22.01.2022 BRISBANE CITY COUNCIL PETITION UPDATE Dear Coorparoo Cricket Family, The club would like to thank everyone that supported us last year with our ‘Save Cricket at Coorparoo’ petition to the Brisbane City Council. The volume of support was incredible with over 2,000 people signing up. We have been told that this was one of Council’s all-time highest petitions. Well done!... As you may be aware, Brisbane City Council publicly responded to the petition today (Thursday 28 January 2021). Whilst we welcome the response, we note that our petition was submitted over six months ago (24 July 2020). Unfortunately, this is not unusual form for Council. Coorparoo Cricket Club are disappointed with Council’s response to our community’s outpouring of support. Our club lived and thrived at C.P. Bottomley Park for a quarter century. However, Council stated that it is not their policy to engage in discussions or mediation between disagreeing Council facility users. If this is not Council’s job, then who is it? Council justified Coorparoo Cricket Club’s eviction by saying that cricket will remain a fixture of C.P. Bottomley Park. To date we have not witnessed any cricket played at the site; only the destruction of the cricket block on Peter Burge Oval. We do note that Easts Rugby Union is hosting a junior Blaster cricket program starting this Friday night. Blasters cricket is a skills-based cricket program that does not use turf wickets, nor full sized cricket ovals. We also note the timing of the Council response and the commencement of the Blasters program. Coorparoo Cricket Club are disappointed with the position that Queensland Cricket has taken in with regards to our eviction. The lack of representation we received from our governing body was heartbreaking and their complete apathy towards losing two turf blocks in Inner Brisbane should raise red flags for other cricket clubs and associations. Council mentioned that Coorparoo Cricket Club were offered the use of the Balmoral High School oval (Balmoral Sports Complex). This field is a synthetic cricket wicket and as such, unsuitable for the kind of cricket we play. This further demonstrated the lack of understanding by Council of the value C.P. Bottomley Park’s turf blocks. This would be like an AFL club being offered a rectangular soccer field to play their games on. Council may well say that its not my job to get involved in sub-tenant disputes. But we are committed to continuing our fight and to remain a positive, active member of the Inner East sporting community. Stay tuned for updates. Marc Fidler President Coorparoo Cricket Club

02.01.2022 UPCOMING MILESTONES Rod Plucka Taylor plays his 300th Game On Saturday Coorparoo Cricket Club will welcome only its 3rd ever player into the 300 game Club.... Rod Taylor will run outwell amble out, for game 300. Plucka, as he is now affectionally known after a few lean seasons with the bat to start his career, has scored over 5000 runs for the club with a top score of 103. His century came in game 250 so hopefully another milestone game will bring another big score. He has taken 144 catches, 78 wickets (with a best of 7/40) and played in 5 premierships throughout an auspicious career. Plucka was the first bloke I spoke to at this club it was his number on the add in the South East Advertiser and it was about this time of the year 22 years ago that I made a call and started playing for this cricket club. Since that first interaction with the Legend that he has become we have become great mates (even though he is a Richmond supporter) and have shared some wonderful cricketing experiences together. Plucka was Captain of his C grade team when they won their Premiership in 99/00, the same year I won my first in B grade. Since then there have played in Premiership teams together with 2015/16 probably the highlight, milestones together (Pluck made his first century in his 250th game and I took my 500th in the same game) a bit of heartache along the way but overall a bloody wonderful 20 odd seasons of cricket. This man’s contribution hasn’t only been on the field, a Club Life Member for all he has given us, his contribution (and commitment) to recording our history is exactly why we are able to celebrate his 300th this week. When Pluck suggested going through all the scorebooks and putting all the games into My Cricket we thought he was mad but he did it and that’s why we know that this is game 300.and that he has taken 78 wickets and 144 catches etc. Pluck is a very humble character who doesn’t really appreciate the limelight but for everything he has done to get to Game 300 he must be congratulated and further recognised for his massive contribution to our club. Get around him this weekend it pains me that I will not get to play this game with him but I hope he is celebrated for his achievement. Thanks Pluck, enjoy 300 and may there be many more. Fids.
