress... Constructing a makeshift nest is easy as can be. Octopus straps, a hanging basket, leaf litter, then securely hang it up in a tree! Make sure you wait until my mum or dad return. If you see a parent attending to me, then there is no reason for further concern. If you’re EVER in doubt, do not fuss. Ring your local wildlife shelter and they’ll be able to help us! Follow this flowchart and learn what to do if you find a baby magpie here https://www.facebook.com//pcb.243338437/2433382186755919/

10.01.2022 Did you know that dogs & cats can be allergic to fleas? Flea allergy dermatitis (FAD) is a leading cause of allergic reactions in both dogs & cats. In an allergic reaction, the body’s immune system overreacts to a substance (called an antigen) that is normally harmless. In the case of FAD it is the flea’s saliva that the cats & dogs are allergic to. The allergic reaction from one flea bite causes the pet to become intensely itchy & uncomfortable. This is why regular monthly flea prevention is so important, just because you can’t see the fleas doesn’t mean they're not the cause of your pets itching. If you are concerned that your pet may be suffering from this condition, call us on 69424100 to book a $30 skin consult, for the month of September only.

10.01.2022 DISCOUNTED MICROCHIPPING On Friday the 29th January 2021, we will be having a discounted microchipping day. The cost will be $20 per animal, bookings are essential. This offer will be valid for one day only, so please call us on 69424100 to make an appointment for you pets :)

09.01.2022 ‘Relocation’ doesn’t work for possums. Nine times out of ten, it kills them. They either die from predatory vulnerability - due to having no home to hide in; on... the roads - while meandering about lost; hunger/no shelter - having intruded on the already resident possums of an area who will chase them off with a vengeance to protect their own life-sources; and lastly, but definitely not least they die from the stress caused by all the trauma they have been put through. Possums die from stress. An easier, humane solution for so called ‘pest’ possums is to prevent them entering faulty roof/wall cavities (fix them) and provide them with alternative nest sites in the surrounding area: eg. nest boxes. And grow enough native plants to be shared by all We have to develop some tolerance, possums are not the usurpers- we are. ~Rheya Linden. (Possum Wars/Animal Advocate) Photograph M. Uzzell.
